Expect a Miracle

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Esther Hicks, in her book ‘The Law of Attraction,’ the movie ‘The Secret,’ and the book ‘Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting,’ all prescribe a method for attracting goodness and prosperity into our lives - that of positive expectation.

Sue Dyer, a nationally known mediator in the U.S. , shows us how to do it. She says, “I have never failed to receive a miracle when I put out the intention. And I do it every day.” According to Sue, she puts out the intention for miracles every morning as she drives to her office. She intends that every person she meets, every event that happens - will lead her on the path that is intended for her in the universe. “I say, ‘Today I expect a miracle.’ Then I get excited! And I wait in positive expectation! When the phone rings, I say, ‘That’s it. I wonder who that will be!”

It all comes back to having underlying faith, says Sue. “I think to myself, ‘Let your will be done, not mine.’ That way we can let go and let God and the universe take us on a trip,” she says. In the back of her mind all day, she’s thinking that she must be meeting this new person for a reason and asks herself, “What is the message I’m suppose to receive or give?”

Despite being a hard core businesswoman, all of her work is aimed at creating more love. These are not things she shares with her client base, rather it’s the premise on which she works AND on which she let’s all her actions be guided. People often remark about something they see in Sue, and that’s the high degree of serenity and calm in which she works, despite the fact that her daily life consists of confrontation all around her. When Sue started, most of her clients were hard-hat construction supervisors who entered negotiation deadlocked, acting as if they wanted to kill each other, then came out two days later after working with Sue, patting each other on the back as best friends! Today she leads million dollar mediations between government and industry. In one incident they were arguing for four years, and with only a few days left with $700 Million at stake, they called Sue. She brought them to agreement as the clock ticked away, and the day was saved, plus the $700 Million.

In a taped interview, Sue shares with us all her daily routine for creating this calm and certainty in life:

3 SECOND FOCUS TIP – Start each day with “Today I expect a miracle.” Then be excited about it, like a kid at Christmas. You don’t know what will happen, but you know it will be good. Then as you go through the day, look for the reasons you might be meeting people. Raise your energy level as the phone rings and answer it with wonderment and positive expectation.

End each day like this: As you fall asleep, think of all the events of the day, the people you met, look for the goodness that came, the insights you had. When you look at your day from this perspective, you will see the miracles brought to you. The miracles will grow and grow daily as you take this focus.

Nothing is Who You Really Are

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

The true nature of who you really are is nothing at all. In the experience of being something, you move away from this state of nothingness.

It is not possible to experience being nothing for that realization is a state of being. In the world of the absolute or nothingness there is no being. Consciousness, is nothingness being something-”I am” this or that. Consciousness is a place in time, a focus of the nothing state wishing to experience something. As an individual of this nothingness you choose amongst all the possibilities of being. Your focus in the physical life moves from one experience to another and you can only experience one thing at a time. For example, you may be male, a father, employee, husband, lover and any number of things-but when the focus of you attention is on being a father-in that moment you experience nothing else. But that does not mean all the others things are not valid or do not exist-they do.

All things exist simultaneously in the same time and space-it is only your focus shifting back and forth from one to another that creates the illusion. From the state of nothing to the experience of being, is called consciousness. During any particular time of the day you move back and forth from one state to another. During the time of sleep the mind is active in another realm of experience or being-called dreaming.

Consciously you are running a script or playing a roll. You can never experience being nothing, because your mind believes it is something, so it is in the times of no-time that you are in your true state and no-time cannot be measured by the conscious mind.

It is within the experience of this satsang one can truly appreciate the experience of physical life as an altered state. Because we all come from nothing, we are therefore all connected to it and are really one consciousness experiencing individuality. In this awareness of “onemind,” there are no victims as all individuals cooperate to create a single circumstance or experience.

Even though one can never experience consciously the state of being nothing-when one imagines it, it is easy to see the wonder of being conscious and experiencing physical reality. In human terms it makes the experience easier, because all experiences are choices-realized.

In the state of nothingness, there are no choices because of course there is nothing to choose. It is only when one contemplates choices in the state of consciousness we can appreciate how miraculous it is. It is easy to see why consciousness itself is an addiction.

A new born knows itself as nothing and as it grows it is in constant wonder of its environment. Then as it becomes older and starts to forget what it is, it learns to become something. From its crib it can look at the window and imagine itself as the dog, the bird, the tree. Then gravity sets in and it learns what its parent’s images of it are.

