A Gift And A Bribe - The Difference In Biblical Terms

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Many Westerners who come over to oriental societies have to immediate grapple with one reality - the strong culture and presence of gifts-giving and even bribery that takes place in our societies. It can range from the blatant (Indonesia or Vietnam) to the indirect (China or Philippines) to the “legalised and regulated” (Singapore!).

I remembered my first encounter with gifts as a teacher - I got a very expensive book from a parent. It was very, very difficult for me to return that gift without offending the parent so I approached my principal for advice. Public servants in Singapore (of whom teachers are a part of) have very strict instructions regarding gifts (declare value, report to superiors, etc), to avoid any problems or even appearance of bribery. I decided to make that book publicly available to all my colleagues.

Over at the Shanghai Singapore International School, I encountered Korean parents - and I realised that Korean parents took their gift-giving very seriously. It’s something like a mark of respect or even “face” to them to present a gift of nominal value (chocolates, for example) to a teacher they respect. But since I’m no longer a public servant, I could accept them without any problem.

There was one gift I had to return though, and that really destroyed my relationship with the parent (sigh). It was a very beautiful idol of some Indonesian tribe or something, which we suspect to be a totem of some sort. I don’t think it’s very appropriate for a Christian family to have this in the house so I wrote a card explaining my position and returned the gift. That parent never spoke to me again.

I know that God has very serious instructions regarding bribery.

“And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the discerning and perverts the words of the righteous.” Exodus 23:8

“You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.” Deuteronomy 16:19

“A wicked man accepts a bribe behind the back, To pervert the ways of justice.” Proverbs 17:23

In other words, bribes are given to blind the eyes and to pervert justice. When money is given for the judge to award you his judgement, that’s a bribe. When money is given for a person to award you the contract, even if other parties obviously gives the better deal, that’s a bribe.

How about gifts? What does the Bible say about gifts (remember that the Hebrew society is an oriental one)?

“Many entreat the favor of the nobility, And every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.” Proverbs 19:6

“A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” Proverbs 18:16

I think it is very clear here - a gift is an introduction, a means to put ourselves in good standing before a person in an oriental society (I suspect it works in western societies as well!). Herein lies the great power of the oft-acclaimed Chinese guanxi 关系, which literally means “connections” or “relations”. You can get guanxi by being a childhood friend or relative, or by being friends later in life (mostly through gifts - monetary, in kind or by being the leverage for your own personal guanxi elsewhere).

What gifts have I given so far that has given me some of this guanxi? I’ve a friend who has connections with government officials - she likes me, and I’ve been a great help to her in establishing herself in Singapore. I’ve leveraged upon my network to create opportunities for the school to perform in public venues - both sides are happy in the process.

I learnt one thing though - that ultimately, we need to be discerning over what constitutes a bribe and what constitutes a gift (I suspect many of my definitions of “gifts” are considered bribes by most governments of today). I believe that as long as we are sure we are not perverting justice or blinding the eyes of the decision-maker, any gifts we give to make room for us in high places would be regarded by God as wisdom. And what is the value God has placed upon wisdom?

My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; Proverbs 2:1-6

Home Business Scams

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

I am not a business major by any means, but I have taken an interest in business, particularly home businesses, since I was in middle school. Even though I have had an interest in business for quite some time, I chose not to continue my college studies within the realm of business as a business major, but rather within science. I currently attend Kansas State University and I am an animal science major. Yet, even with giving my preference to science, I still continue my research of entrepreneurship, businesses, and home based businesses.

Everyday, I see ads over the internet offering ways to make thousands of dollars, but they turn out to be scams. On average, I would say that for every legitimate work from home or home business opportunity there are fifty or more scams. The population of those wanting to work from home seems to be growing everyday and the population for scams, particularly internet scams, seems to be growing just as fast if not faster. Luckily for me, I was able to find a good business that fits within my busy college lifestyle.

I really believe that research is of utmost importance and should be conducted before any type of investment into a business or any other work from home opportunity is made. Often times we become lazy and do not take the time to do any research. It is this same laziness that attracts us to false business opportunities or work from home scams that promise an outrageous income without you having to do any work whatsoever.

