Creativity Management: The Value of Time Pressure

Friday, October 12th, 2007

FORWARD

I recently gave a presentation at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design on a topic entitled “Is creativity management an oxymoron?”

The essential confusion to people resistant to the idea of “creativity management” was the word “management.” Replace it with the word “optimization” and the resistance disappears; all we’re really trying to do is optimize the quality of the idea pool and optimize the implementation process.

Then you can suggest that most people already implicitly accept the idea of creativity management: if you ask them to solve a problem or engage in a particular endeavour, one of the things they’re likely to do is herd people into a room with a flip chart and conduct some sort of brainstorming session and implicit in that action is the acceptance that certain methods, processes and procedures enhance creative output.

Then you can begin discussing how to improve the enormous amount of creative output people generate, from problem solving in everyday business life right up to the level or art.

***

CREATIVITY AND TIME PRESSURE

There is a pervasive belief that time pressure stimulates creativity. This is both true and false.

There are a number of forces at work:

a) Time pressure increases creative output. By forcing idea production, setting goals and incremental deadlines, a greater number of ideas are produced than if a “do your best” approach is taken. If a leader asks particpants in an idea generating session to address a problem and think of at least 5 ideas every half an hour, then 80 ideas are produced by one individual and 1600 are produced by 20 individuals at the end of an average working day. This level of output is conscious and would not be produced normally.

b) Time pressure encourages prolific production and therefore the probability of generating good ideas increases. It can be said with great confidence that quality of output is closely related to quantity. The best single creative product tends to appear at that point in the career when the creator is being most prolific.

c) Forcing output pushes individuals along the experience curve, refines their methodology, builds competencies and knowledge and improves performance. Screenwriters know that they are likely to produce more, better quality work faster if they set themselves a schedule of a certain number of pages per day.

d) Motivation is critical to creativity. If a person is intrinsically motivated, time pressure may be a synergistic extrinsic motivator. If the person is not intrinsically motivated then it may turn out to be a non-synergistic extrinsic motivator, which reduces the level of engagement in the endeavour.

e) Short term time pressure may be bad in that it does not allow the mind to engage in the endeavour at various cognitive levels. It does not allow rich ideas to formulate through the process of incubation. Intrinsically motivated individuals will benefit from short term time pressure and goals (sets cognitive forces in motion) and will generate richer ideas through incubation over the longer term.

Least Cost Routing Considerations For Toll Free Numbers

Friday, October 12th, 2007

With constant and growing cost pressures on their business, Toll Free providers can no longer rely on slow, manual, ad hoc techniques to analyze and deploy least cost call routing.

Many Toll Free service providers sign agreements with multiple carriers to carry call traffic on that carriers’ network for Toll Free Numbers in areas where the provider has no service or can find a better rate than using their own network. In order to take advantage of such agreements, your company must generate Call Processing Records (CPRs) for your Toll Free numbers that use a specific set of carriers based on where the call originated. The initial CPR that must be created may seem obvious or trivial (use the lowest cost provider for each NPA-NXX), but SMS/800™ restrictions on the size and number of paths in a CPR often prevents the simple choice and requires a more complex routing record.

Inefficiencies in implementing least cost routing translations and CPR updates can cause providers to unnecessarily sacrifice time, money, network performance, and business opportunities by:

  • Unsuccessfully implementing new call routing in response to rate changes
  • Failing to take advantage of price disparities or to apply discounts
  • Losing focus on the cost reduction opportunities while implementing “home-grown” IT solutions for Least Cost Routing (screen-scraping, spreadsheets, etc.)

A successful Toll Free Least Cost Routing Tool:

  • Produces CPRs with a number of paths and a size that will be accepted by SMS/800™ and can be loaded successfully in their Service Control Points;
  • Chooses between multiple carriers for any NPA-NXX;
  • Allows you to merge traffic data across multiple toll free numbers to generate a single least cost routing CPR for that set of number

Once the analysis is done and the LCR CPR generated, many benefits exist:

  • Agreements with carriers can be renegotiated for example, to provide a volume discount based on the call volume that will be sent to that carrier
  • “What-if” scenarios can be done to determine which carrier negotiations would minimize costs
  • LCR CPRs could be quickly regenerated as traffic changes on a toll free number.