The paradox is you are really nothing and everything at the same time-you choose what you wish to experience at some level of your consciousness. Because you are making it all up-there are no limits as to what you may experience. Your life goes on past consciousness and you will choose again. Know all the people you bring into your life in any moment, are different aspects of yourself-there to help you experience what you desire. You are nothing, experiencing something, from more than one perspective, separated, but not separate. In your state of being-be what you desire.

Being spiritual, enlightened and becoming aware have no relevance in the state of nothingness. They are simply scripts you are following during your conscious state. For instance-you are now playing the roll of an individual learning to become spiritual and it is what you are experiencing. You cannot be spiritual while you are learning to be so. Spirituality is a state of being. But, to your true state this program that is running has no meaning. In fact, what all these things do is push yourself away from your true state of nothingness. Being spiritual is not being nothing. All your belief systems about what happens when you leave the physical experience are meaningless and you are missing out on the true experience of physical life. You came to this world to experience being physical, and during your sojourn here you contemplate being nothing again.

It would be the same thing as having an evening out on the town. You have a really nice meal, attend a movie and during this outing you are thinking about work and planning things which have to be done at home-you missed the whole point of the evening out!

Thinking about the afterlife does not change your experience once you get there-in nothingness, there is no experience. The only physical benefit to this understanding is a realization of how exciting, compelling and intoxicating this life is.

Coming from a realm of nothing to physical experiences can be overwhelming for many. Some choose to return early while others can’t get enough. Some just dip their toes into the pool of life a few times while others plunge in.

Many of us practice spirituality, moving to enlightenment or raising ourselves up from physical life in order to avoid it. We want to be near but not involved-observers of life’s circumstances but not participants. For some it’s just business-the idea sells well. Spiritual awareness is just an appreciation of what you are already doing very well.

You are nothing experiencing something and that something is whatever you choose and it only has meaning to you. You come from a realm of no-choice to one of everything is a choice. You present life and its circumstances are testimony as to how you perceive it and the choices you have made. You are not a victim-you are a series of good and poor choices.

If you dream about nothing, you will get it. Whatever you constantly imagine-you will experience. This power you possess is absolute!

The hope for an afterlife cannot be realized until you become aware you will create it. You are creating it now, you are experiencing it now, and you will continue until you no longer wish to. And you will come back and do it again and again. You are both the creator and the created.

From the realm of nothing comes everything and everything is the only thing you can experience.

Zenaida Lorenzo: An Unlikely Successful Woman

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Zenaida Lorenzo

An interesting name, derived from Zenobia, Queen of the wealthy city of Palmyra in the Arabian Desert, and in Latin, a feminine form of “Zeus.” Indeed a powerful name, but quite appropriate for an incredibly self-driven woman, rather adequately described by the words “motivation” and “prosperity.” Zenaida was the #1 earner in her home business in 2005, though she didn’t start off with a silver spoon, didn’t have the best education, and generally had a rough time just living as she grew up.

Zenaida began life in an ethnic neighborhood, primarily Puerto Rican like Zenaida herself, in Dover, New Jersey. The family was so poor that there were a few times when she went hungry and had to wear the same clothes to school more than once. It didn’t seem to matter then, as many of the families in her school had similar problems. Poverty was a way of life.

“Welfare was much better then,” Zenaida remembers. But she can still recall coming home to a bare cupboard at times. School trips were out, because there was no money for them. There just wasn’t money for anything, and many times, not enough for food.

But when she was about seven years old, she moved with her single mother and four siblings (another child would be added later) to another neighborhood, which bordered the Anglo part of town. The most difficult part of that was that she would have to attend an all-Anglo school, a place where it would be extremely difficult for her to fit in. She went from a school where the student body was 70-80% minority to a school where 95% of the kids were Caucasian. In the early 1970s, this was about as different as night and day.

The school administrators had no experience with Hispanic children, for one thing, and to make matters worse, Zenaida was severely dyslexic, though nobody seemed to realize it. Her teachers told her mother, “There’s something wrong with Zenaida,” implying that the child was mentally challenged. The fact that her mother didn’t speak English and that there was no father in the house only compounded the issue.

