Book Review: Finding Your Own North Star

The North Star is a fixed point used by mariners and explorers to figure out which direction they’re headed in. According to coach and author Martha Beck, each of us has our own North Star, which is the knowledge deep within each of us of what our perfect life is. It is there for each of us to discover and when we do, and follow it, life becomes easier no matter what is going on.

In this book, Beck explains how we each have two selves, our “essential self”, which is our true self that makes us unique, and our “social self” that is directed by all we learn from our family, friends, teachers, and society in general. Our essential self is the one that recognises and follows its north star, but unfortunately, for most, it is the social self that’s in the driving seat.

The key to finding and following your own North Star is to reconnect with your essential self and then allow the social self to realise your dreams. Beck helps the reader to clearly understand how they got so lost in the first place, and with many inspiring examples from the clients she has worked with, she provides interesting exercises to help you uncover your own true path. She helps you to learn how to read your own emotional compass, thereby discovering how to overcome the obstacles that prevent you from leading the life your essential self wants.

To successfully implement lasting and significant changes in your approach to life requires an inner journey first and foremost. Only when you understand who you really are and what you really want for you, will you manage to pursue your goals without sabotaging yourself. When you’re connected with your essential self, you carry this knowledge and with it the power to overcome your obstacles. If you’re not there right now, then this book would be an excellent starting point for you.

Hilda Carroll is a life and business coach who specialises in helping her clients to enjoy the journey, by realising the ability to BE happy WHILE they pursue their goals, the achievement of which then becomes a bonus, rather than the basis of their happiness.