Successfully implementing Toll Free Least Cost routing can be very challenging. Manual, ad-hoc solutions are not the correct answer. Automation is required! The benefits of successful automation efforts will definitely impact your bottom line!

Matthew J. Noreen PMP® works for csf Corporation supporting and promoting their flagship 8MS® product. 8MS was designed from the ground up by a team of former Bell Labs engineers to be a superior toll free provisioning system that eliminates traditional dependence on SMS/800.

csf Corporation has built a powerful Least Cost Routing CPR Generation engine that uses your providers’ rate agreements and traffic data to produce a CPR that will minimize your Toll Free calling costs.

Natural Colon Cleansing

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

There are many different ways that someone can accomplish a thorough and all natural colon cleansing. Some of these involve uncomfortable procedures or expensive equipment. However, there are other methods and options that you can pursue instead of the regular ones. Learn about the process of natural colon cleansing, and see if it is something that you would like to look into further.

To understand what natural colon cleansing is, you first must understand what unnatural processes there are. The most popular is when the patient has his colon drained by injecting large amounts of water and allowing it to exit. It carries large amounts of waste with it. There are also people who decide to undergo oxygen treatment, which causes all of the waste to be broken down by the chemicals which are used.

So why would you want to stick with natural colon cleansing instead of some of these other more popular and widely proven methods? Firstly, the other ones are slightly more intrusive and possibly damaging to the colon. When you pump it full of water you don’t necessarily exceed the capacity of the colon, but it is likely that you could sustain some negative effects.

With natural colon cleansing methods, you will do completely normal things to your colon. But in this case, you will adjust them slightly in order to perform the colon cleansing that you want. You will not be doing anything to your body that you wouldn’t usually do. The key is to figure out your own body in order to maximize the effort and get the cleanest colon possible.

The exact route that someone would take depends entirely on what they are trying to accomplish. If you have a serious problem with constipation, you will take a different approach when figuring out your natural colon cleansing diet. The same goes if you are trying to cure diarrhea. You will have to look for colon cleansing recipes that are very specific for your objectives.

The first way to do natural colon cleansing is to adjust your diet. If you can successfully alter the amount of fiber that you take in, your bowels will see a change as well. You can find numerous recipes that are designed to either cleanse your bowels completely, or make long-term changes to strive for a healthier colon. You can find these recipes on the internet or in special cookbooks.

It is also very popular to use herbal supplements that you can buy on the internet for a specific objective. The directions will be very specific, and probably require you to take the pills several times a day. As long as you stick with the pill regimen, your problems will be cured in no time. You will simply have to choose the natural colon cleansing treatment that is right for you, and stick with it.

Anxiety Motivation

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

What happens when you feel like you are spinning out of control?

For 2 months I have not been able to keep up the motivation I had to keep on my weight loss program and do my techniques to end anxiety.

I think about what needs to be done and I have all the good intentions but nothing is coming of it all.

I had a talk with myself this morning and realized I have not been listening to my own inner voice.

I discovered why this was happening after I had been doing all the best things for myself.

The information has been all around me and I have been blocking it out.

My mind has not been open for some reason and I had the feeling I was slipping back into the patterns of nearly 3 years ago when I was 66pounds heavier and not motivated and living with isolation and depression.

To have to look at myself under the microscope and admit that somewhere along the way everyone and everything else was getting my attention and I had forgotten about myself.

I even started getting chest pain and had to use the nitro spray to get the pain to subside.

I was working myself up into a frenzy because I was disappointed in the weight I was gaining, the food I was not properly eating and the negative attitude I was developing.

I looked at the programs and the techniques I had been using and felt sad because it all seemed to be slipping away in a big hurry.

It was as if once the backward slide began it took on a momentum go its own and felt like an avalanche of all my work getting buried beneath a pile of overwhelming sadness and let us face it, laziness.

