Indian College Graduates Need Some Training In English

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I came to India in order to access its workforce and I expected that all college graduates have strong language skills in English. After I spent a couple of months, I found that Indian college graduates have a lot of potential to become great workforce; however, they need some training when jobs require them to speak and write in English competently. Especially when they work for companies headquartered in US, UK, Australia and Canada (and other English speaking countries), the training is mandatory. The followings are areas in which they need some training.

Indian college graduates tend to write incomplete sentences and make many grammatical mistakes. Also they omit commas, periods and apostrophes. They often forget to capitalize certain letters, too. When they are instructed to not make those mistakes, they make a lot less mistakes. Also in most cases, they can find mistakes that they make. However, some training is definitely needed in this area so that they write properly subconsciously. All courses in college are taught in English expect for language courses like Hindi, Chinese and Spanish, but after all, they are not used to speak and write in English as a part of their daily life; this is probably the reason why they make mistakes that even they recognize.

Another common problem is spelling; more specifically, too many words are spelled in the way that they are often used in chartrooms and text messaging. While they understand that they cannot use spellings used in chartrooms and text messaging when they write official documents, they subconsciously use those spellings because it is a habit. Some training is needed in this area also.

Generally speaking, if they can write while they make few grammatical mistakes and make few misspellings, they can handle most tasks in English, but once they take senior positions such as managers and consultants who directly work with clients of American nationals and British nationals, they need to be able to convey what they intend to inform very clearly in their writing. Most Indian college graduates lack experience in this type of writing. It is true that even native English speakers need to practice to be good at this type of writing, but that obviously does not imply that Indian college graduates are excused because of that. On the contrary, they need to practice even more to be at least as competent as native English speaker college graduates.

Also Indian college graduates have a recognizable accent. It is not absolutely necessary for them to change their accent, but they should learn how to speak slightly differently. For example, they can speak slowly. They can imitate Americans and British (and other English speaking people). While having an accent is not a technical problem, it can result in a communication problem. It is rather important that they recognize that they are not making any technical mistakes in this regard, but it is also important that they need to change the way in which they speak slightly when they speak with Americans and British (and other English speaking people).

Over all, Indian college graduates have good language skills in English, but they are a bit rough. They have a lot of potential, but if they want to become competitive, some training in English is needed.

Outsource or Else!

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Outsourcing and its corresponding job losses in the US continue to create endless arguments, as expected.

All of a sudden the fact that some jobs – quite a few really – continue to be exported is becoming a political issue. All of a sudden also, a number of “experts” make the case for or against job losses but always blaming one or the other political faction in the country for what they consider the most alarming job drain in history since Augustus allowed those specialist of his who could read crow innards, to accept jobs in the provinces of the Empire.

“What is the story, Professor? I went to have some changes made in my web page and I found that the company’s computer services are now operating from a place called Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh, which for all I know could be in West Texas or north of London”

“Not quite, it is about 400 miles west of Calcutta and, while not famous otherwise, it has an excellent University and a first rate hospital. I am not surprised that they got into the technical support racket for third parties, like many companies in India. But do not be alarmed. Put the shoe on the other foot. Just imagine for a minute that all those foreign companies operating in the United States, that employ hundreds of thousands of Americans, are accused by the public in their countries of exporting their jobs, ruining entire families, destroying the tenuous fiber of their economies, attempting against their homeland and in general denying employment to millions of their citizens. Sound familiar? Do they blame their local Bill Clinton for all that?”

“Yes, but. Some people make it sound like in a few years there won’t be any more white collar jobs in the country and our citizens will be forced to emigrate to Mexico to tend gardens, build those cozy adobe homes and distill desert cactus, or is it cacti?”
“Listen, figures always talk. The latest official data shows that around 200,000 jobs that were performed here by local employees, have gone abroad in the last three years. Of these, a good half are from companies that have traditionally operated all over, like Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett Packard and others in the IT racket.

In a normal economic atmosphere we create more than 3 million jobs a year in that sector; problem is that our economic climate is not always predictable and affects employment in many ways. This also has to do with the employment cycle: at retirement age many are forced to continue working, thus reducing the available job pool. For an eager politician, job losses, from assigning local employees to overseas posts, outsourcing or ’selling out to foreign companies’, is a cause as good as any to prepare a speech, deliver it and get his name in his local paper. You can blame anyone for all this, beginning with the President, through favored targets like Democrats, Republicans, Al Sharpton, Ralph Nader and the Choir of St. Patrick’s”
“I am beginning to understand all this, Professor. But what do I do about my Web Page?”
“Train your gardener to make Web Pages!”

