Placenta Previa

Friday, October 12th, 2007

You are most likely reading this article thinking what is Placenta Previa? Well for those of you that have had placenta previa you know that it can be very scary. Let me share with you my story.

Placenta Previa is a condition in pregnancy, when your placenta or part of your placenta is covering your cervix. Your placenta attaches to your uterine wall, and this is what your baby uses to grow while inside of you. All your babies blood and nutrients flow through your placenta. Your placenta is attached to your babies unbilical cord. Your cervix is where your baby comes out. You have a cervix plug that is like a mucus plug that keeps everything inside of you until your water breaks and then it thins out when you go into labor.

I was diagnosed with full blown placenta previa when I was 6 months pregnant. If your placenta is on your cervix then you can’t give birth to your baby because the placenta will come out first, if any of you know anything about giving birth there are 2 stages of labor, your baby and your placenta. Your baby must have full usage of your placenta when giving birth because this is your babies blood and oxygen supply. So I was scheduled for a Cesarean section.

Well everything was going just fine until I was 6 months pregnant and then I just started bleeding out of the blue. At the time I was a hairstylist and I was cutting someones hair. I asked my Co workers to call 911 and the ambulance came and took me to the hospital.

At the hospital I was rushed to the ER, and they gave me something to stop my contractions by now I was in labor and I was 26 weeks pregnant. The thought they were going to have to deliver my baby right then but my contractions stopped and I was sent home a week later, on strict bed rest. I was on bed rest for about 2 months and then I had a cesarean section. My baby was a month premature and had some complications when he was born. They cut through my placenta, and my baby lost 1/3 of his blood he also had fluid in his lungs. He had a blood transfusion and was on oxygen for 24 hours and after that he was fine.

Most Placenta Previa cases are not this severe so if you have it don’t worry most times the placenta moves away from the cervix as your baby grows but sometimes it moves the other way and you have full blown placenta previa.

Doctors aren’t sure what causes placenta previa so there is really nothing you can do to prevent this. Some links have been shown in placenta previa and smoking. So don’t smoke or drink and eat healthy and take your vitamins. I did all these things and I still got it, so you can’t prevent bad things from happening, but you can try to prevent them, by eating right and taking good care of yourselves.

What To Take To The Hospital

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

When you are a first time mother, you don’t know what to expect period. People tell you all about their personal experiences and this just tends to be more nerve wracking for you the expectant mother. You hear that you need to pack a bag and get it ready for the hospital, because you will be in such a rush to get there. But what do you take with you to the hospital? Well here are some helpful tips so you have everything ready to go when your water breaks.

First of all, you shouldn’t wait until your water breaks to pack your bags. Have your bag packed and waiting by the door you leave out of, at least a week before your due date.

Make sure that when its time to go to the hospital, you or your husband has a watch with a second hand. This way you can time your contractions, this will be very helpful for when you get to the hospital.

Make sure you have a cell phone, and on your way to the hospital make the necessary calls to family and relatives that you want to be at the hospital. Grandparents, sisters, and brothers, mothers in laws etc. Let your husband concentrate on driving and if your not in to much pain then you should try to make the calls.

For your laboring room when you are in labor, you should bring warm socks, hospital rooms are usually cold, a couple of washcloths for sweating and if you would like your own birthing gown, which can be a nightgown or whatever you want it to be. The hospital usually supplies these things for you so if you are a light packer you can leave these things at home.

For your hospital room you are going to need a robe, and some nightgowns, again the hospital will provide these if you don’t want to take these. Slippers and some sweatpants and a sweatshirt, your makeup and everything you are going to need to get ready, hairdryer curling iron etc. You most likely won’t look so hot after you have your baby, and since you will have visitors it’s a good idea to bring thes thing. Also if you have a preference on sanitary napkins bring these or else the hospital will have these as well.

For going home you are going to need, an outfit, a nursing bra, if planning to breast feed, or just a bra. Underwear, shoes you get the point. A jacket if it’s cold outside. Last but not least a couple bags to bring home flowers and presents

For the babies ride home you are going to need a car seat, an outfit including an undershirt and socks or booties, a couple of heavy baby blankets, one to swaddle baby in and if it’s cold outside another one to cover babies head.

Circumcision and Your Baby Boy

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

So you just found out that you are having a baby boy, Congratulations! So now comes the decision to have your baby circumcised, or to not. In today’s society it is more likely then not to have a circumcision, but some parents choose not to do this. Here are some reasons why your child should get circumcised.