It is easy to claim a loss of motivation but I had to go deeper than that.

Once I had let other people, problems and events take over my life again I could not get back to my own needs.

It was a case of slipping back into my old self and the comfortable place where I did not have to work hard at improving my life.

I got to look at all the information I had laying around about my previous heart attack and all the things I was supposed to be doing.

For example, exercising, eating the best foods and portions as well as working on the stress elimination process.

The stress part is in my mind the most important because if I can manage that the rest will follow.

I did not know how fast and easily the old habits could return if I forgot about myself.

Let me say that today I did not over eat and I exercised.

I also listened to the music I enjoy and now am feeling the stress begin to lessen.

I also visualized the way I was succeeding and feeling before I lost the motivation and I am getting back on track.

I do not want to be overweight again this summer.

This is a motivator for me as I worked so hard to get those pounds off and at the time I made a promise to myself that this would be the last time I was ever going to be heavy.

It was important to my self-esteem how I was looking and it had benefits to my heart as well.

I say all this to let you know we are human and along with our failings come knowledge and the self-power to change.

I needed to open up my mind to what was really bothering me in order to return to my quest to lead an anxiety free life.

Wedding Favors - Buying & Making Your Own

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

So everything had been booked and invitations sent, now is the time to sit back and have a bit of fun. Wedding Favors are great fun to make yourself especially if you are a little bit arty and like making things yourself.

Wedding favors date back may years and are a small gift given by the bride and groom to their guests as a token of appreciation on this their special day. Traditionally the Wedding Favor consisted of 5 almonds usually given in a small trinket box to signify (Wealth Health Happiness Longevity and Fertility)

Nowadays there is no set way of what you do for the wedding favor anything goes. However before you get carried away remember that the wedding favor is usually placed on the table where each person is sitting, so we do not want anything to large. So first you need to decide on whether you are going to make them yourself or buy them ready made.

If you have chosen ready made wedding favors then any good wedding shop will have a vast array of choice, so book yourself a day out with some friends and trawl the shops I am sure you will find what you are looking for.

If you are going to make the wedding favors yourself then you need to sit down and decide what you are going to make, this can be great fun and your choice is endless, will it be trinket boxes with the traditional almonds or maybe a piece of wedding cake, or even a small present of some type.

The wedding Favors do not have to be edible they could be something that can be kept by your guests for years to come. Pink ones for girls blue ones for boys maybe, remember that they are part of the table decoration so want to be in keeping with whatever else you are having on the table. There are also some lovely materials out there so maybe you could make little cloth bags that can be decorated with ribbons and flowers as these would look lovely as part of the table decorations and maybe a little easier to make that the trinket boxes.

Remember you do not want anything to difficult as you may have a hundred or more to make. Also do not leave it to late to decide on your wedding favors as you do not want to be rushed at the last minute as making them will become a chore. Decide on your wedding favors and but all the necessary equipment and then you can make a few each evening, believe me it very therapeutic.

Things To Remember When Buying Your Wedding Cake

Friday, October 5th, 2007

One of the most thought about aspects of any wedding is the wedding cake. Every bride wants their wedding cake to be the focal point of the wedding reception table and something that guests will admire and talk about even after the wedding day.

With so many designs and styles available plus the added option to customize and accessorize your wedding cake to suit your wedding theme the options are truly endless.

Before you embark on enrolling someone with the job of creating your wedding cake it is worth making preliminary decisions before hand. Having an idea of what your budget is and what sort of cake you have in mind could save you a considerable amount of time. Do you know what filling the cake will have? Sponge or fruit cake? Do you want a tiered cake? If so how may tiers do you want for your wedding cake?. Having a few of these details already decided will help both you and the caterer you decide to employ.

Although it is a good idea to have ideas in mind, stay open to suggestions from the professionals, they may suggest something you may never have considered and that something could turn out to be your perfect wedding cake.