At one point I probably would be considered as one to be placed on the “most likely to be scammed” list, but now I have forced myself to become a little more skeptical of new opportunities. I make sure I do my research before I decide whether or not to become involved with anything.

Flower Sour - Cupid, Chemicals, And Corporate Social Responsibility

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

A few days ago I had one of those “random” conversations that sets the brain blazing down a hundred different paths almost immediately. The topic was DDT, and how that chemical was bought and sold with impunity in Latin America years after it had been banned in the United States for causing serious health and environmental problems.

In the beginning it was the wonder chemical of yore. From getting rid of vermin, to use as an agricultural pesticide, to eliminating malaria, the new potion apparently knew no bounds. Soon however, nasty little pieces of evidence – cancer, birth defects, and environmental hazards – started to spring up against the wonder chemical. Consequently, during the 1970s and 1980s, agricultural use of DDT was banned in the US and most developed countries.

However, it would seem this urgent health and environmental update somehow bypassed Latin America and some other parts of the world. In countries like Ecuador and Colombia, DDT and similar derivatives remain in active use especially for agricultural purposes. All this despite the 2001 Stockholm Convention calling for the elimination of such “persistent organic pollutants” in agribusiness.

DDT and other such persistent pollutants are just that – persistent. In human and other animal life, they cluster in fatty areas and proceed, nonstop, to erode the system from within. And this is just the proverbial tip.

Marketing and selling chemicals in developing countries, where public awareness of negative effects may be lower, is irresponsible, to say the least. And obviously certain businesses thrive by courting governments that are either more susceptible to manipulation or prone to allowing the unchecked commercialization of such hazardous products.

The ongoing side effects from the continued use of such chemicals in Colombian and Ecuadorian floral workers – headaches, nausea, impaired vision, asthma, stillbirths, congenital malformations, miscarriages – are graphic and constant reminders of the blatant sociopolitical and economic double standards at play in our current global dynamic.

Sneaky history. It’s almost impressive the way it keeps recycling itself. Well, at least we can’t call it unsustainable.

Columbia is the second largest flower producer in the world. Two-thirds of all fresh cut flowers sold in the United States come from Columbia. Dole, the leading producer of fresh fruit and vegetables, is also one of the largest flower producers in Latin America.

Dole’s official CSR report reads like a dream. That is, until you consider the fact that Columbian and Ecuadorian floral workers, many of them women, are exposed daily, to some of the most toxic chemicals available. Or unavailable – about a fifth of these chemicals used in the greenhouses are either banned, or not registered for use in the US or Canada for various health reasons. Dole has agreed to participate in an environmental standards program, but the question is whether the affected governments have any real monitoring systems in place.

The promotion of agribusiness should not come at the cost of human health, environment, or wildlife survival. This should be the business bottom line. However, looking at the plight of flower workers in Columbia and Ecuador, this common sense goal starts to look more like a foolish dream.

Is a rose just a rose anymore? I would argue with the bard. It would seem that its thorns are more the norm in certain parts of our world.

The Basics Of E-mails

Friday, June 15th, 2007

It’s a great tool to be in touch and to widen your business. However be wary of the fine line between spamming and being persistent when sending mails.

Spamming is frowned upon in most countries. If it is found by your e-mail account provider that you are guilty of this sacrilege, your account could be suspended and your outgoing e-mails could be blocked out by the the recipient’s mail server, making your efforts futile.

Tip
No matter how rude someone may be to you, or how offended may be by another’s opinion, don’t lower yourself to their level by stooping to obsceneties, threats or claims of self-importance. Always state your opinion clearly and concisely, without personalising an issue or resorting to name-calling.

A good definition of spamming would be-the use of any electronic communication medium to send unsolicited messages in bulk. But the term ’spam’ means any commercially-oriented, unsolicited bulk mailing that is excessive in nature, and more importantly, undesired.

To the popular perception, the most common form of spam is the one delivered in e-mail as a form of commercial advertising. Nevertheless, things comparable to spamming for non-commercial purposes in media other than e-mail have also been recorded.

The spammers have developed have developed a variety of spamming techniques over the years. This can happen in each of the medias: e-mail spam, IM spam, Usenet newsgroup scam, Web search engine spam, weblogs spam, and mobile phone messaging spam.