Well first if you are Jewish then it is required by your religion that you circumcise your baby boy. This is the oldest practiced medical procedure, dating back to biblical times. Circumcision was used to show peoples covenant to God. Well now a days most everybody circumcises there babies not for religious purposes but because well it is a lot cleaner then being uncircumcised.

Circumcision reduces the risk of infections, or other problems such as circumcision later on in life.

For appearance purposes, parents want there son to look like other peoples kids, they don’t want there child to be different.

Easier to keep clean, being uncircumcised can actually be harder to keep clean causing once again infection.

You can have your doctor circumcise your baby in the hospital or wait until baby is home from the hospital and have an ritual circumciser come to your house and do the procedure there.

Here are some reasons why parents choose not to circumcise there baby:

Parents are concerned about the pain, there is most likely some pain that goes along with circumcision but doctors can give baby something for the pain.

There is less risk of diaper rash on the penis because the foreskin protects from this

Some parents fear infection, but don’t realize they might fear that and have to deal with that without circumcision.

Some parents want there child to decide this when they are old enough to make this decision on there own.

Whatever you choose it is your choice, and one you can make when in the hospital or before your baby is born. I guess some people have to make a decision some people just know right away.

Good Luck making your decision.

Becoming A Mother

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Let’s face it, babies don’t come out of the birth canal with an instruction manual. But if they did life would be so much easier. You would know why your baby is screaming at 3 in the morning, instead of desperately wondering what you are doing wrong. If you are a first time mother it is natural to be more than nervous about becoming a mom. When you found out you were pregnant you were most likely so excited, and now that you are almost due you are still excited but also scared. I’m here to tell you that’s natural, all first time moms feel that way.

I didn’t even hold a baby until I held my own. I also didn’t ever change a diaper until I had my son, so the thought of being this responsible adult and having a baby depend on me, Freaked me out. Not to mention I am a single mom, so I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. But you can become at least a little prepared. So here are a few tips to help you prepare for motherhood.

Read some books about infants and children, but don’t only go by the book. Some babies never do anything by the book. But studying and having some background can definitely help out when becoming a mother.

Listen to your mother or your family, or someone close to you. While some advice they give you, might not be the best advice possible. Your parents or your elders know a little something about babies. You may not agree on some things they tell you for instance putting some whiskey on your child’s teething gums. Today that’s called child abuse! But it is a great opportunity to learn the good things your mother knows, or your family or whoever is close to you. Also ask other parents and then you will have some idea about how to be a mother, after all they are parents.

When interviewing a pediatrician for your baby, which you should have done before your baby is born. Write down some questions to ask the pediatrician about your baby. They won’t mind telling you in fact, most doctors would be glad to. There is also a nurses line or call the hospital where your baby is going to be born and ask questions.

Take a parenting class, some hospitals or doctors offices offer them locally. So does some local YMCA’s or health clubs. They will teach you how to change a diaper, CPR, how to swaddle your baby, and all the basics you need to know to take care of a baby. This can be very helpful especially if you don’t have much experience around infants.

Spend some time if possible with babies, if you have friends or there are babies at church. Ask the parents if you can hold them or change a diaper. Most parents will be grateful for the break and you will be getting baby experience.

Remember mothers are not born they are made. We all get better at something the more experience we have at it. We are going to make mistakes, we are only human. But your baby will hardly notice a small mistake, (they may notice a big thing like dropping them, so don’t do that.) but your baby will love you even though you made a mistake. If you care about your baby and give your child everything he/she needs, then you will be a great mom.

Good Luck with motherhood. I hope you find out as I did that I would rather be a mom to my son then do anything else in the world. Having a son is so fulfilling. It is the greatest gift God could bless us with.

What to Pack For a Stress-Free Birth

Monday, September 17th, 2007

There are many lists out there that discuss what to pack for childbirth. Listed below is a detailed list and the reasons why you need to bring such items. The main focus is that the mom in labor is as comfortable as possible. Having these tools in your labor bag will make the mom feel nurtured and taken care of at a seconds notice. Don’t have the baby without these essential items.

LIP BALM—Breathing dries out your lips. Nothing is more annoying than dry, chapped lips.

SLIPPERS—You don’t want to slip on the floors. Doesn’t look or feel nice.

ROBE AND PAJAMAS—If you don’t want to wear your own pajamas, the hospital will provide their own institutional version.

ALTOIDS—Other brands may not be as effective for nausea and fresh breath.