When you are ready to see the cake decorator or caterer (most should see you for a consultation free of charge) ask to see photos of their designs and do not be afraid to ask for something different or mix two styles together, most caterers should be happy to oblige.

Most wedding cakes are decorated with white icing but if your theme is pink or a different colour there is no reason why the icing on your wedding cake should not match it.

Once you have chosen the filling for your wedding cake you then need to start thinking about a topper, the days of the imitation plastic bride and groom are long gone! Nowadays these cake toppers can be custom made and created to look exactly like the bride and groom, even down to the brides dress!.

Most wedding cake designers will need all decisions made and finalised three to six months before the event. I would strongly recommend having the wedding cake ordered six months in advance to allow for any changes that may need to be make and piece of mind for you.

You will need to budget well for your wedding cake, remember the cost of the cake is normally separate to the decorator’s fee, it is also wise to ask if there is any charge for having the wedding cake delivered so every outlay will be covered in your budget.

What ever design or style you choose the wedding cake plays such an important role in the wedding day, having the perfect wedding cake to slice with your partner will make the day extra special.

After the wedding cake has been cut and enjoyed by the guests remember to keep your wedding cake topper safe, this keepsake will always remind you of your perfect day, and who knows, it could be passed down to your children to use on their special day.

How To Spot Anxiety Problems

Friday, October 5th, 2007

At one point or another, nearly 1 out of every 60 people suffer from anxiety. Although it is not always properly identified, it is important to have a full understanding of the variety of causes of anxiety, as well as how they are identified.

In today’s society, there are many things that can cause anxiety. Anxiety is more prevalent today due to things like financial and work matters and the instability of the world we live in.

Financial problems are one of the most common causes of anxiety. With easy access to credit cards, people often find themselves buried in debt. For many, this type of debt can be very serious and can cause severe anxiety and stress problems.

Relationships, whether they are work related or personal, are also very common causes of anxiety. With the divorce rate being higher than ever, more and more people find themselves dealing with anxiety. Both the breakdown of the marriage and the aftermath, contribute to higher anxiety levels.

Another common trigger of anxiety is work. Many employees find they do not have job security and work in a volatile environment. Today’s companies are trying to perform more tasks, with fewer employees. Therefore, employees find they have a heavier workload, thereby causing more anxiety and stress.

Some common anxiety symptoms are:

- Little or no sex drive
- Unable to concentrate
- Little or no appetite
- Overall restlessness
- Feeling like you are being judged or watched
- Withdrawing from social settings
- Muscle tension and stress

These are just a few of the more common anxiety symptoms. However, if anxiety is left untreated, more several symptoms can occur. Therefore, the earlier you get help for your anxiety, the easier it is to deal with it. If left untreated, emotional and physical illnesses can occur.

If you believe you have anxiety, be sure to speak with you doctor. He can then properly diagnose you and determine the best and most effective course of action for you.

Goblins in Thongs: The 5 Rules of Creativity Explained

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Creativity has a “Mysterious Force” connotation. It is often thought of as something that only genius artists possess. And while it is true there is a bit of mysterious force about creativity it is something that everyone possesses. Understanding the 5 rules of creativity will help you to develop and grow your creative potential.

Rule1: “The rule of Fusion” This is where the title of this article becomes clear. Addition is the rule of adding two things together. This is a fundamental skill of creativity. Taking one thing and adding it to another to come up with a totally new thing, idea, concept, or thought. Often times these additions might at first seem extremely incongruous but it is through these incongruities that the most creative ideas emerge. Aren’t we all so glad that somebody used this rule on peanut butter and chocolate? Don’t dismiss even the craziest addition. It may lead to other, better, ideas. Which is what the second rule of creativity is about.

