Some Thoughts On Expanding Your Business

You may have found yourself in this position. You had hoped for it, planned for it, envisioned it and in some weird way feared it. It is called “expanding your business.” It is called “growing your business” and seeing it do things that you were not really sure was going to happen.

That is where we have found ourselves. In the last eight months we have seen unbelievable, unfathomable growth in our business. More than the people we have can handle. Good problem. Right?

Well, yes it is, but it also brings its challenges. We have the kind of business which we have office locations in two states. We have been covering our business out of home offices, but recent growth demands that we not only move into one new office location but two, since we are in separate states. It means hiring support staff, and additional valued partners (our sales staff.) It means not just hiring, but the inevitable slew of things that come with growth.

Now we have to coordinate phone systems that cover a host of people in multiple locations, and office equipment from computers to desks, and from printers to chairs. It means double rent and multiple extra expenses.

Most people think growth is great. I am of that opinion also. But it hit me recently that though growth is fantastic and means that we can service more people, satisfy more needs, help hire more people and expand our brand, it also comes with a price.

Being smaller meant less complicated problems. It meant making decisions that would have less impact on fewer people. It meant that sometimes the pace was slower and you could take time to smell the roses.

Now, the pace is faster…the amount of people affected by decisions greater…and the impact we have on lives bring more responsibility. Is it wonderful that we have expanded to a national company and soon to be international. Yes! It means we are doing the right kind of things.

But it reminds me also to keep things and people in perspective. It reminds me that the opportunity for error is greater, that there is more chance by people to hurt the cause if we are not ever on the lookout. It reminds me of where we have come and that Someone much greater than we have been guiding and directing, and that we must never forget the trust that people have in our name and integrity.

Growth is certainly great. But it reminds me to never forget our core values and those very important people that work everyday to make it happen in our company. I am eternally grateful for them.

In my musings, i am reminded to caution you that when you grow, never forget. Do not forget where you came from and how you got to where you are. Do not forget to continue your core values and your integrity and honesty.Yes the furnishings may change, and the amount of customers may increase, but always stay the course. It will not let you down. You will be able to sleep well at the end of the day.

Demographics Indicate Increase in Crime Ahead

There’s a segment of our population that has become more evident than ever before. Seeing these individuals lying on bus stop benches, pushing their worldly possessions in rusty old shopping carts or sleeping in their cars is disturbing to say the least. I’m talking of course about the homeless.

It’s not just about the 50 to 70 year old male with dirty tattered clothes, a long grey beard and a weather-beaten sack hanging over his shoulder resembling a Santa Claus gone bad. I’m unfortunately referring to families with children that nationally make up approximately 40% of the homeless population.

The primary causes of homelessness are lack of affordable housing, poverty, and domestic violence (which incidentally accounts for 35% of the cases). A startling statistic is that the typical homeless family in the United States and Canada is composed of a single mother, about thirty years old, with between two and three children.

There are many crimes which attract the young homeless as means of survival. One such crime consists of stealing and selling stolen goods attained through burglaries. These desperate thieves often arm themselves with weapons such as broken glass, razor blades, knives and even hammers as part of their survival kit.

Unfortunately, this extremely complex social problem can’t help but impact the quality of life in our communities. Knowing how to deal with the criminal element in this multi-faceted social issue is extremely important. Remember to stay rational, don’t let criminals slip under the radar by playing the unfortunate card.

We must not overlook the laws by allowing compassion to win over common sense. Laws were written for everybody to obey, including the homeless. If their activities become unlawful, it is our duty as citizens to notify the police. This is essential if we want to support a healthy and safe community for our families to live in.

Homeless people are usually drawn to areas that provide shelter, water, clothing and food. This could be a commercial or residential location depending on the demographics.

It’s a natural feeling to want to help a homeless person by handing them money, however it is advised not to give any money or food to a stranger, regardless of their appearance. You could be inviting a criminal into your life, exposing you or your family to a potential dangerous situation.

Don’t let your heart of gold grant a homeless person the privilege of camping on your property for the night. This is not advisable, as a one night stay usually turns into a permanent location to store shopping carts, bedding or personal belongings.

Some good security enhancements to discourage unwanted visitors to your home or business can be attained by restricting access to overhangs, alcoves or other areas protected from inclement weather. Turn off water or remove handles from outside water spouts.