PACKS OF HONEY—To relieve the shakes during the latter stages of labor (get this at a fast food restaurant or at the hospital cafeteria) You will be glad you have this if the mom does indeed get the shakes.

STOP WATCH—For timing contractions. Not entirely necessary but sometimes the partners need to have something technical play with.

CAMERA—You will not want to miss any of the action. No one has to see these pictures, but you will be glad you have them. Taking pictures of the delivery can be done discretely if done on the side of the mother.

FILM—Get some extra memory for your digital

EXTRA BATTERIES OR A CHARGER for the camera—Mom does not want to relive the labor experience for this special photo opportunity.

MASSAGE OIL—Giving mom a full body massage will help the labor go faster as well as less labor discomfort.

CD PLAYER—With batteries, this is usual hospital policy.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSIC —Mom’s choice. Hard rock may not be the most ideal music to listen to during labor.

LAVENDER SCENTS —A drop of oil or lotion will do. Too much of this scent will make matters worse.

PLASTIC OR WOODEN MASSAGERS—A wooden rolling pin works wonders—not to be confused with hitting the birth partner during transition.

CLOTHES FOR WHEN GOING HOME—Sorry Mom, but you need to bring clothes that you wore when you were 5-6 months pregnant! Occasionally, we see a mother who slips into her pre pregnancy jeans right after delivery. Keep that information to yourself if you are one of those. The rest of us aren’t that lucky or happy for you.

GOING HOME OUTFIT FOR THE BABY—Something that you will want to save as a keepsake.

TOOTHBRUSH AND TOOTHPASTE—Self explanatory; It is amazing to witness women get more “pep” after brushing their teeth during labor.

HAIR BRUSH—Brushing a moms hair during labor will keep her relaxed.

MAKE-UP—Some women like to look beautiful during labor and delivery…what ever works.

A CHILLED GEL MASK FOR PUFFY EYES—Labor usually gives you a tension headache.

SCALP MASSAGER—Heaven

RUBBER BAND—To pull back long hair

EYE GLASSES INSTEAD OF CONTACTS—If you are sight challenged, it is not advisable to have your contacts in during labor.

PRE-SWEETENED KOOL-AID—To freshen the bland ice chips in case Mom is not allowed to eat or drink.

CLEAR LIQUIDS—Popsicles, broth, jello, etc. are all foods that are acceptable in labor.

AN INFLATED BIRTH BALL—Helps to widen the pelvis, lessen the pain and speeds along the labor.

ICE PACK—For your lower back or inner or outer thighs.

HEAT PACK—For achy back, shoulders and lower abdomen.

SMALL ELECTRIC FAN—Labor is hard work, and causes mom to perspire.

COPY OF YOUR BIRTH PLAN—With treats attached

Pregnancy - Expectations And Management

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

A lot has been written about what to expect during pregnant and how to manage all the changes that take place. Even though there is nothing that you can read or hear that will prepare you for pregnancy completely, knowledge of the kind of things that you can expect, help you in better management of the nine plus months that you need to wait before you can see your little angel.

Starting with a missed menstrual cycle, pregnancy brings with itself a myriad of physical and emotional changes that extremely pronounced and need proper management to ensure that you enjoy the period rather than whine and sulk it out.

The first trimester will bring increased levels of progesterone and a weakened digestive system. There is also morning sickness, flatulence, constipation, and heartburn to struggle and fight with. The best way to manage constipation and flatulence and digestive related issues is to eat frequent but smaller meals and try to consume food that if fibrous. Adequate quantities of water, fruits and whole grain are good sources of fiber. A small walk after a meal can go a long way in relieving a constipated system. Try squatting while using the bathroom since it is the most natural elimination posture for the human body.

During the second trimester the morning sickness is likely to subside to a large extent. But other signs of pregnancy like an increase in waistline, a change of shape of the belly, nasal congestion, an increased appetite, and varicose veins may surface. Women who have been constipated during the first trimester may at times develop hemorrhoids. You may also feel a bit disoriented and unable to concentrate. In about the fifth month, higher levels of fatigue and general aches and pains are likely to start. Sexual relations become a cause of concern due to the extended abdomen and you will need to explore a comfortable position that can accommodate your extended abdomen.

You may have to shop for large size clothing as you see that your clothes are getting tighter. To get some extra help with shopping, stitching and pregnancy ideas share the news with your friends and relatives and let them pitch in.