It is imperative that you desist from all the above forms, and understand what could be termed as spamming before you decide to send out a mass mailer announcing to the world about your business-or even your landing on the WWW.

There is no entry barrier as far as spamming is concerned, but the volume of unsolicited e-mail produce other costs which are actually borne by the public in terms of lost productivity and fraud. And it is a burden for Internet service providers, which must add extra capacity to cope with the deluge.

Spamming is generally dealt with strictly by the internet authorities, and has been the subject of legislation in a number of jurisdictions, including the United States’ CAN-SPAM Act of 2003.

Fact
The term Spamming derives its name from the Monty Python Spam sketch about SPAM brand processed meat, is economically viable because advertisers have effectively no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing list.

The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility in Modern Business Development

Friday, May 18th, 2007

There are many factors within general business practices that are altering to ensure that every person benefits from the continued functioning of the company. Previously many businesses have subscribed to practices that may have had negative effects on their stakeholders. This is now changing as the realisation sets in of the true importance of the different stakeholders in any particular business. There are many different manners in which a company can implement corporate social responsibility measures for the benefit of all concerned. The manner in which each different company implements the changes will be dependant on what aspects of the company could be considered as having produced negative effects.

Corporate Social responsibility can often be confused with corporate charity, but it is a very different thing. Corporate charity can involve the donation of money and the provision of opportunities to members of the community and stakeholders. This is very different to the considerations that a company must abide by to ensure that their actions fall with the acceptable corporate social responsibility guidelines that have been established. These can include guidelines that relate to the environmental impact that a particular action can have or they can relate to the impact that an action can have on the local community. The guidelines are intended to ensure that any negative effects that an action could possibly have are eliminated or reduced as far as possible.

The concept of corporate social responsibility is intended to provide each business with a far greater ability to create sustainable development. This can help to provide ongoing benefits for the business and its stakeholders, regardless of the size of the business. The business can become more competitive once it begins to create and follow guidelines to enforce the concept of corporate social responsibility within the company and its surrounding community. The greater the sustainability of a business’s developments, the more successful it can become. The attraction of corporate social responsibility for many businesses is that it can help to increase sustainability without creating negative effects.

The type of business that implements changes to come in line with accepted corporate social responsibility guidelines will also determine what sort of changes will need to be made. The size of the investment that will be required to ensure that the business conforms to acceptable guidelines will also be affected by the type of business it is. The resources that are expended for this purpose do need to be viewed as an investment rather than an unnecessary expense since the positive results can more than repay the investment.

The term corporate social responsibility may seem to be one of the current buzz words in business, but the concept is one that has been formulated by many people over many years. The concept is one that is seen as being important for the continued well-being of the vast majority of companies and essential for the community that surrounds them. The importance that is placed on business actions conforming to acceptable corporate social responsibility standards can ensure that these guidelines are treated with the respect that they merit.

Values The Rudder For Successful Leadership Navigation In Making Good Choices And Tough Decisions

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Any day we can pick up the paper, listen to the radio or see someone on television and learn about people whose core values have brought their behaviors to local, state or national attention. From the corrupt officials in Corporate America to the equally corrupted politicians, citizens from school age children to adults can see the affect of poor leadership when positive values or ethics are not present.

Values are the rudder for successfully navigating the challenges or rocks that we face as leaders when sailing through the various business seas. These non-negotiable rules of conduct keep us on course, our direction steady and focused even when the waves become turbulent and may appear to momentarily capsize our vessel.

As people navigate the issues of making good choices and tough decisions, what is so interesting is that very few identify the lack of value or ethics as the real problem especially those in leadership roles. Excuses are made from “It was over 20 years ago” to “that depends upon how you define is.” For if we acknowledge that values are the real issue, we are being judgmental and in America, making judgements are viewed as breaking some unwritten commandment.

When values are present, so are judgements along with personal responsibility and accountability. Without clear and articulated positive core values, we attempt to navigate the easy way around the storm and compromise our own personal integrity.

What I know as an executive coach is that companies who do not proudly display their company’s values statement both on their walls and through the daily behaviors of all shareholders are the first companies to lose loyal customers and market share. Also these same companies, in many cases, are the first ones to complain about having bad business results.

