Midwinter Christmas

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

While many in the northern hemisphere are basking in mid-summer sunshine there are some people in Australia and New Zealand enjoying a Midwinter Christmas celebration. Where does this tradition come from? It was a few years ago, when I arrived in New Zealand that I realized that many families of English or European origin have a non recognized tradition in the middle of June. I engaged in the exploration of this amazing tradition celebrated, as far as I know, only in this part of the world.

Christmas as we know it, is celebrated around the world in December, when most northern countries are in winter, and the cold white snow is a feature and icon of the celebration. The celebration is accompanied by a special variety of foods, decorations, traditions that make it such a special event. Christmas is also celebrated in countries where December happens to be summer. Celebration of Christmas in summer comes as a natural event for most South American countries, where immigrants from European countries carried on the tradition and was transmitted from generation to generation for at least the past 100 years. I mean that in these countries, where most people are of Italian-Spanish ancestors, Christmas celebrations are carried on in hot summer days as if it were winter: the turkey, heavy fruit cakes, hot drinks, and even egg nog!. Christmas dinner in New Zealand and Australia does not differ much from a typical turkey dinner. Perhaps the English influence drives people to choose a ham leg and vegetables instead of a roasted turkey meal. And yet Christmas happens to be summer in these countries.

The most important distinction of mid winter Christmas is that is almost exclusively celebrated by immigrants from European countries that find it marvellous to get to rejoice the most celebrated festivity in the world in the warmth of the winter weather conditions. And then, mid winter Christmas started to be celebrated in June. At end of autumn, when the weather is not that cosy, there start family and friend preparation and news to organize a Christmas dinner, in June. Some people state that mid winter Christmas also celebrate the shortest day of the year. Some other do not know what is celebrated but they have been carrying on the tradition with friends that enjoy a good meal and the fun involved in any celebration.

The event has lately been taken as a promotional event for restaurants and pubs that decorate the venue in red and green and tone the candlelight for the occasion. Despite the promotional event , there is no mention of the celebration in the news or even in newspapers. It happens to be a reserved event for those that adore the taste of Christmas in winter.

The Most Overlooked Mother’s Day Gift is a Pocket Knife!

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

As a busy working woman, and mother I am here to tell you that the most cherished gift you can give your mother or wife for Mother’s Day is a nice Pocket Knife! Now, this article might be a hint to my family since I just lost my Pink Edelweiss Classic pocketknife, or it could be a valuable piece of gift-giving advice. Listen to my story and decide for yourself!

My trusty Edelweiss Classic knife served me well for years of living out of the car on my many errands. It was there when I needed to cut the plastic cord between a pair of brand new tennis shoes so I wouldn’t have to trudge through the muddy soccer fields to my daughter’s game in my expensive work shoes. It was also there to cut through all the plastic packaging on CDs my son needed to listen to immediately after purchase. I’m not sure, but I think these CD’s will blow up or some other horrible disaster will happen if you have to wait to listen to them until you get home.

My knife has been my best friend by being there when I had to cut the just noticed loose threads on my coat before going into a job interview. I believe it even helped me get my first raise at that job by being handy when I needed to remove staples during an important board meeting when the staple remover had mysteriously vanished. Always be prepared is not just for Boy Scouts!

I’ll never forget the time I was on a school field trip with the children’s science class when the science teacher ended up with a splinter. My pocketknife was the only thing that was handy to help pry that splinter out of the whining science teacher’s thumb. Who wants to be on a trip with a grouchy science teacher? The kids and other parents were very happy that my little knife was able to save the day!

I believe my little pocketknife and I parted company the day I was trying to carry too many shopping bags and spilled my purse. It was a sad day indeed for me, a happy one for the person who found it lying there ready for the next adventure.

So, now I’m shopping for a new pocketknife and secretly hoping that my significant other or beautiful children will want to present me with one for Mother’s Day. Either another sturdy Edelweiss Classic, or maybe they’ll splurge for the Stockman Pink Ice by Hen and Rooster. Something with a lot of class that works hard, just like me!

If my story has led you to see the value of giving the gift of a pocketknife, you will be surprised to find out how many different styles and sizes they come in. At any price range and taste, a pocketknife is one gift that will keep on giving!

Should You Work for Yourself (Five Questions to Ask)?

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

While working for someone else, have you ever thought, I wish I could be my own boss. Then I wouldn’t have to put up with this!

Maybe the question isn’t whether you’ve thought that, but how many times.