Zenaida failed her first year in the new school, which was 2nd grade. She went on to repeat the pattern in third, fourth, and fifth grades, as well, without anyone understanding what Zenaida’s problem really was. The girl was not only alienated from her classmates because of race, but because she just had no way of getting help with her problems. Her mother just kept pushing her ahead because her mother just didn’t want her to fail. Zenaida’s mother was uneducated, and didn’t understand the consequences of her decision.

Yet, dyslexia wasn’t Zenaida’s only issue. She was also ADHD–she had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a condition that wasn’t even recognized during the time Zenaida was growing up. ADHD sends thoughts through the brain at rapid speed, likened often to a ping-pong ball game going on inside the person’s head. What ADHD meant for Zenaida was that she was easily distracted and easily bored. The hyperactivity only added to those issues, making it very difficult for her to remain still for any length of time.

At age 13, Zenaida was not just going to school; she was working and paying her mother rent. By the time she got to high school, she was working two jobs to help support the family.

But in high school, Zenaida began to flourish. Her artistic abilities came to light and she began to design her own clothing. She even won 2nd place in the school arts competition. Then, in her senior year, Zenaida wanted to work in the area where she had found her only success–fashion design, and she tried to get into college. Yet, her grades weren’t good enough to go to the schools of her choosing. She was functionally illiterate.

About that time, Zenaida left home for New York City, and she found a video tape of a very old book, one that inspired millions and continues to do so today–Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich.” Zenaida poured over the book, working very hard to comprehend its forceful tenets of focus and persistence in the face of resistance. And at 21, she went back to college.

Her first step was to run down to the local Barnes & Noble and pick up a 5th grade reader because she was intent upon getting a college degree. She started to realize how the words jumped around on the page before her, and it wasn’t until she shared her trouble with her friends that she learned that all along, her problem had been dyslexia. Zenaida persisted in her learning, until she taught herself to read.

At 25, she got a job working for a bankcard system in sales, and was the top earner two months in a row. Her self-esteem rose. In fact, it rose enough to secure a job with a newspaper. She lied on her application, and said that she had a degree in liberal arts from the University of Puerto Rico, where she had moved and lived for a short while.

And her boyfriend continued to help her. Unbeknownst to her employer, her boyfriend at the time, was writing all her sales correspondence, then her boss started doing it for her, too. By the time he had figured everything out, Zenaida was important in the company, and was making a great deal of money for them.

But that wasn’t the end of Zenaida’s career. She decided that she wanted to work for the world-renowned publisher Conde Nast, and asked her boyfriend to help her get a job with the company. Yet, he told her, “I can’t keep writing to your clients.” In fact, he told her she couldn’t get another job, until she learned to read and write.

So, she set to work. She was determined to learn to read, no matter what. First she bought two books about getting higher scores on the SAT–Princeton Review Word Smart, Volumes 1 and 2. Her friend and her boss taught her how to speak properly without the ghetto slang, and after work every night, Zenaida would take an index card and choose a word from each of the two Princeton books, beginning with the letter “A.” On the front of the card, she would spell the word, write its phonetic pronunciation, and on the back, its meaning.

Zenaida played games with the cards. She read an article from the New York Times each day, which took her about forty minutes. If she didn’t know a word that was included in the article, she would look it up in the dictionary and then, add an index card for it.

She got to the letter “P” before stopping her routine.

She was finally functionally literate by the time she was 29.

Zenaida bolstered her knowledge of history by going to the Museum of Modern Art every weekend. She bought audio-taped biographies of the artists, which as with all good biographies, drew in the history of that person’s time, the culture, the politics, and so on. She hung on every word.

And she prospered. Her achievements led her to making a commercial for then Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani for the local disabilities center. She also received a proclamation from Mayor Newman of Dover, New Jersey for teaching herself to read and for speaking to local high school students about dyslexia, using the theme “Anything is Possible.”

Zenaida also came to excel in business. She was making 6 figures a year, and at 34, decided to go back to college and to continue until she reached an MBA. When her company was sold in 2003, Zenaida was forced to take a 30% pay cut because there were no other jobs. Soon, she wasn’t meeting her obligations, and decided that there had to be a better way. She started a home business. In 2005, after less than one year with her home business company, Zenaida was their top earner, making close to $1 million in sales.

Though Zenaida is an incredible inspiration, and someone worthy of the people that follow her, she says, “When I was in my twenties, I was very angry. I would look at successful people and I always thought that if I could only read and if I only had an education, I could have the opportunity to be as successful as they are. Today I realize that the reason I am so successful is because of all the disadvantages and disabilities I had to overcome. They made me strong, persistent, and gave me the courage to look to alternative businesses. There are so many people who today, have every advantage, but they still work for others and earn a fraction of what is truly available. Today, I have total time and financial freedom. My goal is to empower others to see what is available to them, and to help them overcome their self-imposed limits.”

