Drums - The Importance of the Drummer

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Because of the fact that the drummer is the backbone of most
bands other musicians rely very heavily on him or her to
provide a strong beat that will keep a song together. A
drummer who is off beat, or off tempo, will lead the entire
band astray. Therefore, if the drummer is weak the whole
band will be weak.

Since the drummer provides the foundation for the other
musicians to follow, the drummer is the anchor of the band.
Being the anchor of the band, the drummer must have
confidence.

Confidence is what makes a good drummer a great drummer.
When you have confidence in your ability to play and
confidence in your instrument, success for the band is much
more likely to occur.

If you are a drummer in a band, then you are the anchor of
the band. The other musicians are relying heavily on you to
provide a strong beat that will keep everything together.
Other musicians may be able to cover their flaws when
playing their instruments as a group, but not you.
Everything you do behind your set will not only be heard,
but felt. There is simply no way to hide or cover up poor
drumming skills!

The drummer is vital to a band, and a great drummer can make
up somewhat for other musicians who may not be at the same
level of expertise. The reason is because your listeners
will notice more of what is in your band\’s music than what
is NOT in it.

For instance, let\’s say your guitarist is not real creative.
He may play well enough to keep up with the pace of the
song, but as far as adding anything flashy, he\’s just not
able at his current skill level. But, there you are, with
your solid sense of rhythm and timing. That\’s what people
are going to notice! They simply will not notice something
that the guitarist does NOT do.

People who are not musically inclined just want to be moved
by the music. They do not evaluate it like musicians do.
Now, if the guitarist seriously flubs something up, then
that\’s a different story all together. Not being creative
and not adding to the music is one thing, but making
critical mistakes is another. Musician, or not, people know
what is, or is not, pleasing to the ear.

So, as a drummer, the anchor of the band, be solid, strong
and confident. Continue to practice regularly and never be
satisfied with your level of progress.

Buying Vintage Acoustic Guitars - Learn to Look for Problems!

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Most of us don\’t “go looking for problems,” but if you are
considering buying a vintage acoustic guitar, it is best to
recognize any problems or potential problems BEFORE the purchase. In my article, “Acoustic Guitars–Why Buy Vintage?” I noted some good reasons to buy
vintage guitars (guitars that were made between the mid-1920\’s and
about 1970). Now let\’s consider how to buy such guitars WISELY.

In the previously mentioned article, I noted that there are two kinds of vintage
instrument buyers: the collector and the player. The collector of
vintage guitars, like the collector of anything, is looking for
examples from specific time periods–examples that are as pristine
as possible with original everything: original finish, bindings,
inlay, tuners, fretboard, frets, bridge, bridgepins, etc.–all with
the original case if possible. The player of vintage guitars is not
so concerned with whether everything is original, but seeks vintage
guitars because of the SOUND. Through the aging of the wood and the
vibrations over many years of playing, the sound of a vintage
acoustic guitar opens up into something quite wonderful. There are
some players who are also collectors. They are concerned with
issues of both playability and collectability. This article is
written from the viewpoint of the player, not the collector. The
problems discussed will not be about problems with cosmetic
appearance, or about whether or not parts are original, but rather,
things that may affect the structure and stability, and therefore
the playability of the instrument.

This brings us to our first consideration. If you\’re sizing up an
old guitar with the intention of possibly buying it, one of the
first things you might notice is that there are fine cracks in the
finish, running in all different directions. Are these finish
cracks problematic to the playability or sound of the guitar? The
answer is no. This is called “checking,” something quite common to
vintage guitars. Checking is the result of the temperature and
humidity changes the instrument has been through. This affects the
appearance only and even collectors put up with these cracks. I am
actually quite fond of them myself. These little cracks say, “Look!
Vintage!” And here is some good advice for anyone who owns a
vintage guitar: Never refinish a guitar that still has the original
finish, even if it heavily checked and all scratched and dinged up,
to boot. Stripping and refinishing a guitar not only lessens its
value, but also its uniqueness. The only conditions under which an
old guitar should be refinished would be if the instrument has been
damaged very severely or if it has already been refinished poorly.

Cracks that are actually in the wood are another matter entirely.
Any separation in the wood of the top, back, or sides of the
instrument should be taken seriously as they might cause the
instrument to be unstable. Such separations might not be visible
under normal conditions. In a dark room, put a flashlight inside
the guitar and inspect the entire outside of the instrument.

This would be a good time to mention that buying an instrument
online is not a good idea unless you are prepared for the worse
case scenario. The previously mentioned cracks, as well as braces
that are broken or coming apart, are all things that may not be
mentioned in the description by the seller. It is not necessarily
that seller is deceitful. Sellers often have no idea that there are
problems with the instruments they are selling.