The founding fathers of the United States understood the importance of having a strong rudder or values when crafting the Declaration of Independence in their efforts to navigate the successful creation of a young country. If your business has not invested the time to construct a company’s values statement, now is the time to take such action. If you have a core values statement, take the time to review it as well as your overall strategic plan. Of course, if you want to answer to the rocks, the choice is yours.

Why Do Intelligent Internet Entrepreneurs Get Involved in Such Sleazy Stuff?

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Have you ever met a fairly smart person and then watch their activities in business and just wanted to puke? It certainly gives entrepreneurship a bad name. Indeed, it makes me sick to my stomach. Why do they stoop so low? Well it appears that they do it because it works and that there is a sucker born every minute and rather than having a little integrity and ethics they simply get down to the lowest common denominator and take people’s money.

But why do they do it; that is to say; Why Do Intelligent Internet Entrepreneurs Get Involved in Such Sleazy Stuff? I know for a fact that they do not have too, they are smart enough to figure out a better way and yet will not? It is such a shame to see bright people do this and it makes all business people look bad. It puts a tarnished image on the business community and makes an already skeptical public even more weary. And some of the hype marketing out there is utterly ridiculous.

My theory is that folks are just lazy, both rich and poor, smart or foolish; humans are just trying to get by with minimal effort. It is amazing anyone would want to have a human as an associate or friend. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

When You Work For a Man

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Years ago, most offices had a saying stuck somewhere on the walls. It might have been near the copier, near the coffeepot, or near the water cooler – where supposedly everyone gathered. (Funny, I never saw people gathered around any water coolers where I worked.)

These words were a motivational saying that showed up when the copy repairman arrived. When he repaired the copiers the man needed something with words and graphics on it to test the copier, and he brought his own pages with him. He gave a copy of the week’s or month’s motivational quote to the receptionist or secretary before he left, and she usually made a few copies – one for the boss, who ultimately posted it in some prominent place, and one to each of her closest co-workers. In every office where I worked– in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Texas – there were copies of this saying. It began, “If you work for a man, work for him…”

Long ago, my last withered, crinkled and yellowed copy of those words disappeared from my personal files. The gist of the message, of course, was just how it began. If you work for a man, work for him. Give him – or your job – the attention it deserves, since he – or the company – is paying you to work.

In an Internet search, I found two quotations similar to the ones that adorned the offices and break rooms of the past.

If you work for someone, then work for him: Speak well of him and stand by the institution he represents. Remember, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness. If you must growl, condemn, and eternally find fault, resign your position and when you are on the outside, complain to your hearts content. But as long as you are a part of the institution do not condemn it.

~ Elbert Hubbard

When you work for a man, work for him. Give him your dedication, honesty, sincerity and 100% of your skills. If you must damn him, do so from without; quit and then damn him to high heaven if that is your wish. But while you are in his employ, do nothing or say nothing negative about him, or to him.

~ James Ellis Dolan

The second version sounds more like the one we had in offices throughout the land.

Today, we need this quotation or something similar posted on offices, in retail stores and in fast food restaurants. We need words like these everywhere today, at least in the United States. Customer service and company loyalty are really lacking.

It might be a good idea if we made words such as these a part of our educational system and shared them during new employee orientation and training. I wonder, though, if it would make a difference. These words may not be specific enough for today’s employees. We might have to explain what is and is not proper behavior for an employee.

When you work for a man, work for him. Give him your best. Do not spend time checking personal emails, creating listings for single’s personal web sites, or doing your Internet shopping at work. The workday belongs to the man or the company that pays you, and you are paid to perform a job, not to do your personal business. Company phones, copiers, fax machines and computers are there for company business. If you must speak on the phone, please try to do so on your lunch time or coffee break.

~ Marilyn Mackenzie

I wonder if having words like these posted in a prominent place would really make a difference. When customer service or loyalty issues are raised in the work place, employees shake their heads up and down in agreement. They agree that Joe and Charlie and Susan really should do better. But they don’t seem to understand that the admonishment is meant for all employees.

On their days or evenings off, they get quite perturbed at the receptionist at the beauty salon because she speaks on the phone with her boyfriend, paying no attention to customers. They get angry with the convenience store clerk for using the phone for personal calls. They hate it when the grocery cashier and bagger are in a discussion and ignoring the needs of customers.