If you were to follow one person toward success in business or in life, Zenaida is certainly a woman to follow. She has helped many people to succeed at the same level she has succeeded herself. Today, she’s eager to help more people live the life of financial freedom and to make herself the best person she can be.

A Message In A Bottle

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

This sunrise is more brilliant than you have ever witnessed. The light it emits will fall on you, absorb you, and hold you in its radiance. You will become transformed, yet the same. Wisdom brings stillness of the soul, and genius to the spirit; there is clearness to your resolve and steadfastness within your being. Your senses are more keen, your mind more alert; your thoughts more focused. How wonderful this time of your life! Delight in it. This is your heavenly message. This is the beginning of your Ascension.

The transition from middle age to Deep Maturity can be your finest hour, or it can be full of dismal days. The choice is always yours; and yours alone. To reach the phase of Ascension, there is but one requirement; to know thyself. From this point, the process is natural; as water in a meandering stream.

True living involves our deepest moments of contemplation and reflection; therefore, this phase of your life can be one of wonder and fascination, or regret and remorse. Be kind to yourself, above all else, for your purpose is important. A grand mystery will unfold before you. Rejoice, my friend, for you will witness a world of change like no other. Welcome to the state of Wisdom! The gates of gold open wide for you!

Wisdom is the most precious quality that human beings can posses. As you enter this remarkable stage of your existence, you will suddenly feel more invigorated than you have in a longtime; for you stand on the threshold of noble causes.

All your past mistakes, the misjudgments, worry, strife, conflict, rivalry, jealousy and other vices will scatter from your psyche. Wisdom does not allow room for past regressions. While you might recall some errors from your youth and middle age, all negative memories will fade as you move into the years of Deep Maturity. You are not retreating into a sunset; you are facing a new dawn.

Your place within the world holds enormous importance. You and your compatriots will symbolize the “rising suns that gild the vernal morn” (Darwin). The Ascension completes itself when your Republic is restored.

Please enclose this message into the bottle and toss it back into the sea.

Speak Your Dreams Into Existence

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

The power of your words is one of the most powerful forces you can use to create what your heart desires.

I discovered the power of “Speaking my Dreams into Existence” in a playful manner.

At the tender age of forty I took my first art lesson and loved it.
I immediately began to say, “I am an artist…”
with a sense of playfulness.

I knew I wasn’t really an accomplished artist yet but it gave me so much pleasure to say it and it sounded so good.
Amazingly, within one year’s time, I was charging
over one thousand dollars a pop for my beautiful portrait work.

More recently one of my brothers jokingly teased me about taking time off. He called me one Monday morning while I was getting a pedicure instead of working.
He said, “Oh, so, Rebecca, you make so much in one day that you can just take the rest of the week off?”

And I replied, “Oh yes, that sounds so good to me…”
After that point, I started playfully repeating his own words to myself.

“You know, I make so much in one day, that I just take
the rest of the week off.” Lo and behold, if it didn’t come true in less than a months time.

I am am emotional healing workshop leader and
within a month my classes started filling up so full that I really did make so much from one day’s work that I could have taken it easy the rest of the week.

Please realize that I’m telling you this, not to make you feel left out, but to encourage you to do it, too.

That is my sole purpose for sharing anything with you.
So you can do it too and because you can do it too…

The vital key here is to keep it light and playful.
The energy of playfulness opens your valves to receiving.
When we take our dreams too seriously it can cause an energy of desperation which blocks your flow.

If you repeat affirmations with an air of desperation and complete seriousness you stifle the flow.

Everything is energy and you attract what you put out, so keep it light and fun while letting the universe know what would be fun for you.
Make it easy on yourself, play a game with this. What dreams would you like to come true?
Practice saying them in a joking manner and see how good that feels just to have the words roll off your tongue.

Have fun with your words and “Speak your dreams right into Existence”.

Wealth4U Wisdom Principle: Heaven Is At Hand Right Now!

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

The world’s most successful life coach Jesus the Christ, illustrates how the kingdom of heaven works in Matthew 25:14-30.