Choosing to be an entrepreneur could be the smartest move you’ve ever made. Or it could be the biggest disaster. Running your own business is like being paid a straight commission. As Bruce Williams, host of the finance-oriented Bruce Williams Show, the nation’s longest-running radio talk show says, The worst jobs in the world are straight commission sales. And the best jobs in the world are straight commission sales.

Early in my career, I had two opportunities at self-employment. One was a mistake, the other was a success.

The bust came after an oppressive job experience. I didn’t respect the company’s management or like the way they treated their employees (especially me). With little fanfare, one day I walked into my boss’s office and announced (rather stupidly), I quit!

Since I had no immediate prospects for another job, I decided to buy myself a position. I hastily arranged to purchase a franchise.

I plunked down $4,000 for training, equipment and the rights to sell a product in a specific geographic territory. I quickly found out that running a business consists of a lot more that depositing daily receipts in the bank.

For starters, I discovered that the clever name I had chosen for my business had already been claimed by another company. When asked, the firm expressed little interest in changing its name to accommodate me. By then, however, I had already ordered reams of promotional material bearing my name.

Since I was attempting to resolve other start-up issues, I had neither the time or the inclination to sell my product - another critical mistake. I didn’t want to start pitching the business until I had my act together. I just never seemed to get to that point.

In the meantime, the franchise company went out of business (no wonder its accountant seemed so surly when I asked questions about the operation). My own bankruptcy loomed around the corner until a previous (but not the most recent) employer heard of my predicament and called to offer me my old job back.

Undaunted, several years later, I chose to work for myself a second time. Wiser now, I limited my risk by choosing a part-time opportunity - providing musical entertainment for weddings and corporate parties - and sought advice from a knowledgeable friend in the record business (yes, this was before the time of CDs) before I got started and developed a business plan.

This time, instead of paying a franchise fee, I made about the same initial investment in the equipment I would need. I then promoted my business to every hotel and banquet manager in town. One catering manager took a liking to me (because I had sent out hand-written notes) and, until my regular job required me to relocate to another state, our 13-year association was mutually beneficial.

The business was successful, with my wife and I performing as a team at over 400 events during that time period. We earned an hourly rate that rivaled the wages of many vice presidents (doubled on New Years Eve) and experienced highs on the job that rarely been matched since. And it helped serve as a foundation for my speaking and training career. The thrill and satisfaction gained from several hundred guests on their feet cheering approval for a job well done is indescribable. How often does that happen back at the office?

One survey showed that 97% of Americans are better off working for someone else. (Did you ever wonder how numbers like this get calculated?)

To determine if you would be better off in the 3% minority, ask yourself these five questions:

1) Could I provide a value-added product or service sufficiently different from current offerings in the marketplace? This is known as your Unique Selling Proposition (USP). All businesses and even those of us who work for somebody else need to determine our personal USP.

2) Do I have adequate start-up and operation capital to last me six months to a year? Things always take longer than we expect. Lack of cash flow is the number one reason most businesses fail.

3) Could I cost effectively reach my target market? Sales and marketing consume 50 percent of the typical organization’s time, efforts and money. Certainly don’t believe the old adage, If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door. Maybe they will, but first they have to know about it.

4) Do I have the passion and personality to go it alone? As an entrepreneur, you’ll likely be wearing many hats at least initially, including receptionist, salesperson, IT guru, accountant, tax attorney, administrative assistant, HR expert, marketing director, customer service department, custodian and operations manager. Whew! And it can be lonely without much of a support staff with whom to bounce ideas.

5) Would a competitor or other outside influence be able to force me under? Unlike forty or fifty years ago, the world of retailing, for instance, is dominated by the big box stores. What niche is currently being under served that you could profitably serve? Don’t try to create a product or service for everybody, Seth Godin tells us in his marketing best-seller Purple Cow, because that is a product or service for nobody.

If you can’t answer these five questions properly and decide to forge ahead anyway, the decision could cost you your life savings.

However, if you can answer these questions to your satisfaction, by not making the decision to move ahead could cost you some of the most rewarding experiences of your working life. So enjoy the ride!

A Closer Look at the Types of Brochure

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Brochures are very common in the marketing world. In fact there are so many commercial printers that cater brochure printing for everyone. There are also different software tools available to help you make unique brochure designs. But for you to end up with the best brochure you need to be familiar with the various factors that affect its total marketing impact.

Keep in mind that brochure printing should be done with great attention to detail. Everything should be taken into consideration. Brochures exist to help shoppers come up with a smart decision in buying products. For this reason, brochures should be created based on what you need. This is very important to be able to turn prospects into regular customers.