Profile of Comedian Ron White

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Ron, “Tater Salad”, White was born on December 18, 1956 in Fritch, Texas. He is a classic standup comedian. His back ground is indicative of the early years of stand up comedy before the days of DVDs and Comedy Central on cable television. His early years were a struggle as he went from club to club driving a beat up Nissan pick-up truck. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, and was in trouble over drugs right after his return. Biographical data on his early years is sketchy at best. Most of the information about his life comes from his comedy routines and is somewhat unreliable.

Ron White burst into the national limelight when he teamed with fellow comedians, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvalls, and Larry the Cable Guy, in a show called “The Blue Collar Comedy Tour.” The tour produced several popular shows, albums, and a full length DVD that was a best seller. Afterwards, the other three members of the tour went on to star in a regular Comedy Central series based on the Blue Collar tour. Although he has often appeared on the show as a guest, White was not a regular. He gave his reasons for this as not wanting to be type cast as “Blue Collar”, and he did not have the work ethic necessary for a regular TV show.

This decision did not hurt his career. His first solo comedy CD, “Drunk in Public”, was released in 2003. It sold over 450,000 copies and spent months on Billboard’s Top Ten Comedy list. A follow up album called, “You Can’t Fix Stupid”, has also enjoyed great success and has propelled Ron White into the upper echelon of stand up comedians today.

Ron White’s comic style is considered to be very traditional stand up comedy. It is very conversational and mixes honest observations about everyday life with razor sharp wit. A master of image, he dresses entirely in black and always is smoking a cigarette or cigar during his act. He also always is sipping from a glass of scotch whiskey, and alcohol is often a big part of his humor.

He was married to Jeff Foxworthy’s interior decorator in 2004 and currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Ron White is a comedian in a classic mold. He has been in trouble with the law over drugs and alcohol use in the past, although not really serious trouble. He is not involved in movies, and his experience in television is limited to his comedy specials. His forte is stand up comedy and he excels at it. He is currently very active on the tour cycle and remains one of America’s more popular comedians.

Who to Outsource in Today’s Competitive Marketplace? An Idea About Where India and China Stand?

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Outsourcing! Dazed of its popularity? But do you really know why outsourcing is the most highlighting trend in the IT industry today? And who are the major contenders? Let’s have a smart idea about outsourcing and its ongoing emergence. In simpler words, to concentrate more on the core competencies and target business, global companies drive their software jobs to low wage countries like India which provides not only the low priced quality product on time but also a healthy experience and long term business relationships. Despite all hues and cries, outsourcing is still emerging as a preferred practice in developed countries to take advantage of resources and trained manpower of offshore countries like India, China, Philippines, etc. And it would really be a strategic howler for any company or organization today not to think about outsourcing as a strategic and significant initiative to thrive & even survive in current marketplace.

Almost every vigilant company is considerate about outsourcing bearing in mind the need of the market, for high quality work done at competitive prices. Now question is who to go for? There are so many contenders for providing services at low prices. But there are many other things beyond prices nowadays that are considered. Be it knowledge processing or software outsourcing, the Chinese tech economy has been racing forward, but neighbor India has achieved an easy lead in the field of software outsourcing and other Hi-tech jobs coming from offshore European and other global companies.

Recently, one of the consulting firms revealed its analysis saying that fragmentation of China’s software-outsourcing industry is a limitation. Out of over 8000 software service providers in China, only 7-8 have more than 2000 employees. On the contrary, India has fewer than 3,000 software services providers but more than 15 of the companies have employee strength beyond 2000, including major software, like Infosys Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro Technologies. Furthermore, revenue from information technology services in China is just about half of India’s $12.7 billion a year.

It is completely true and hard fact that outsourcing has shared the jobs of European countries but same way these global organizations are contended with the low priced and high quality services from Indian service providers. Overall, defenders advocates outsourcing that actually help the US economy. No doubt, China is having a workforce of talented minds but things, like lower number of employees, communication and language problem hampers the way to outsourcing. Apart from great English speaking strength, the processes followed by Indian companies are performed in a rigorous environment assuring, testing and confirming the strength and solid quality of the products and services.

Well, outsourcing software development and other services and projects to lower-wage nations is in some ways believed as an evolution of the overseas flow of manufacturing work. Today, if China has been a manufacturing leader, India has appeared as an all rounder and the king in providing services, with a significant number of offshore development centers.

Bee Pollen Allergies

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Bee pollen allergies can range from extremely severe to very mild and even unnoticeable. Bee pollen allergies should be taken quite serious as the affects from suffering a severe reaction can be anaphylactic shock in which the throat swells shut. Bee pollen allergies can also be so mild that although the sufferer experiences a rash on the arm, deems it to be insignificant or doesn’t attribute it to the bee pollen. If you suffer from bee pollen allergies, you should steer clear of bee pollen products.