By the end of the second trimester, you will be able to feel the movements of the baby. This is probably the first sign of an actual life inside you. Other things that you will notice are stretching of ligaments that support the uterus causing pain in the lower abdomen, swelling of hands and feet, itching and skin pigmentation. Worry and nervousness are likely to be at its epitome with thoughts about labor and childbirth that almost seem to haunt.

The last semester is a time of more frequent visits to the doctor and major decisions need to be taken. Some women develop aches and pains in the rib cage due to the movements of their babies. Changing positions usually eases the discomfort.

One aspect that peeves most expectant mothers is the fact that the D-day seems to be around the corner but the time just does not seem to pass. Excited and nervousness about the new arrival conjure happy and at times upsetting thoughts. The best way to avoid these thoughts is to stay busy. This is a good time to get an ultrasound done and ask for the sex of the child and then go on a shopping spree.

Women may notice that vaginal discharge becomes heavier in the ninth month. Heartburn and flatulence too may become a bit of a bother. Leg cramps, as well as backaches and a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, may be more pronounced. Braxton Hicks contractions may become more intense, as well as the need to urinate. Women may also find that their breasts may leak.

Irrespective of all these issues that you go through, with pregnancy brings a divine power to be able to manage all these and more. Your desire to start a family imposes upon you a divine responsibility to carry your pregnancy to full term. The emotional and physical symptoms are routine occurrences and all of them can be combated with proper education and information.

How Pregnancy Yoga Helps You Keep Fit and Healthy

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Yoga is an exercise that originated in India with the holy men who would practice meditation for days together without much food and very little water and had to find a way to keep their body and mind alert and healthy. Yoga is an exercise of the mind through, which you learn how to control your body and senses in order to achieve desired results.

Pregnancy is a very happy time in a couple’s life. However, the woman goes through significant chances especially in body weight; this can affect her health in the long run and also the delivery of the baby. Here is how pregnancy yoga can help you keep the weight off and have an easier delivery.

What Pregnancy Yoga Exercises Are Best for You

Yoga usually involves very gentle yet effective exercise to match every person’s health condition and derive the best results. In order for you to get the right pregnancy yoga exercises you will need to consult a yoga instructor who will take in consideration your weight, height, age and the health condition you are in at the moment.

There are pregnancy yoga exercises available for every pregnant woman irrelevant of the physical condition you are in. However, it is important to find out which one is the right one for you and more importantly how to perform it the right way in order not to cause any harm to your body in the process especially when you are pregnant.

Before Starting Pregnancy Yoga

Yoga is relatively simple to perform when you know how to. However, exercising the wrong way may cause muscle strain or other severe damages to the tendons and body especially when pregnant. Pregnancy is a very delicate state and in order to ensure you are not adversely affecting it in any way, it is recommended you start pregnancy yoga only under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

There are also pregnancy yoga DVDs available with full guidance on how to perform each exercise and if you choose that version you need to listen to the instruction carefully and if possible have someone assist you while performing the exercises.

The Benefits Of Pregnancy Yoga

Pregnancy yoga does not cause strain on your body, muscles or mind but helps you relieve stress, keep your body toned and the excess weight off, as we all know pregnant women have a good appetite all during the pregnancy. Yoga will also help you greatly with your delivery as there are specific exercises focused on that area.

Finding The Perfect Baby Name

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

With literally hundreds, if not thousands of baby names to choose from how can you find the right one? During your months of pregnancy you will most likely spend a lot of time thinking about this. Since your child’s name will stay with them for the rest of their lives, it is also one of the first and most important decisions you will make for your child. Here are some tips that may help.

Brainstorm a list of names Sit down with your partner and just brainstorm an initial list of names. Don’t think about first or last names at this point, just names you have heard and like. Remember, the number one rule of brainstorming is to not prejudge. Over the next few weeks continue to add to the list.

Don’t do it alone Everyone must be happy with your child’s name. It is important for both parents to work together and negotiate in order to find a name both will like. During my wife’s pregnancies we would email, leave phone calls and notes with names. We both agreed upfront that both of us would have to like a name to use it. There were many that I loved that she hated and vice versa. It is important to give and take a little to find a name both parents will be happy with.

Don’t forget to solicit parents, friends and relatives. While ultimately it will be your decision and your partners, we found it very helpful to bounce names off of friends and relatives.

The Sound of the Name By now you should have a decent list of names. You may or may not want to throw a few family names into the mix. Now is the time to start combining the names. How do the first and last names sound together? While they may sound good at first, that could change when you add a middle name. Take your names and mix and match first and middle names. Sometimes you will be surprised and what you thought of as a first name may end up as a last name and vice versa.