Think about what type of brochure you need. There are several brochure types that you must take into account to arrive at the right type that will comply with your business. Specifically these refer to the following:

1. Point-of-Sale Brochures. This type of brochures is the ones that you usually see at the bank. If you’re thinking on making a point-of-sale brochure, you should come up with an attention-grabbing headline and images as well. Remember this brochure is designed to draw the attention of the customers and persuade them to keep it.

2. Leave-behinds. This brochure type refers to the brochures or pamphlets that you hand out to customers. When you’re planning to produce leave-behinds you should keep in mind to compose a detailed description of the products that offer along with their specific benefits. Your aim here is to make a brochure that will stay forever in the minds of the customers.

3. Sales Support Tool. This type of brochure is comparable with the leave-behinds. The difference only lies in the fact that this can be utilized for selling. Brochures of this sort also serve as a guide for salesmen when increasing their sales. Mainly, the brochures are composed of large pictures, pages and headlines.

4. Respond to Inquiries. This brochure is what most marketers give out to customers who are interested in buying your products and services. This is intended for buyers who would like to make a purchase of what you’re offering. It’s important that the brochure is loaded with facts to entice the customers to buy your products.

5. Direct Mail. This classification of brochure is the one that you can include to your direct mail marketing plan. Brochures used in direct mailing are composed of photos of your products along with your selling points.

Being familiar with all these type of brochure, you can discover which brochure will make you stand out. When you have identified what you want, it’s time to dwell on what brochure printing service you will use.

Valentine’s Day - Should We Confine Love to One Day?

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

Love is in air, romance is ruling everyone’s mind and the markets are flooded with chocolates, cute stuffed toys, mushy greetings cards and other goodies with lovey-dovey messages. Yes, it’s the day of lovers and friends, the day to express your love and affection to someone very special and to celebrate and spend time with someone who means the world to you - your beloved, your valentine!

Valentine’s Day is here along with the season for cards, roses and chocolates. But sad is the fact that not many of us know its true importance and the reasons for the widespread celebration of this day. Today, it is just another excuse to celebrate, to exchange gifts and for the card and chocolate companies to make some quick money.

Youngsters view the day as the reason to go out on some extra-special dates, to propose to their crushes and to make some new girlfriends or boyfriends. But the very beauty and importance of the day has been lost in this commercialisation.

Valentine’s Day has been connected to various stories. Legend links the day to a Roman priest, Valentine. It is believed that Emperor Claudius II forbade young men to marry as he felt that unwed men made stronger soldiers. Valentine disobeyed the emperor’s orders and solemnised the marriage of the young couples. He was apprehended and the emperor condemned him to death. St Valentine suffered martyrdom on 14 February 270 AD and, ever since, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated on 14 February.

Today, the meaning of the day might be confined to expressing love to your boyfriends or girlfriends but the day is made for you to express your feeling and warmth to all those for whom you care, anyone can be your valentine - a friend, a soul mate, your parents, your siblings or just about anyone who occupies an important place in your life. It is the day for sweethearts - be it your lover, fiancee, wife, husband, brother, sister or anyone with whom you share a special bond.

Different people feel differently about the hype that surrounds Valentine’s Day. Some wonder why the expression of a special emotion should be confined to one single day. Love is like magic and the day it comes into your life, that day becomes even more special than Valentine’s Day. There is not something that you can plan.

On the contrary, for a few, it is about keeping one day apart for the whole of society to come together to make their loved ones feel special and worthy. Valentine’s Day celebrates all shades and spheres of love. It is the celebration of love of all kinds. Even if you are not in a relationship, you can celebrate the day with equal zest.

No matter what your age is or to what part of the world you belong to, if you value love, togetherness and heart-felt emotions, it is the day for you to celebrate. Besides the gifts, cards and lovely red roses, it is the day to lock some wonderful memories forever into your heart. It is about celebrating a special bond and to appreciate someone in a very unique and exclusive manner.

And just remember, feelings are beyond the fragrance of the flowers and the mesmerising words on a card. Someone’s wallet does not measure the love he or she has for you.

Everyone has a different perception of the importance of Valentine’s Day. If you truly love a person then the whole year is as special as Valentine’s Day, say some people. But there are others who wait the whole year to say those three golden words to someone, “I love you.”

NO PLANNING FOR LOVE

For Laura, every moment that she spends with her loved one is special. She does not need a special day to express her love and gratitude to someone whom she holds too close to her heart, although she feels that Valentine’s Day gives one another excuse to party or have a nice dinner with family and friends. You take time out from your hectic work schedule to spend some valuable moments with your loved ones. But that is where her definition of Valentine’s Day ends.

