Loose Tea

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Enjoy your cup of tea-Good if it is packed but better if it is loose!

For most people, drinking tea is mainly an enjoyable activity; one that they indulge in for recreation and for taste. And for this reason, they never bother to differentiate between the different kinds of tea, unless it is for taste. Very few people, therefore, will differentiate between loose tea and bagged tea for health benefits. But if you are one of those who start their day with a cup of tea made out of a tea bag instead of loose tea, you are depriving yourself of tea that is surely superior to the tea you are drinking every morning. And when I mean ‘superior’ tea, I refer to taste as well.

Before I draw out clear comparisons between loose tea and bagged tea, I want to clarify that when I mention ‘bagged tea’, I do not include the bagged teas that are made up of whole tea leaves. Instead, I refer mainly to the generic tea bags. The obvious health benefits of tea are well known to all. We all know that tea contains oils and chemicals that are responsible for the various health benefits of tea and also for its unique flavor. These oils and chemicals are contained in the leaves of tea. If the leaves are broken down into smaller pieces, for putting in tea bags, the composition of these oils and chemicals is altered thereby affecting both the nutritive value and the flavor of tea.

Drink it loose!
Tea bags contain fannings, that are tiny pieces of tea leaves. On the other hand, loose tea is made up of whole leaves of tea. As explained above, this makes loose tea superior to bagged tea both in nutrition and in taste. The tea leaves are so tightly packed in a tea bag that air circulation inside the bag is severely compromised. This hampers the swelling and expansion of the tea leaves, which is essential for drawing out their taste and flavor. On the other hand, ‘loose’ tea is packed ‘loosely’ in containers. Another advantage that loose tea enjoys over bagged teas is that it gives the consumers the choice to have strong or weak tea by individual measurement.
Many people might argue that they prefer bagged teas for the wide variety of flavors that are available in bagged teas. This is a case of sheer ignorance. All varieties of tea, in fact more than those available in bagged tea, are available as loose tea. There are much superior qualities of tea that are available in loose teas than bagged teas. Very few varieties of teabags actually contain superior tea. This is not to say that all loose tea is of superior quality but in terms of comparison, loose tea surely has a wider variety of superior quality tea.

In terms of cost too, loose tea is a lower priced product than bagged teas. At the same price, you will be able to drink a cup of much superior tea made out of loose tea than one made out of bagged tea. And for a similar quality of the tea, bagged tea is much more expensive than loose tea.

To be fair to bagged teas, the only point that can go in its favor is the fact that bagged teas are more convenient to choose, for that is what is widely proclaimed by teabag enthusiasts. Even if you agree to that, you would not sacrifice flavor, quality, taste and so much more for convenience alone. Would you?

Business Growth Tips: A Roadmap to Business Growth & A Prosperous Future

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

For almost three years, JR Andersen, CEO of mid-size software company Andersen High Tech (AHT), and his board have been uneasy. Business growth has been “OK” at eight percent but the market has been growing at a 15 percent annual rate. With almost half the growth from price increases, unit growth for the main product line has been less than five percent. Fortunately, margins have been expanding nicely along with management bonuses, so things aren’t too bad.

Or are they?

With business growth rates well below the market, AHT is losing customers and hence market share. At a minimum, this means lost opportunities.

Competitors are gaining enough critical mass to develop the next product faster or better. AHT’s biggest competitor has won three bids with “leading edge” requirements, leaving JR worried about his next generation product.

If you were JR and his board, where would you look to escape this predicament? My experience suggests the answer is in marketing strategy, not in technology.

To increase your company’s business growth, your new thinking and priorities should focus on:

- Finding hidden opportunities – Your potential business growth solutions are buried inside your current approach to product enhancement and development.
- Applying product discipline – You need to find and apply the right balance of technical and business factors for proactive product management.
- Discovering customer niches — You need to find specific customers with unique needs that you can serve better than others could.

Six months ago, JR started down this road. Here is his path to business growth success:

Finding the hidden portfolio gold & fixing your R&D investment black hole

AHT had a large “portfolio” of products and product enhancements in development. Like many companies I’ve seen, AHT’s pipeline had many small, incremental projects and very few truly innovative ones.

To fix his R&D problem, JR decided that he needed to divide the projects into 3 categories:

1. Major new products: Greater than 10 percent of firm revenue within three years.
2. Significant product enhancements: defined as substantial new customer functionality.
3. All other.