Then as return to their own jobs, they let the phone ring and ring, letting calls transfer to their voice mail. They spend the first thirty minutes of the day checking their own personal emails. When their children arrive home from school, instead of just taking a quick check-in call, they spend thirty minutes talking.

At any given time of the day, employees may be in the midst of important personal calls – with collection agencies, possible future employers, or with their children. But that is different. It’s the other employees who have the problem not working as much or as quickly or as long as they should.

What ever happened to those dreaded efficiency experts? Remember them? If they were to visit today’s offices, retail locations, restaurants and other businesses, would they find efficiency? Or would they find that the average employee today only works about five hours of the scheduled eight-hour shift. I think we all know the answer. Today’s employee has forgotten that when he works for a man, he should work for him.

Ramadan To Be Hanged: Good Work Boys!

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Ramadan to be hanged: Good work boys!

I’m not sure why, how and when the UN came up with a policy to not kill, killers, or to save killers, or to preserve them for posterity in prison cells, but it is a bad policy. And so thinks the Iraqi government, or legal process:“Iraq’s High Tribunal has sentenced Saddam Hussein’s former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan to be hanged. He was tried alongside the former Iraqi leader over the killing of 148 Shias in the village of Dujail in the 1980s.” Now anyone in their right mind knows this high ranking devil of Iraq had his hands bloodier than simply killing only 148 Shias, which is a lot in itself, perhaps he should take credit for the mass murders across Iraq during his whole term in office. In any case, I think the UN, as I have often said, is the devils playground for world disorder.

America seems to need it for a platform to speak I guess, but at such a price. The Iraq judge paid little attention, as has Israel, and the US and Russia, and China to the UN, when it comes to self interests, and perhaps with good reason, it is the devils backyard, as I repeat myself. So good for the judging and sentencing and the good men of Iraq, who do not want to pay taxes to feed fat killers like Ramadan. Good work boys. You saved the nation a headache. Plus I’m sure if you would have let him live he would have boasted between his cell mates, how brave he was in killing this person and that person, and so forth and so on (or having them killed). He was indeed, a deadly cockroach.

Now if only we could get the rest of the world behind this policy we’d get rid of a lot of trash, save money, and give a good message to the world’s future legal assassins.

Nine Commitments That Emphasize Business Ethics & Company Core Values Are Extremely Crucial

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

In the last few years, business ethics and company core values are among the most critical discussions I facilitate during strategic planning and business coaching endeavors. This is partly due to he tremendous negative reaction to corporate ethics scandals. My encouragement to clients is to go “public” with their core values and ethical standards so it becomes known what the company stands for and how the leaders will conduct business.

Many businesses also will use the core values and ethical standards for guidance in making critical decisions, to create an ethical corporate culture, to attract high quality employees and to differentiate themselves from competitors. I applaud those businesses that establish and declare their core values and ethical standards in some written form and/or posting them on their web site and other company materials.

So, you may ask how would a business go about establishing and emphasizing a set of core values and ethical standards? Based upon my personal and professional experiences and research, I would recommend making the following nine commitments:

Commitment #1: Verify a strong commitment from company management to establish core values for the business.

Commitment #2: Develop a forum to gather information from employees and company stakeholders.

Commitment #3: Use an experienced professional outside facilitator to conduct the developed forum and facilitate the discussion to gather input.

Commitment #4: Obtain and verify management and employee commitment to the selected company core values and their consideration in everyday decision making.

Commitment #5: Establish a set of ethical standards as an integral part of the company core values and make them “public.”

Commitment #6: Keep the ethical standards and company core values current. Amend them as warranted to reflect reality.

Commitment #7: Monitor the company’s commitment and performance regarding its ethical standards and core values. Survey employees and stakeholders to find out how they feel about the company living up to its own standards and values.

Commitment #8: Develop a process and/or procedure to deal with violations of ethical standards and company core values.

Commitment #9: Recognize and reward ethical behavior.

If you would like to discuss the value of business core values and ethics and learn more about fostering that type of ethical environment within your organization, please contact Glenn Ebersole today through his website at http://www.businesscoach4u.com or by email at jgecoach@aol.com