Rule 2: “The logical progression” Every single thing came from an earlier thing. No thought, idea, product, story, painting ever was brought into existence from nothing. It derived from something earlier. This brings up an interesting bit of trivia about Picasso. A Woman, meeting him in a restaurant asked him to draw something for her and she said that she would pay him anything. He quickly drew out a sketch on a napkin and said “That will be six thousand dollars please.” She was shocked at this and retorted: “But it only took you five minutes to draw it!” To which he replied: “No Madame, it took me forty years and five minutes to draw it!” Picasso was proving the point that he didn’t just draw it out of nothing. He drew it out of the progression of artistic ability and skill he developed over 40 years of learning. Think about something and then try to peek back into where it originated from then try to extrapolate this into what could be next for it. You will be surprised where this takes you.

Rule 3: “The rule of scattershot” Edison is famous for his quote that inventing is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. What he meant was that you have to just try a whole bunch of things, no matter how crazy it might seem because sooner or later something special will come out of it. The trick here is to be observant enough to know what is working. This is a famous technique used in Brainstorming where you just come up with as many things as possible regardless of their initial apparent relevance or worth. It does lubricate creativity and generate lots of good stuff.

Rule 4: “The rule of discipline” While creativity has the bad reputation of being something for dreamy types who lounge under a tree waiting for an apple to fall it is just not true. Creativity follows the “opportunity comes to the prepared” rule in that if you want to be creative you have to do and learn. From this you will grow in your creativity. If you want to be a more creative painter you have to paint - a lot. Through this practice your mind will generate creative thoughts. The same is true for any pursuit. The more you do it the more prepared you will be to receive creative inspiration and more importantly the more prepared you will be to realize them.

Rule 5: “Transferance” Every invention, thought, idea, product, or other thing was created for a purpose but every one of these things can be applied in other ways. A hammer is much more than just a tool for pounding nails. If you are working on a creative problem look at other similar or even dissimilar solutions to problems and see how you can apply these solutions to your problem. This brings us right back to the goblins. Some goblin saw the success of thongs on human beaches and thought “maybe this will work on goblin beaches.”

It is true that creativity is a bit of a mystery but these five rules help you to understand what creativity really is and how you can harness it and develop your creativity to a fuller potential.

Cleaning Tips For Your Kitchen

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

- To rid the yellowing from white appliances: Mix together 1/2 cup bleach, 1/4 cup baking soda and 4 cups of warm water. Apply with a sponge and let set for 10-15 minutes. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

- To clean a greasy blender: Fill with a little hot water and add a drop of detergent. Cover and turn it on for a few seconds. Rinse and drain dry.

- To rid cutting boards of onion, garlic or fish smell, cut a lime in two and rub the surface of the board. You can also apply a paste of baking soda and water and rinse.

- To clean copper and brassware, dip lemon halves in salt and rub. A solution of vinegar and salt sprayed liberally will also do the trick.

- For a fast and thorough clean-up of the grater, use a toothbrush to brush lemon rind, cheese, onion or whatever out of the grater before washing it.

- Before washing a meat grinder, run a slice of bread through it.

- To open a clogged drain: either use a couple of denture tablets, or pour a cup of salt and a cup of baking soda into the drain followed by a kettle of boiling water. The grease will usually dissolve and open the drain.

- Following a spill in an oven or on a stove, sprinkle with salt immediately. When oven is cool brush off burnt food and wipe with a damp sponge or cloth.

- Burners of gas stoves can be cleaned by soaking them in a solution of warm water mixed with ammonia. Use a wire brush to clean the burner holes. Rinse and dry.

- Coffee or tea stains from plastic cups can be scoured out by rubbing with baking soda. Rinse and dry.

- To rid plastic containers of foul smell, place crumpled newspaper (black and white only) into it.

- Cover tightly and leave overnight. Wash and dry in the normal way.

- To prevent mildew from forming in a refrigerator, wipe with a cloth dipped in vinegar. The acid effectively kills the mildew fungus.

- After the freezer has been defrosted, coat the inside with glycerine. The next time you defrost, the ice will loosen quickly and drop off in sheets.

- To help eliminate odours in the refrigerator, fill a small bowl with charcoal and place it on a shelf in the fridge. It absorbs odours rapidly. An open box of baking soda will also absorb odours from the refrigerator for at least a month or two.