Make sure that all garbage cans are locked in secured receptacles. Install motion lighting around the problem area and make sure that all shrubs and bushes are trimmed back or removed to open up sight lines to your home or business.

Being homeless is not a crime. I prefer to judge a person on their actions as opposed to their appearance. However if we want to keep our communities safe we must be aware that the homeless are not exempt from the criminal element.

Ten Tips For a New Director of Workplace Safety

The job of safety director can and should be one of the most rewarding jobs in industry. After all, you get paid to make sure people have a happy and safe day at work - or at least that they leave with the same number of fingers and toes that they come in with.

If you are taking over an existing program, you are gong to be expected to improve no matter how good the previous person was. If you are just starting a new safety program, you will be faced with the challenges of changing the way people think about safety.

Here are some important tips that will help guide you to having a successful experience as a safety director:

  1. Know your personal goals. In order to feel successful in any job, you have to know how that job fits into your own life goals. Know what your expectations are of your self. Make sure you have personal goals that are satisfied by this job.
  2. Know and understand your company’s stance on safety. While most major companies have a genuine interest in keeping their employees safe and highly motivated, some companies have safety programs because they have to. Again make sure the companies goals align with your personal goals.
  3. Get to know your workers. Spend time on the factory floor. Make the workers feel comfortable talking to you. You will get a lot more cooperation from them in times of change if they feel you really care about their safety.
  4. Really care about the safety of the employees. Remember that assembly line workers have a different attitude toward work than professionals. While you may never consider doing an unsafe act at work, many employees will do whatever it takes to keep a job or to look like a hero at work. Understand the motivation of the employees and take the precautions necessary to protect them.
  5. Focus on real problems. While the number of potential hazards in a facility are infinite, there will likely be a few major areas that cause real problems for employees. Start in these areas before moving on to far fetched potential problems. I once had a maintenance worker injured installing a guard over something that had been exposed for twenty years and never caused an injury.
  6. Network with other safety professionals. You will gain knowledge beyond value by talking with others who are faced with the same problems you are. Find out what works and what does not work in safety networking meetings. You can join a local group of safety professionals as well as communicate with others safety directors within your company.
  7. Always be loyal to your company. Resist the temptation to whine and complain because your company will not give you all the resources that you ask for. Never reveal any potential hazards or violations outside your own company. If you have a problem with the way things are done, discuss it with your boss or seek another job. Don’t set yourself up to be the scapegoat when things go wrong.
  8. Accept the responsibility for the safety of the workers. Don’t be afraid to stop a machine or a job that is being preformed in an unsafe manner. If you have taken the time to get to know the workers and the jobs that they perform, you decision will be respected.
  9. Keep accurate records. Even if you think your safety numbers will look better if you don’t record certain data, you will never be able to make good decisions without good data.
  10. Get a mentor or a coach to guide you. Handling safety issues can be very stressful when things go wrong. You need someone you can trust to share ideas
    and concerns. A mentor or coach can also help you maintain focus on your own
    goals so that your work fits into living a satisfying and successful life. Your
    mentor or coach can also be a big help at salary review time to assist you in
    wording your list of accomplishments so that your employer understands how
    valuable you are to the company’s bottom line.

Arcade Style Games Showing Up On Social Networking Sites

With the growing popularity of social networking sites like My Space, people are looking all over the place for ideas to make their individual site stand out among all the thousands of others. One of the ways people are accomplishing this is by finding cool sites that will help you post fun things like MySpace games and other stuff that is fun and interesting on your page. Most of these are free games where you basically just copy a bit of code and paste it on your My Space page and voilla, you have a game ready to go.

Some of these are cooler than others, and the ones I like best are the ones that offer arcade games . I have always been a big fan of arcades and this is a cool way to get to play some of your favorite games without actually getting in your car and driving to the arcade. On top of that, you can share the games with your friends so they can play too, so they can play a free online game, and on many of these arcades you can actually save high scores, etc., so that you can see who is the resident champion at a given game and how you yourself stand up to the competition.

The concept of putting a free online game on a website to get people to spend time there is not a new one. It has been around on many a forum site for literally years, but what is new is that you can now actually put them on your individual page at almost any of the major popular social networking websites and share them that way. Also, some of these new arcades offer really cool ones, like this maffia game I’ve been playing. This is a different concept because it is more personal and enables a larger number of people to actually host their own web based arcade without being a skilled web developer.