JR knew there were only four new products underway, counting two in the very early stages. He was surprised to find only seven significant enhancements, and even more surprised to find 73 “all other” projects.

Next, JR needed to understand the resources assigned to each category. Because there had been no central resource tracking, this step was hard for JR’s staff. They had to visit each product group and each functional organization several times before obtaining the necessary information. Everyone was surprised to discover only 20 percent of the resources assigned to major new products and another 15 percent on enhancements—with the remaining 65 percent working on “all other.”

The solution was obvious. Take resources from “all other” and add them to new product development or product enhancements. Not only did this improve confidence in launch dates, it opened a floodgate of possibilities for new products.

Applying Product Discipline

While looking at the AHT product development projects, JR first drew them out on a calendar showing launch dates. Then he asked his engineers and product managers some questions. They included:

- When are intermediate reviews scheduled and who is participating?
- Can you show me the specific customer needs that preceded the technical work?
- For existing products, do the product plans line up with corporate objectives?
- What are the skills and background of the people in product manager roles?

Like many companies, he found AHT only addressed these issues intermittently, meaning he received many answers he did not want to hear. In discussions with the vice presidents at the next staff meeting, JR and his executive management team agreed they needed to personally apply more consistent attention and focus.

Discovering Niches and Segments

Next, JR dug into the product plan for AHT’s product with the largest growth objective. He found the sales target, marketing communications plan, and the planned product enhancements. But the assessment of competitors was weak. Worse, the description of target customers and applications was missing. In other words, no description of why a customer would buy AHT’s product or which customers should be interested.

I’ve seen this pattern at many companies. The value proposition is missing or too broad, without real and specific customer benefits. Crafting a great value proposition includes becoming very specific about benefits in terms that affect the customer’s bottom line.

JR quickly realized that the most productive place to look for revenue growth was in incremental uses and new customers for AHT’s three key existing products. He asked his marketing, sales, engineering and customer service leaders to carefully understand and document each benefit received by current customers, then identify other similar customers.

Business Growth’s Bottom Line

After six months of focus, JR and his board are feeling better. Revenue growth for the last quarter was 17 percent and the most recent product launch was on time. The whole company now has a positive outlook and people are buzzing with energy. It took two new product managers and a lot of executive attention, but the customer niche/value proposition concept has really taken hold. The VP of sales even became a believer when he landed an elusive key account after a presentation of AHT key product benefits (rather than their technical capabilities).

The product launch schedule has six new products and fifteen enhancements in the pipeline, all with strong executive support and no more “black hole.”

I sincerely hope your company isn’t facing the problems faced by JR and his board at AHT. But if you are, try JR’s roadmap for business growth. Find the hidden opportunities, apply product discipline, and discover your customer niches.

Indoor Swimming Pools Linked to Increase in Childhood Asthma

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

A recent Belgian study, reported by the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found that children who use indoor swimming pools have an increased risk of asthma. The study was conducted by scientists at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium.

The researchers found that the prevalence of childhood asthma was closely associated to the number of indoor pools for every 100,000 people. They discovered that for each extra swimming pool per 100,000 people, asthma rates in an area go up by 2 to 3 percent. The team of scientists looked at rates for asthma and associated problems in a study of 180,000 children aged 13-14 from various European countries. The researchers believe this increase could be caused by chlorine build-up in indoor swimming pools.

The number of indoor pools varied greatly between Easter and Western Europe; ranging from one pool for every 50,000 inhabitants in Western Europe to one for every 300,000 inhabitants in Eastern Europe. The findings revealed a clear East-West divide in indoor pool availability and rates of asthma.

The Belgian study, presented by Dr. Simone Carbonnelle, showed that exposure to chloramines greatly increases permeability of the lung epithelium. This is a condition that is associated with cigarette smoking. Chlorine by itself isn’t the problem; it’s what happens when chlorine is combined with organics. The organics are produced by pool users in the form of sweat, dander, urine, etc. The chlorine reacts with these organics, producing dangerous chemicals such as nitrogen trichloride, aldehydes, chloroform and chloromines.