One of the most common features of a vintage acoustic guitar is a
“bellying” of the top. Over the years, the tension of the strings
will pull on top and cause it to raise, forming a slight bulge on
which the bridge is the highest point. If the action of the guitar
is satisfactory, there may be nothing to worry about. However, if
the bridge has been shaved, or if the saddle has been drastically
shortened to get the action where it needs to be there may be
problems with playing and with intonation. When it comes out of the
factory, the bridge on a steel-string acoustic guitar is usually
about 1/4 to 5/16 of an inch high, with the saddle protruding about
an eighth of an inch above the saddle. If the action can be made
satisfactory without deviating too far from these specs, everything
should be fine. If not, a neck reset may be required–a very
expensive procedure. Also, you\’ll want to make sure the bridge is
not separated from the top. See if you can slide a thin, but stiff
piece of paper under the bridge at any place. If you can, the
bridge is probably in the process of lifting and may need to be
re-glued.

If there is no reinforcing truss rod in the neck, bowing of the
neck is common. This can sometimes be alleviated by having the
fretboard leveled and re-fretted. Or, you may have to have the neck
steamed and clamped to re-straighten–and the problem will probably
reappear unless you have a truss rod installed.

So, these are some of the things to look for when considering
purchasing a vintage acoustic guitar. These problems should not
necessarily discourage you from buying the instrument–you just
want to make sure you can recognize the problems and potential
problems and factor them into your decision. I\’ve purchased some
vintage instruments that have had to drastically overhauled, yet
the end results have been quite pleasing. All in all, vintage
acoustic guitars provide a rewarding experience to the guitar
player.

The Benefit of Teaching Others to Play Drums

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

If you have been playing drums for any length of time at
all, then you can teach someone else what you know.
You might say, “Yeah, but I don\’t know enough, or play well
enough to teach.” You know more than someone who\’s never
picked up a pair of drumsticks!

You never want to pass up an opportunity to teach someone
else how to play drums, or even show them a cool groove or
fill. Not only will you be robbing them, but you will also
be robbing yourself.

“How so?” you may ask.

When you begin teaching someone some of your drumming
knowledge and skills, even if you think it\’s not much, you
will be amazed at the additional things you will learn. You
will also begin to realize you knew more than you thought
you knew about the drums, which will improve your
confidence. And, developing confidence is vital to being a
great drummer!

Many new drummers lack confidence. I think one of the main
reasons is because they tend to compare themselves with
other drummers who have been playing longer, are famous, or
who have a bigger drum set. Whatever the reason, don\’t do
that! You\’re not being fair to yourself.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Beauty is in the eye of the
beholder?” What that means is, what may be impressive to you
may not be impressive at all to someone else. For example,
you may think highly of a particular musician or singer, but
someone else is not going to agree with you. They have their
own favorites.

What I\’m saying is this, you are a better drummer than you
think you are. “Better than who?” you may ask. Again, better
than someone who\’s never picked up a pair of drumsticks! See
yourself from someone else\’s perspective. You play… they
don\’t. And, if you have any drumming skills at all, they may
think you\’re awesome.

Again, teaching what you know will help you to learn even
more and will improve your confidence. Besides, teaching
someone else how to play an instrument can be a real
eye-opening experience for you. Students often bring a whole
different perspective to the table and they\’ll challenge
your thinking for sure.

So, find someone who wants to learn to play the drums and
then teach them. Finding them is easy. All you have to do is
ask. Opportunity abounds for wanna-be drummers!

Why Some Popular Diets Aren’t Good For You

Monday, September 17th, 2007

“You’re only as fat as the food you eat,” is a very popular saying nowadays and everyone is trying to lose weight with low intake diets. Sounds very logical doesn’t it? Eat less and be less fat, right? That concept works in our heads but to be honest that’s not exactly how it works in reality. I’m going to tell you how low intake diets work in reality and why you should stay away from low intake diets such as the negative calorie diet.

Low intake diets have to be one of the biggest pitfalls for people trying to lose weight simply because it wrecks their metabolism. Think about it. A low intake diet basically means that you eat less and you almost starve yourself. This causes your, probably already slow, metabolism to slow down dramatically and, to cut a long story short, that will pretty much be the end of your fat burning days. In other words you will lose weight at first with a low intake diet but in the end you will find it difficult to maintain your weight and you will eventually gain it all back again. You don’t want that do you?

Oh but you’ve read so many testimonials about how well a low intake diet helped other people. As I said before with a low intake diet you will lose weight but in the end you will have trouble maintaining it. These people who write testimonials have lost weight but they haven’t yet felt the consequences of putting the breaks on their metabolism.