Aryan has a similar opinion. According to him, love cannot be planned. It can happen any time, on any day, at any moment.

He does not think that it would become more special or everlasting if you express it on Valentine’s Day. You might take the day as an opportunity to reassure someone of your love for him or her. It is just like any other day when you tell your sweetie how much he or she means to you.

For Jim and Stephanie, Valentine’s Day has double importance. It is the day when the two of them got married 15 years ago. At that time, they were not even aware of such a day, so it is not very special one for the two of them.

There are some who believe in spreading love every day while, for others, Valentine’s Day is as special and important as the other festivals we all celebrate. Some find stuffed toys that say, “I Love You” or “You are special” really cute while, for others, they are the most stupid things to gift someone. The perception of Valentine’s Day is different for every individual. Valentine’s Day is a day solely devoted to love, warmth, affection and togetherness. It is the day to raise a special toast to a relationship that means the world to you.

But, in recent times, it has just become another way for people to make money. It is kind of hurting to see the day and a beautiful emotion being measured and judged in terms of material presents. Probably this is the order of the day, as we see that even other festivals have become all about exchanging expensive gifts.

True love does not need a bouquet of a hundred roses or a sparkling diamond. It is more about the depth of your love for someone.

And for those friends, who do not have a valentine, don’t pull a long face. You can indeed have loads of fun even if there is no one special in your life to whom you can dedicate this day.

CELEBRATION TIME

Just go out for a party with all your single buddies and eat, drink, dance and make merry. No one says that you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day if you don’t have a date. And you never know, you may arrive back home with the one you were looking for.

So go out and explore. Plan a get-together of all your old buddies. Spend the day watching a movie and just hanging out with friends. And if you are feeling bad about the fact no one is there to shower gifts on you, just gift yourself. Buy some cool stuff for yourself.

Decorate your room with flowers, candles and pictures of the most memorable moments of your life. And if you are good with words, just go ahead and write something special to make the occasion special.

Just make yourself feel exclusive. Celebrate the day by pampering yourself and making your surroundings pleasant and beautiful.

Valentine’s Day is not about confining love to one day or measuring the depth of someone’s love and affection in material terms. It is just about devoting a day solely to all your loved ones.

It is like giving everyone a common platform to celebrate the happiness of being with someone, dedicating 24 hours to spread, express and celebrate love and the emotion that has the power to overshadow all realms of life.

Are There Really Such Things As Free Ringtones Online

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

People can be wildly predictable creatures at times. Now, this is not to say that all people act in an identical manner, but it does infer that there are certain traits that all people share equally. Probably the most common trait people share is the part of human nature that attracts people to getting a good deal on a product.

Simply put, people love to get things for nothing. There really is no better deal than a deal that offers an item free of charge with no strings attaches and, most importantly, offers a product that is very valuable and appreciated. Now, keep in mind, getting something for “nothing” does not refer to acquiring something without any effort. It refers to getting a good or service without having to pay for it!

There will be those people, however, who prefer to stay away from free items because there is some justifiable aversions towards free products because of the fear that a free product may not be reliable. As such, a person with aversions or fears of this nature will skip out on acquiring the free item and instead will make a paid purchase instead. In a way, the consumer is playing the game of “better safe than sorry.” When it comes to the realm of free ringtones online, however, such aversions and fears are not well founded as many free ringtone companies provide the proper service that they promise to deliver and do so without making the person benefiting from them incur any unnecessary costs.

Free ringtones can be acquired a number of different ways, but the most common means of acquisition is to download the ringtones from a reputable ringtone dealership. While some of the less computer literate consumers may quake in the knees (slightly) when hearing the word “download,” the reality of the matter is that downloading and installing free ringtones is not all that complicated of a procedure.

Furthermore, many free ringtones online service providers also offer wallpaper, text messaging free ringtones, and a host of other fun accessories for the cell phone. This is why it would be a wise idea to glance over a free ringtones online provider and see what else the service offers. There might be something in there that you never thought of before that really catches your eyes!

Now, some of the more cynical people in the world may view adding so many accessories to a cell phone as a bit of overkill. The reality is that nothing is further from the truth as more and more people have been “loading up” their cell phones with a number of accessory attachments that make the ringing of the cell phone turn into a fun, light hearted event as opposed to merely the sound of a phone ringing or buzzing.