Think about nicknames, spellings and abbreviations This is important. As your child grows will kids make sure of your child’s name or come up with an unfavorable nickname? Or what seems cute when your child is a baby may not be cute anymore as your child gets older. Another consideration is to take the first letter of your baby’s first, middle and last name and put them together. Does it spell anything unfavorable? Not many parents think of this is not a realization you want to make after the birth certificate is issued!

Research name meanings There are tons of places on the internet where you can find the meaning of a name, and there is a lot of software you can buy. This can be a fun time to explore the origins of a name and may lead you do new names you have not thought about. Are you Irish? Check out some Gaelic names for example.

Pick 3 or 4 names and wait for the baby to arrive This is probably my best advice. What may have seemed like a great name when you decided on it may not ‘fit’ your new child! For example, when our first son was born we instantly knew his name would be Kailan, which has a name meaning of ‘mighty warrior’. He came out at 10 lbs and it was a real fitting name. The birth certificate does not have to be issued right away, so take your time with your new baby before you leave the hospital and see what ‘fits’ his or her looks or attitude!

With so many baby names to chose from, picking the right one will be the most important decision you will make for your child. More information is available from Pregnancy at More4kids.

Beauty Tips for Pregnant Women

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Pregnancy has always been a beautiful miracle. But now it’s considered sexy, too. When Vanity Fair put Demi Moore’s apparently nude, very pregnant body on the cover of their magazine in 1991, it made a lasting statement that said a woman could be both pregnant and gorgeous.

If you’re not ready to show off quite that much, don’t worry. Here are ten beauty tips that will help make you look and feel good while you’re pregnant.

1. Show off your legs. In summer, shorts and sundresses never looked better. In winter, a mini skirt with tights and flat shoes are fashionable.

2. For a special evening out, a pair of stretch-waist black velvet pants and a swingy top looks romantic, even elegant. This is the time you can wear a nice v-neck and show off your new, voluptuous cleavage.

3. Raid your man’s closet for a shirt. Roll up the sleeves and add a piece of jewelry for a feminine touch. Or not. Menswear is long and lose, perfect for pregnancy.

4. Treat yourself to a new bra. Being pregnant means your old size won’t work anymore, because you can gain up to five pounds in your breasts. For most women, a bra with wide set straps that are not too thin helps give much-needed support. Not only is this important to prevent sagging, but wearing the correct size bra will make your clothes look better, too.

5. Add some highlights to your hair. All-over hair color, like dying or bleaching, is not recommended while you’re pregnant, because your scalp absorbs some of the chemicals. (It can be identified in urine.) But adding highlights is safe, because the hair color is applied one-half to one inch from your scalp, so chemicals cannot get into your blood stream.

6. Keep your skin supple with pure cocoa butter. Using a natural moisturizer on your stomach and breasts is safe, and it will help prevent, or at least minimize, stretch marks. Equally important is maintaining a slow, gradual weight gain so your skin doesn’t stretch too rapidly.

7. Forget those old fashioned tent tops that make you look even bigger than you are. It’s now fashionable to flaunt your baby tummy, and stretchy tops and empire waists are flattering. Being pregnant is sexy!

8. Get a pair of pretty ballerina flats. In France, and around Hollywood, they’re all the rage with pregnant and not-pregnant women alike. Invest in a good pair that provides arch support and is made of a breathable material like leather or canvas. A pair of shoes that has a low, wide heel (one to one-and-a-half inches) is also a good choice. Remember, you may need a larger or wider shoe size while you’re pregnant, so try them on before you buy.

9. Wearing a monochrome outfit (all one color) or clothing with vertical lines creates an illusion of length and is flattering for all body types.

10. Buy a chic new handbag. It will make you look fashionable, and you don’t have to worry about outgrowing it later!

And finally, everybody looks better when they’re rested and healthy. Get enough sleep, exercise, and “eat clean.” This is no time for unhealthy junk foods that make you feel sluggish and do your baby no good either. And remember, there are beauty advantages to being pregnant, too.

The “beauty glow” of pregnancy has science to back it up. The increased blood volume and circulation during pregnancy enhances your skin and makes it beautifully luminescent. And thanks to hormonal changes, brittle nails become stronger, and hair becomes shinier. One last thing: never underestimate the radiance that comes from being happy. Many expectant moms say they’ve never felt more beautiful or more alive than when they are pregnant!