Don’t condemn your metabolism for a quick fix because you want to be slim in 2 weeks. You might regret it in the future. I’m warning you a low intake diet could mean you have to stay dieting for the rest of your life to stay slim. That’s day after day of feeling week from the lack of energy and that feeling of hunger in your stomach twenty-four seven.

Do yourself a favour and stay away from low intake diets. There are many other diets out there that will do you good. Instead of eating less why don’t you try just eating healthier food. Do a bit of research and find the diet that is good for you. Perhaps a little exercise wouldn’t do any harm. Just be careful of the low intake diet.

Don’t sit there any longer, get up and find out what diet you need. However, just stay away from the low intake diets.

The Detox Diet: Harmful or Helpful?

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

What, exactly, is a detox diet? As described by several sources, a detox diet is a nutritional regimen that involves changing bad eating and drinking habits in order to cleanse the body of toxins and other contaminants. A detox has become quite the thing to do these days, and many claim that completing a detox can improve overall health and digestion as well as to heighten resistance to illness and help in weight control. All of the above can be accomplished with good, nutritious eating habits and healthy living styles, but we seem to want to do everything the hard way; hence a detox diet becomes necessary to bring us back to the point where we should have been anyway.

A detox diet can be comprised of many different methodologies. Some people prefer to fast, and only drink water or juice for a certain period of time. Others prefer to increase the amount of fish they eat. Others restrict the amount of calories they consume while others resort to bottled methods like an herbal detox diet. Some even go on a lemonade diet that is more commonly known as the “Master Cleanse” detox diet.

It stands to reason that any detox diet must be carefully monitored to ensure proper ingestion of nutritious foods, and many merely suggest that a person add more fruits and vegetables to their diet. Of course, staying away from fast food and soda, cigarettes and alcohol is a given. A detox diet is all about changing eating habits and adopting healthy and nutritiously balanced diets and foregoing McDonald’s and Taco Bell offerings. It has become a fad to call anything that offers such a drastic change in eating or drinking habits a detox diet.

Still, some argue that the body is already more than capable of ridding itself of toxic wastes and that a detox diet is not only unnecessary but can also be dangerous. Our bodies are meant to contain a certain amount of fats and sugars, and to try to rid the body of these items with a detox diet can cause medical problems such as anemia, low blood sugar and lethargy and weakness. The balance of electrolytes, fats, enzymes, proteins, and carbohydrates in the body are finely tuned and shouldn’t be tampered with. A detox diet that allows only liquid is not to be considered a safe alternative to exercise and a normal, well balanced diet. Studies have shown that the lack of protein in most of the more common types of detox diet decreases muscle mass in individuals. With less muscle mass, the metabolism automatically slows down, which will threaten most well-intentioned weight loss diets regardless of what you do.

Call it what you will. While a detox diet can help people learn new and better eating habits, as with everything, a detox diet should be done using caution and good judgment. Perhaps we could avoid all this unnecessary detox diet stuff by just eating better and exercising more in the first place.

Alkaline Diet and Cancer: Cancer Cells Cannot Live In An Alkaline Environment

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Ever wondered why the heart never gets a cancer. The heart might get affected eventually by cancer of any other part of the body but we never hear of cancer of the heart. This is because the heart never gets cancer. Alkaline diet is perhaps the only permanent way to prevent and rid oneself of cancer.

Let us understand what causes cancer and how an alkaline diet can prevent it. Each cell in our body takes in oxygen, nutrients and glucose while throws out toxins. These cells are protected by the immune system. But as the body gets acidic the immune system gets overpowered by the toxins and the cell looses its capacity to take in oxygen and thus ferments. This cell gets cancer affected and is lost. The next question is can cancer be prevented and cured by consuming an alkaline diet. Cancer cells lie dormant in a ph of 7.4 but as the body gets alkalized higher and the ph level reaches 8.4 these malignant cells die off. So the answer to cancer lies in an extremely alkaline diet. When the alkaline diet will result in a high alkaline body ph the cancer cells cannot live in that environment and die off.

Cancer cells being anaerobic cannot live in oxygen. They can only thrive in very low oxygen conditions. When the ph of the body is maintained by consuming an alkaline diet the immune system of the body stays strong. This leads to the cells getting enough oxygen and discarding their toxin waste. Cancer will neither thrive nor take birth under such circumstances.

