Gardening for Wildlife - Biological Warfare for at Home and in the Gardens

It’s that time of year for the biting flies, skeeters and other insects. I discovered last year that a mixture of rubbing alcohol and pure mint oil keeps these pests at bay. I mixed 2 ounces of pure mint (from a health food store) with 14 ounces of rubbing alcohol. I was using this to spray for wasps, but discovered when I rubbed it on me, that all other biting insects stayed away too. It works well for me. I smell good and no harsh chemicals found in other sprays. The alcohol evaporates to nothing and the mint stays. Increase the formula to 25% mint and this kills off wasps in the (Read more)

Effective Teen Parenting Is Challenging

We all know that the teen years can be viewed as a journey from childhood to adulthood, but consider that teen parenting can be seen as a similar journey. All of these things make teen parenting a challenge, since teens can go from one extreme to the other in the blink of an eye. One more teen stress that needs to be considered is the inevitable want to fit in, to be accepted by their (Read more)

Open Your Parachute

SAW A SIGN AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET TODAY, near my home in Honolulu . It said, “Parachute for Rent: Used once, never opened, one stain.” Somehow that struck me as the way we often live our lives. The ‘never opened’ part, I mean. WE HAVE SUCH INCREDIBLE GIFTS of talents, ideas, inspiration, goodness, and yet how much of it do we ever use? Like the parachute, our gifts are rarely opened. They’re rarely out there for the world to see these gifts or for us to enjoy. The parachute, the sign said, had a stain. And so it is with us as humans. The stain of our (Read more)