The good products made of pure bee pollen can be free of flower pollen but the less expensive brands of products quite often, have flower pollen in the products. This indicates sloppy manufacturing process on behalf of the supplier and should be avoided at all costs. It is suggested that no matter your bee pollen allergies or no bee pollen allergies, to add bee pollen supplements slowly to your diet.

Studies and Bee Pollen Allergies

There have been some relatively new studies done in which bee pollen is introduced to the allergic body to try to build up immunity towards the substance that invades its body. It works by desensitizing the body and promotes it to make antibodies that will stop the productions of the histamines that cause allergic reaction and reduce effects suffered from bee pollen allergies.

In the United States, there was a doctor named Dr. Leo Conway, M.D. who conducted a private study of bee pollen allergies and effects through his private practice. He treated his patients with bee pollen allergies with bee pollen injections, much like allergy shots, to build up the body’s defense against the allergic reaction when bee pollen is introduced into the body.

Along with bee pollen allergies, his patients had many other types of allergies and were all treated the same. After a considerable amount of time, Dr. Leo found that all of the patients he treated with bee pollen remained free and clear of their allergy symptoms.

The patients all came from different backgrounds and from a variety of lifestyles, as Dr. Leo believed that this would be a more effective way to process the results. It turned out that all of his patients, regardless of location or diet had the same results.

The product we personally use, located in the pristine source of New Zealand, is the most natural bee pollen source we have come across - http://www.bee-health-product.com

We have been using this supplement for over 3 years with excellent health results. We have achieved a general sense of well being and new improved energy levels.

We highly recommend you check out our bee pollen supplement of choice for further information.

Web Based Time Management

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Time Tracking with Timeclock, a buzz work in the workforce industry these days. Lets get into this and try to understand the goodies.

Vendors say it enables the collection and approval of electronic timesheets for managing payroll, time and attendance, project accounting, client billing, and many other time reporting needs. It also delivers real ROI with a robust feature set and low cost of ownership that fits virtually any size budget. You can quickly automate your timesheet collection and approval process.

However automate your timesheet collection process for any organization is not an easy task, since transferring the old data into the new system is by itself a huge task. Secondly asking employees who till date used to make entries in the register to start using the new system is again at times a very tired-some task and also requires a regular monitoring. However the lasting effects can always allow employees to enter and submit timesheets from anywhere via the web as well. These systems minimizes administration efforts by reducing errors and cost associated with consolidating timesheet data. Exporting timesheet data to Quick Books, XML, Excel, text, etc also gets easy with such systems.

Here you are always open for two commonly sold options, installed software and web based solutions. Some like us prefer installed software since when you have just 5 to 15 employees to manage a web based solution gets more expensive. However larger the size of the company the calculations gets reverse. With larger companies web based solutions go well with no data maintenance, no servers to manage.

There is always a third option to go back to olden days, withs books and registers and not relying on machines. In olden days employers used to rely on humans and today we rely on machines and humans both. Technology brings in new advanced features into our lives along with a much higher level of dependency.

Webmaster Staff Leasing – A Webmaster’s Saving Grace

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

TIME. That is the one thing that all webmasters do not have in abundance. Unknown to some, managing a website is not a piece of cake. The mind-boggling, back-breaking effort that goes into the development and management of a website is overwhelming and more than enough to daunt the faint of heart. Think about those webmasters who are managing not one, but three or more websites everyday… they need help.

This is where outsourcing comes in. Outsourcing is like manna from heaven both for agents and clients. Agents are able to find a decent paying job while clients get more value for their money. Not only will they be able to hire professionals at a fraction of the cost they would have paid for an upfront employee, they are also freed from the hassles of the hiring process and planning for the compensations of an employee.

Leasing an agent to do the tasks that you could no longer handle alone at a minimum cost is appealing to a lot of webmasters. Some of them acquire the help of a freelancer while those who know better lease a full-time agent from a staff leasing company. So what’s the difference between a freelancer and a full-time agent? Although there are some freelancers who do deliver quality work, and gets the job done on time, the bulk of the lot generally think in terms of quantity and not quality. A job done on time does not necessarily mean a job done well. This is where a full-time agent differs, hiring an agent from a staff leasing company guarantees you complete control of the tasks you want done. You will be able to get more quality work since the agent you will be hiring will be working for you alone 8hrs/day, 5days a week. That’s real value for your money.

Having a dedicated agent that you can trust and who will be able to do the tedious, repetitive tasks for your websites will give you the much needed time to concentrate on serious matters. It will put you way ahead of your competitors since you will have the time to ponder and plan your business strategy in order for your venture to take off while they are still up to their necks in data entry work. Now, that’s real business sense.