- For a sparkling white kitchen sink, place paper towels across the bottom of your sink and saturate with household bleach. Leave for an hour or so. Scrub and rinse.

- Spots on stainless steel sinks can be removed with methylated spirit or with white vinegar. Club soda can also shine up your sink in minutes.

- To renew and freshen a cleaning sponge, soak overnight in salt or baking soda water. Wash out in the morning.

- To remove lime deposits from a tea kettle, fill with equal parts of vinegar and water. Bring to a boil and allow to stand overnight.

- To keep a thermos flask free of foul odours while storing, wash with warm soapy water. Rinse and dry well in the sun if possible. Place a tablespoon of sugar granules in it and store.

- To remove rust from tin pie pans, dip a raw potato in cleaning powder and scrub.

- To eliminate strong or pungent odours from a microwave, heat four tablespoons of vanilla for a minute in the microwave and leave overnight.

- To remove the smell of burnt food from a pan, simmer a few slices of lemon in water in it.

- If a cup of coffee is placed in the refrigerator, it helps in keeping the fridge smelling fresh.

- To avoid strong smells of fish, garlic etc from filling up your home, place white vinegar in a small bowl next to the stove while cooking.

- To clean and freshen dusty artificial flowers, put them in a paper bag with a handful of salt and shake well. The flowers will look as good as new.

Raising Children With High Functioning Autism

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

If your child has been diagnosed with high functioning autism, parenting can be a challenge. The main reason is because autistics do not think and mentally develop the same way as the average child, and so must be taught individually and differently. Therefore, the challenge is finding out what parenting methods work for your autistic child. Essentially, it’s a lot of trial and error.

Raising a child with high functioning autism can be made easier by providing children with the necessary therapy they require. However, aside from therapy, the following are 5 basic parenting tips that may prove helpful along the way:

Tip 1 - Create Schedules – Most autistics, including those with high functioning autism, resist change and insist on routine. Creating schedules helps autistic children to better comprehend situations and learn. You need to provide your child with a daily schedule that shows him/her the order of activities they will experience. If your child has difficulty reading, create a picture schedule.

Furthermore, telling a child in advance that an activity is about to change, helps to create an easier transition for them. For instance, tell your child “In 5 minutes, we’re going to stop coloring and read a story”.

Tip 2 - Create understanding – Make sure your child understands what you want him/her to do. Ensure that the task you are asking is achievable and you understand the specific way in which your child learns and reacts to information told to him/her.

For instance, you should refrain from using figures of speech as part of instruction. A figure of speech is when you use an expression that has a non-literal meaning (IE. metaphors, similes, etc.) This form of language will be lost on an autistic. Thus, a better choice would be to use a visual aid such as a picture or a demonstration, to clarify the task.

Tip 3 – Create a personalized behavior plan – You can’t rely on the parenting methods that work for parents with regular children, or even those who have a child with high functioning autism. You need to create a program that is specifically oriented around the interests and needs of your child. This means analyzing your child’s behavior and creating a personal program based on his/her behavioral patterns. This is how you will eventually get your child to learn, respond and interact with others.

Tip 4 – Focus on improvement – Instead of trying to explain to your child what you don’t like when they do something you deem inappropriate or unproductive, focus on improving their behavior. If you want to improve on past behaviors, teach new “acceptable” ones to replace the old.

Teaching new behavioral skills will take plenty of time, patience and practice, but eventually the new acceptable behaviors will replace those you don’t approve of.

Tip 5 – Sensitivity alert! – Make sure you are aware of the triggers that will upset your child, so you can do your best to ensure they are avoided. Some issues that tend to upset those with high functioning autism include, but are not limited to:

• Sudden loud sounds (IE. alarms)
• Unusual smells in a particular room
• Discomfort when touched
• Being bumped

Although you can’t ensure your child will always be safe from sensitive issues, by knowing what they are helps you to have more control. Like any child, the less stress your autistic child has, the more productive they will be.

Remember, as a parent of a child with high functioning autism, you need to learn how to go with the flow, be creative, patient - and above all – maintain a positive attitude.