How does an alkaline diet prevent cancer? An alkaline diet leads to a high alkaline body ph. This high alkaline body ph results in alkaline tissues in the body. Alkaline tissues hold 20 times more oxygen than acidic tissues. Cancer cannot live in an oxygenated atmosphere. If the cells are oxygen rich they will prevent cancer. Therefore while an acidic tissue will be an ideal ground for cancer to develop as well as spread, an alkaline tissue will destroy a cancer cell. Having a lot of green vegetables and fruits along with alkaline water can save you from cancer. An alkaline diet requires one to eat foods that are high alkalizing while avoiding the acidifying foods.

An alkaline diet is very beneficial in fighting many diseases apart from cancer. Alkaline supplements are good ways to include alkaline food in your diet. Over cooking of vegetables leads to their nutrients being destroyed. Alkaline supplements make sure one gets enough alkalizing foods in a day. Also alkaline water is a good alternative to ordinary water. So if you want your body to be cancer free as well as healthy and energetic adopt an alkaline diet and make it your way of life.

Choosing Alkaline Diets Is The Only Way To Live A Healthy Lifestyle

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

The low carbohydrate and high protein diets doing the rounds these days are an invitation to bad health. All athletes know that if a fit body is to be maintained one should steer completely clear of such diets. Not only do they result in extreme fatigue but also are a disaster where weight management is concerned. Choosing alkaline diets is the only way to live a healthy life as well as shed those extra pounds.

Alkaline diets require one to follow a life style completely opposite of the high protein low carb diets. The high protein diets leave the person following it fatigued and tired. It is for those who lead a stagnant life and want to shed some weight. But the weight that is lost comes back on as soon as one stops the diet. With alkaline diets this is not the case. The diets can be incorporated into ones way of life and within days the results start to show. Alkaline diets require one to eat about 80 % alkalizing foods so as to maintain the alkaline ph of the body to 7.4. High protein diets tend to make the ph of the body acidic as opposed to its natural alkaline tilt. When the body ph becomes acidic it attracts all illnesses and depletes one of energy. An acidic ph also results in rapid degeneration of the human body cells. That leads to a shortened life. One should stay away from these crash diets and look at achieving health and vigor by following alkaline diets instead.

Alkaline diets lead to the body ph maintaining its alkaline nature. The various body functions are carried out smoothly and the immune system of the body stays strong. Under these circumstances one feels energetic as opposed to feeling fatigued. Also the weight shed like this stays off and most importantly the body does not fall sick. In other words alkaline diets help repel diseases as opposed to high protein diets which seem to attract them. Alkaline diets are also very good for those suffering from chronic diseases like arthritis, cancer, migraines, sinusitis and also osteoporosis. Following alkaline diets while taking medication helps fight these diseases off from the root.

Alkaline diets constitute mostly of fruits and vegetables. One should try and consume green vegetables and sweet fruits so that they make up about 70 to 80 percent of their total food intake. Lemons and melons should also be eaten. Almonds, honey, and olive oil are also high on the list of foods to be consumed for following alkaline diets. Meats and fats should be avoided. All foods that are acidifying like coffee, alcohol, meats, and even certain vegetables like cooked spinach should not form more than 20% of ones diet. Alkaline water is also a must or those who want to follow alkaline diets. At least 6 to 8 glasses of alkaline water can do wonders for your body cleansing. Processed food is all acidic and also high on weight gaining substances and so should be avoided. Beverages like sodas are highly acidic and should not be consumed at all. It takes 32 glasses of water to balance out one glass of soda.

Alkaline diets are for everyone. Each one of us should stop abusing our bodies and look at a healthy and long life by making alkaline diets a part of our life style.

Alkaline Forming Foods & Their Benefits + Food Chart

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

To maintain our natural ph balance of 7.4 we need to eat 80% alkaline foods. But to eat alkaline foods we must know what the various alkaline forming foods are. By consuming these alkalizing foods we will be able to carve our road to good health and a long life.

Alkaline forming foods are mostly vegetables and fruits. Green vegetables are higher on the chart of alkaline foods. Broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, lettuce, miso, leeks are all alkaline vegetables. Even vegetables like carrots, tomatoes and potatoes with their peel are alkaline forming foods. Spinach is a tricky one, if uncooked it is an alkaline forming food but if we cook spinach it becomes an acid forming food. So one should try and consume spinach raw. Asparagus tips that are white are acidic and should be snipped away. Fruits like melons, mangoes, apples and bananas are all alkaline forming foods. Even lemons which are acidic in their nature are actually alkalizing foods since the affect that they have on the body is alkaline. Fruits and vegetables are all alkaline forming food but care should be taken that they are cleaned thoroughly before consumption so as not to consume harmful chemicals along with these alkaline forming foods.