5 Best Ways To Make Money Online

Monday, May 14th, 2007

There are many different ways to make money on the Internet. Here is an overview of the five most popular online business models:

Sell Digital Products

The term “digital product” means that the product is delivered electronically. The customers will download the product to their computers. Some examples of digital products are downloadable e-books, audio/MP3, graphics (clipart and stock photography), video and software.

The digital product business model is very popular because there is no inventory, no shipping and no fulfillment cost. Since the product is an electronic file, it costs you nothing to make an extra copy - therefore, the profit margin is 100%!

Sell Physical Products

“Physical products” are the products that are shipped to customers through the mail. Customers place orders on your website and you ship the products to them.

There are several ways to get those products - you can make them yourself (for example, arts and crafts), buy them directly from a manufacturer or buy from a wholesaler (at quantity discounts).

If you don’t want to deal with the inventory and shipping, another alternative is to use a dropshipping service. Dropshipping means that the inventory is stored at the wholesaler company. You collect the customer information and payment, give it to the dropshipping company and they ship the product to the customer. Your profit is the difference between what the customer paid you and what you paid to the dropshipper.

Become An Affiliate

Affiliates send visitors to other companies’ websites and get paid a percentage of all the sales they refer. You don’t have to worry about creating websites, dealing with customers, shipping and payment processing. Your only job is to advertise those websites and send people there. People will buy products from those websites and you will be paid your commission.

When you become an affiliate, you will be given a unique link with a tracking code. In your advertising, you will send people to that link. This unique code will ensure that all the sales will be properly credited to you.

Sell Advertising

If you have a website that gets a lot of visitors, you can sell advertising on it. Other companies will pay you for advertising space on your site, just like they pay to advertise in magazines and newspapers.

That’s how all those “free websites” make money - they sell advertising. Free content attracts a lot of visitors. The higher is the number of people who visit the website, the more money you can make from advertising.

Provide Services

There are many types of services that can be done on the computer through the Internet. The most common examples of such services are website design, programming, graphic design, writing, data entry and transcription.

Many companies will gladly pay someone to do computer work for them on a project basis, so they don’t have to hire full-time employees. As long as the work can be done without face-to-face interaction, you can do it from home on your computer and make money.

How To Find Unique Easter Eggs

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Easter Eggs

Easter would not be Easter without Easter eggs. This symbol has been a part of this spring time holiday for generations. Easter Egg decorating is something that we all love to do and various countries and cultures each have, over the years, developed their own unique ways of making Easter eggs and special and memorable part of this holiday. Traditionally given as gifts, lets take a look to see how different countries have developed different styles of Easter egg decorating based on their own unique culture.

Poland-Polish Easter eggs come in several different types depending on how the Easter egg is created. There are various ways these can be created one way is by boiling the egg in a mixture of plants to create a particular color, the color depends on the blanks used. Brown is created by boiling the eggs in onion peels, black, oak or alder bark or walnut. This process is called Kraszanki, malowanki or byczki and these types of polish Easter eggs take their name from it.

After the eggs have finished boiling and are dyed designs are carved into them by scratching the surface of the egg with a sharp tool, this takes off the dye in the scrapped areas creating a white design. Pisanki are created by either drawing within a coating of wax placed over the egg or by drawing with wax the egg is then placed into a dye bath. These are traditionally handed out on Easter Sunday and shared during a meal.

The Ukraine Easter egg is created in a very similar process to the Polish Easter egg however the designs are usually complex geometric shapes, works of art in themselves, they are given as gifts of great honor during the Easter holiday season. Greece- Traditional Greek Easter eggs are dyed a solid red to symbolize the resurrection and how Christ’s blood washed away the sins of man.

Germany and Austria- These two closely related countries share a common and diverse culture reflected in their Easter egg practices, These two countries share a common practice of decorating hollow eggs or passing green eggs out on the Thursday after Easter Sunday.

British Isles- Here Easter egg decorating shows up in a variety of styles and colors, usually far simpler than Eastern Europe’s practices, however, the British have something truly unique to do with their Easter Eggs, they roll them, the object, is to make it down the hill rolling your egg without breaking it.

The United States is truly a melting pot, here people of all nations and cultures gather so naturally reflected in our Easter Eggs, a prime example the White House Egg Roll. Obviously the modern day easter egg has become a chocolate creation rather than the more traditional decorative one. That said many countries still carry on the tradition of the easter egg hunt. However if you were to ask people in the street what their idea of an easter egg is you would probably find that they would say the chocolate easter eggs.