One day, the master of the land was going away into a far country and called his servants to give each talents, gifts, or money according to their ability to manage his businesses while he traveled.

Each employee was given as the master believed could effectively manage. The first servant being in high regard was given five talents. The servant proved he could handle the responsibility and had doubled his talents to ten. The second servant was charged with two talents and had doubled his. The third servant was given one talent, which he took and buried it. He trembled with fear that he may lose it and so he did nothing. That servant allowed fear to overtake his ability to create resulting in no return at all, not even interest.

Our life is a gift and our choices affect the quality of our life. When we take our precious gift of life that is full of promise and abundant blessings, the universe request of us is to make the absolute best of it. Have fun, be fruitful and multiple, create and expand, giving more than is given in return which, shows our appreciation and obedience. I believe that when we do this, we are operating and participating in the kingdom of heaven consciousness. In the parable, the servants who gained the most return applied faith principles, creativity, right action and made great decisions that allowed his increase. The servant that hid his talent allowed fear, anxiety and self-doubt to become his master, which resulted in forfeiting his one talent to the servant with the most. This story revealed that error thinking, fear-based decisions and laziness cuts off blessings of the kingdom. Are you operating with expectancy in the kingdom of heaven?

In verse 26, the unprofitable servant was called “wicked and lazy” by his returning master. Fear and disempowering thoughts talked the servant out of favor. The servant had taken the easy way out, and buried his gift in the ground. Think of the people he denied by his actions. He lost his raise, his job and the family dog.

For me, the most revealing part of this parable is that we create our reality or experience with the choices we make and our own self-talk. While each of us has the power of choice, we create our experiences by what we chose to give the most attention. How we exercise our faith, determines what we experience. Fear of anything causes more fear; the servants’ fear of loss produced more loss, and angered the boss.

Each of us has more talents than we could count, our duty is to create and further expand them. When we choose to believe that we are not worthy of the gift of life, or that we are not capable of expanding our talents, we are in essence telling God that he has made a mistake by giving us responsibility. To bury our uniqueness is short-circuiting our ability to harvest the kingdom of heaven’s mindset for an abundant and fulfilling life. The Kingdom of heaven is at hand for each of us today, give yourself permission to come out and play…

We Can Find Love

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Everyone needs love. We have read where babies were deprived of being held and loved, and we read where they died from the deprivation. Every one of us can find love, all we need is to know how to do it!

We have each been given this wonderful loving inner light within us; we were born with it, but many of our experiences have produced a dark covering so in many the light is barely visible any longer. We can change this! As we help someone in some way to feel good, to experience joy, maybe just by doing some little extra thing for them that was not expected, then we start breaking away the covering that is hiding our inner light. As the cloud of darkness begins to dissipate, our light will begin to shine and we will begin to experience tremendous joy as we move closer to the Great Mystery; to the Great Spirit whose love is always and everlasting.

Jesus taught us to love one another. As we share unconditional love with others, it will draw this love from others to ourselves. We will begin feeling loved by others. We will begin to feel the joy of giving; of allowing the flow of Living Waters to purify our hearts. It will appear miraculous as we begin walking in wonderful companionship with our heavenly Father.

Cherokee elder and wisdom keeper, John Red Hat Duke, taught us about the beautiful spiritual path of the Keetoowah, the Red Road. The seven steps of walking the Red Road are a powerful path leading to Creator by sharing unconditional loving service with others. It is the path Dottie believes will be the Red Force which will purify the Hopi people if they choose to walk this road. It will bring a wonderful sense of completeness and peace for all who journey this path. Walking the Red Road will prepare us to meet Messiah, and in the Christian sense, it will prepare us for the rapture. To ensure our entry into the next world by walking the Red Road, learn more about the grand adventure by reading Elder Red Hat’s teachings in the two books, Red Hat Speaks, and Red Hat’s Wisdom by Dorothy K. Daigle.

Walk in peace and joy, warm thoughts, Dottie

Dorothy was taught by Cherokee elder and wisdom keeper, John Red Hat Duke, for over ten years in the Keetoowah Cherokee spiritual ways, in Eastern philosophy, and in Judaism. She was raised Christian so she has a good working knowledge of Christianity. She no longer follows any religion but strives to walk the Red Road spiritual path according to the teachings of Jesus. She received her call from Creator in the fall of ‘92, and was then taught by the great prophet Elijah for four years. She was given four assurances by Creator when He called her. She was told that she was anointed by the Holy One of Israel, that she would be protected until this work was done, that Creator would go before her whenever He sent her somewhere, and that she did not have to prove herself to anyone. She is Creator’s witness. She carries wisdom of many years of living under Creator’s guidance and direction.