Even though vegetables and fruits are alkaline forming foods they are not the only alkaline forming foods. Olive oil is a high alkaline forming food and one should try and cook all their food in it. Other oils such as vegetable oils and fats like butter are bad and acidic foods. Avocado butter is an alkaline forming food and should be substituted for normal butter. In fact milk and milk products are acidic and should be avoided. Almonds are alkaline forming food and are also power houses of energy. People of all ages should have a few almonds everyday. Honey is also an alkaline forming food and has great healing powers. For a sour throat try some honey with lemon and ginger and you will feel the difference instantly. Garlic is a very high alkaline forming food. Try and add garlic to most of your recipes.

For those who like their beverages a word of advice stay away from coffee and tea. These are acidic foods. Alkaline forming beverages are herbal teas, coffee substitutes and fresh lemon water. These can be safely consumed without harming the body or exposing it to diseases. One the other hand sodas and alcoholic drinks are highly acidic foods. One should consume fresh foods as opposed to processed foods since the latter is acidic in nature. Processed foods are all bad for the body and should be avoided completely.

But another very important requirement of the body is water. Normal water does not benefit the body as much as alkalizing water does. Alkalizing water, as the name gives away is alkaline forming and so greatly beneficial to the body. Consuming about 6 to 8 glasses of alkaline water is very healthy for the body and also helps maintain the ph balance so keeping the body away from all the diseases as well preventing cell degeneration.

Alkaline forming foods are the best gifts we can give our bodies. Only they can help the body develop a strong immune system.

Getting Started With a Low Carb Diet Plan

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Once you’ve finally made the decision to lose weight, and you’ve decided you want to try a low carb diet plan, the hard part is practically over. All you need to do now is simply get started. So let’s look at what your first several days of a low carb diet plan might be like.

Day one of your low carb diet plan should really start with some firm decisions. First you decide you will lose weight of course, and second you decide to go with a low carb diet plan to accomplish that weight loss. Next though, you need to choose which low carb diet plan you intend to follow. Three popular ones include the Atkins low carb diet plan, The South Beach low carb diet plan, and The Glycemic Index low carb diet plan.

Regardless of which plan you choose, the goal is to lower your daily intake of carbs, and start really losing some of the extra weight and fat your body has been holding on to. So on day one, decide which low carb diet plan you will be following and familiarize yourself with how that low carb diet plan works specifically.

Day two of your low carb diet plan will involve planning and preparation. First you need to clear out your cabinets, pantry, fridge and freezer. Toss out or give away any high carb, high sugar content foods that you won’t be eating with your low carb diet plan.

Most low carb diet plans don’t allow you to have certain foods in the first week or two on the plan, but you can gradually add those foods in later. So you may find yourself getting rid of foods you have right now that aren’t overly high in carbs, but aren’t yet allowed for the start of your low carb diet plan. Don’t despair though… many of these foods will be added back in over the next few weeks.

Next you will want to make a list of what you will be eating for at least the next week. Include meals, snacks and liquids, then create a shopping list for all of those items. Last but not least, you will go to the store and buy all of the foods on your list.

Taking these steps will help you get started right with the low carb diet plan of your choosing, and it will help you stick to the proper guidelines and instructions for that plan as well.

Day three of your low carb diet plan is when you will actually change the way you eat. You don’t have to wait until this day to get started with your new low carb diet plan, but it can be helpful to start fresh at the beginning of a new day, instead of starting in the middle of a day. Starting your new low carb diet plan at the beginning of a brand new day will make you feel more committed to the plan instead of feeling like it was an impulsive decision on the spur of the moment.

Day three is a good day to do a bit of cooking too. By preparing foods that are allowed during this beginning stage of your low carb diet plan, you’re making sure you will always have something good to eat that’s easy to just grab and go. One of the biggest pitfalls of most low carb diet plans is that you need to cook the proper foods for your particular plan. And if you don’t have something cooked and ready when you want it, you’re more likely to fall off the plan and sabotage your weight loss efforts.

The next several days of your low carb diet plan might not be the best. You will experience sugar and starch cravings, you may be tired and lethargic, and you may have headaches or mild dizziness. These are all standard symptoms of starting a low carb diet plan, because your body is cleaning out all the extra starches, sugars and junk that’s been stored up for awhile. You body is going through withdrawal from the lack of sugar that it’s used to, and these early days on your low carb diet plan are when having pre-cooked foods is most important, because you’re at a higher risk of quitting when you’re not feeling well.

Once those few days of withdrawal are over though, you will very likely be thrilled with the results of choosing a low carb diet plan. You’ll have more energy, you won’t feel as bloated, and you might even notice clothes are already started to fit more loosely too!