Financial Aid For The Non Traditional Student

SECURING FINANCIAL AID FOR THE NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENT

Troy Evans spent seven and one half years within the confines of a Federal Prison. Despite the obstacles that only prison can produce, Troy was determined that his time behind bars would not be wasted time. Education would be his saving grace. Unfortunately, his aspirations coincided with Federal Pell Grants be eliminated for the incarcerated. Undeterred, Troy set out to secure funding on his own through scholarships, grants and foundation assistance. After six months of filling out applications, writing essays, begging, pleading and selling, Troy landed his first scholarship for one class. That was a beginning, and when Troy walked out the doors of prison he carried with him two degrees, both obtained with a 4.0 GPA and designation on both the Dean’s and President’s list. Troy now wants to share with you some highlights in securing financial aid for the incarcerated

• Your first attempts should be through the School or University you have chosen to attend via correspondence. Most institutions will offer some type of scholarship program/package through an alumni association, a foundation or a sponsorship group. Some people may choose to research what is available in the form of financial aid at several different schools, making that the determinant in what school they will attend. This is first and foremost the quickest way to land a scholarship.

• Apply for federal and state aid. Although the incarcerated do not qualify for either, many scholarships which you will apply for in the future require that you first exhaust these two possibilities.

• Contact the Department of Commerce where you reside, as well as where the school is located. Get from them a listing of all Civic and Service clubs in their area (Kiwanis, Rotary Club, Lions, Elks, etc.) and contact these clubs individually. They often times sponsor scholarships, and more importantly they often earmark their scholarship money towards “hard luck” cases such as those incarcerated.

• Associations within your area. These can be brought up easily on any search engine, and the key here is to contact the Public Affairs Division and inquire as to what might be available for somebody in your situation. In particular target nonprofit, social work and any associations that are involved with the helping of others.

• Churches and religious organizations within your area. These organizations often have money earmarked for, again “hard luck” cases (homeless, disaster relief, etc.). Many times the church leaders have discretion on how this money can be distributed, and many times those incarcerated can fall under the umbrella of these funds.

• Private scholarships. This will be your bread and butter in the future. There are literally thousands of private scholarships out there. They are based on every imaginable criteria (the degree you are seeking, sex, race, hobbies, location, religious background, etc.). The list goes on and on. There are several good scholarship books that list every private scholarship and grant available nationwide. Peterson’s Scholarships, Grants and Prizes and Daniel J. Cassidy’s Scholarships, Grants and Loans are both excellent resources, and each offers scholarships ranging from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. In applying for these scholarships, apply for anything and everything that you even remotely qualify for. The association which funded nearly my entire academic career started with a scholarship that I didn’t even remotely qualify for, but they were so impressed with what I was trying to do that they decided to make an exception and give me a scholarship for one class. That one class led to nearly my entire academic career being funded while incarcerated.

• The Internet. Databases with thousands of public and private scholarships are available via the Internet. If you not have access to the Internet yourself, ask a family member or friend to do some research on it for you. The possibilities are limitless.

• Private and Public Foundations and Trusts. There are literally thousands of Foundations and Trusts out there that are required to give away a certain amount of money per year in order to keep their tax-exempt status. Many of these are geared towards education. Although securing these funds can often take months and even years, it is good practice to look into these early in your academic career, as they can provide a large chunk of assistance and allow you to go on to complete that second or even third degree. The one publication that I’m familiar with, Foundation Grants to Individuals is published by The Foundation Center, and is an excellent resource.

• Almost any scholarship you apply for is going to require that you write an essay as to why he you feel you’re deserving of this funding. This is the most important process in the securing of financial aid. Your application will be judged almost solely on what is written within this essay. It is important you stress how you are using education as a way to turn a very negative situation into as positive a situation as it can be. Let the committee know that private scholarships or whatever you are applying for is the only source of funding available to you. Let them know that state and federal aid is not available, and that you are now faced with the final avenue available for living your dream. It is very important to sell yourself as someone who is attempting to turn his or her life around. Also, make sure that this essay is in the correct format, with spelling and punctuation being perfect, and that it is presented in a professional manner combined with a heartfelt plea. Do these two things and you will get results.

• A’s are a must. Again, A’s are a must. This is particularly true in the beginning, for the first one or two courses. The reason that this is so important is that as you apply for scholarships at later dates you want to be able to send your transcripts, report cards, etc. along with your application and essay. This sets a track record in what you’ve done with scholarship money in the past. Show the committee members you are serious about turning your life around and serious about education. The importance of this is enormous. You must be able to show them that their money is going towards a worthy investment.

This is just a rough outline to get help you get started. I want to stress that there is money out there for everyone. There is absolutely no reason you cannot secure funding for your education while incarcerated. It is only a matter of beating the bushes. The money is there, but the effort has to be there to make it happen. If you’re serious about obtaining an education via correspondence while incarcerated, I’m here to tell you and I’m living proof it can happen; you only have to want it bad enough. I invite you to visit my web site www.troyevans.com and e-mail me with any questions or comments you may have. In the near future I will be publishing a book PAYING FOR COLLEGE: Financial Aid for the Non-Traditional Student. As completed it will be posted on my website. Good luck and go shake those bushes.

The Cave: Going Within, A Journey Of Self Discovery

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

The demands of life in today’s society place enormous pressure on all of us. Finding a moment away from the constant noise of traffic, advertisements, television and the urgency of every day concerns seems impossible. Friends and loved ones need us. There are bills to be paid, projects to finish. The babble is deafening! This myriad of distractions creates a cacophony of sensations which overload our receptors, desensitizing us to the voice of our creative being and Spirit.

Don’t beat yourself up if you find yourself in need of “Me” time or for feeling the need to withdraw from others into the seclusion of your own private cave. Going into the cave physically or metaphorically is an important and life affirming act. Symbolically, the cave represents isolation, contemplation and a gathering of resources needed to face future challenges. The silence of the cave affords us an opportunity to regain our center and to ground the overflow of stresses which otherwise lead to anxiety and depression.

Knowing yourself and listening deeply to the promptings of your inner voice is essential to making healthy life choices.
When we fail to honor time spent alone, secluded from outside influences and demands, our spirit suffers. Desensitized and disconnected, the choices we make are not genuine to our soul expression and the sublimated urgings of our authentic self will manifest in unhealthy attitudes, behaviors and as illnesses. We become destructive, lashing out at the forces which bind us. Anger turns inward where it becomes self loathing. We find ourselves sabotaging relationships. Our desires go unfulfilled.

Time spent in silence and contemplation may at first seem uncomfortable and challenging but the experience is healing. By turning inward and seeking the solace of isolation, energies spent in fruitless action pool internally, coalescing, focusing to recharge our mental, physical and spiritual batteries. Listening to and questioning that part of ourself which remains hidden behind a social mask, will reconnect us with hopes and dreams we’ve buried, freeing us to gather resources, hone talents and prepare to face the rigors and challenges ahead. Often answers found within the cave reveal hidden and unexpected jewels of creativity or personal insight, opening the door to authentic self expression and deeper relationships.

Going into the cave requires more than shutting out the intrusive demands of others, it asks that you remove yourself from the flood of outside information bombarding you. Try turning off the TV and radio. Resist popping in a DVD and “vegging” out with a bowl of popcorn. Put down the novel and separate yourself for a time from the voices of other people’s creativity. Make a journal entry. Spill you guts onto the page. Paint a picture. Use your child’s muddy finger paints. Go for a walk in the woods or sit on the porch and simply watch the world move around you. Listen to the thoughts inside your head as an observer, without criticism. Take time to be alone with yourself as a friend.

Marvelous things happen in the cave. Spirit speaks to us, lessons are absorbed or learned. Hibernation, germination and reflection are essential to growth and connection with the divine. The cave is your cocoon and in it your infant self develops adult organs, undergoing complete metamorphosis.
Take time to know yourself and to transform.
Free yourself to embrace this stage of your development.
Enter the cave with trust and at peace, knowing that you will emerge from it renewed and inspired.

Let’s begin 1. What would you be, do and have if you knew you could not fail? 2. What would it feel like to live your life on your terms, and what would those terms be? 3. What is important to you? 4. What are you thankful for? 5. What do you do for fun and to relax? 6. Who are your mentors? 7. What knowledge do you have that others seek? 8. What kind of goals do you have, and why? 9. What have you already achieved? 10. What is the perfect career/business you have created for yourself?