According to Dr. Carbonnelle, the level of lung permeability is equivalent of what she would see in a heavy smoker. "These findings suggest that the increasing exposure to chlorine-based disinfectants used in swimming pools and their by-products might be an unsuspected risk factor in the rising incidence of childhood asthma and allergic diseases", reports Dr. Carbonnelle.

This research may help explain why swimmers in indoor pools are more prone to asthma than athletes in other sports. During the 2000 Olympic Games held in Australia, it was revealed that more than one-quarter of the U.S. Swim Team suffered from some degree of asthma.

An effective way to combat this problem is with a good quality, high efficiency indoor swimming pool dehumidifier. The dehumidifier removes the chlorine along with the moisture laden air. The HI-E Dry line of swimming pool dehumidifiers features remarkable energy efficiency.

When Your Registries are Dying, What Do You Do?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Quite often there are stages when a user finds that something is wrong with his/her computer and quite frankly most of them don’t even know what exactly went wrong or how to correct this problem.

Majority of such population are either the young college going newbie’s or the middle to old aged office going or retired people. The only problem with either kind is the lack of education about the applications and utilities on the internet which can make their and their computers life a lot easier.

What happened to there computer? Majority of these people have come across an advertisement on the internet and after clicking on those ads and few more with similar kind they find that there computer is acting crazy or getting slower. If they go in for an expensive repair or check-up they will be ripped off their pockets. So how can such class of not so computer savvy peoples be assisted? Online education about the product is the only way to easy off their curiosity.

For those who have found their computer speed coming down from a sports car to that of a truck, can now look in for the Registry First Aid software which is the most comprehensive system utility present today to help overcoming odd computer behaviors.

It’s faster and identifies more problems aggressively that are directly affecting your computer’s performance than any other software. Do you know, every application installed on your computer knowingly or unknowingly create new links in the registry?

Now what is Registry? Registry is the system application which stores the values generated and created when any Microsoft or Non-Microsoft compatible application is installed on a windows operating system like windows 98, 2000, XP etc.

Registry First Aid is a People’s Choice award winning software with great feedback and news from its user around the world to try. Its major accomplishment are improving system performance, killing unwanted or missing registry entries which were causing the slow computer boot-up, various application hang state and even the much talked out ‘Blue Screen’ scenarios. Lots of people have appreciated the way this software has helped their computers.

Do you know? When an application is installed on the operating system it creates a minimum of 100 registry entries. Also, if you remove a 3rd party windows compatible application, it does not go away without leaving at-least 5 invalid links.

Do you know? Majority of system crashes are caused by the failure of registry to find out the referred link pointing to a particular system or application resource which is no longer available on that local computer!

In similar cases if the files were moved from one drive to another, they would not update the registry links and cause a much hated delay. Therefore, things Registry First Aid does is to:

· Find any invalid file/folder links or references in Windows operating system which can be 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP

· Allows the user to specify the drive and path to look for registry referred files or folders

· Repair the registry by finding exact match to re-link invalid entries

· Give an ability to user to choose to delete or retain invalid references

· Create undo files which can be used to bring back a system to a previous registry state.
All the undo files are stored in RegEdit4 format.

Fight Your Registry Attacks - Fix Your Computer Heart

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Registry is a place where the applications interact with the operating system. In other words, registry is a big cyberspace within a local computer where all the bit and pieces of an application/operating system are lined with the root known as ‘Kernel’ to generate compatibility. Guess if the registry gets infected by malicious software’s or spyware programs, your computer will obey the orders as lined up in the registry which can impact computer performance and user’s privacy.

How do you clean you registry from infected entries? Do you think a user can look over the registry and find out those entries from thousands of others and delete them?

Well! A good thought can lead to an invention and we have a very useful tool called Registry Mechanic which checks the registry for unwanted entries and cleans them or repairs the problems is few simple clicks. A tool you will get used to when running it on weekly basis throws up malicious entries to your surprise which were unknowingly installed and found on your computer. Once you have downloaded the software, it can be installed in very simple steps. The application interface is very easy to understand and with options like ‘Scan Your Registry’ you can allow the software to check the system for any shared or missing or bad registry entries.

At this step the software is basically checking the registry for any shared or violated operating system or other application links as it scans through

· various trusted files extensions,
· Software location with missing or incorrect links,
· Registry health and integrity,
· Windows Fonts which can also be an area of target,
· Help and resource files can be missing or corrupt in the registry,
· Shared DLLs,
· Startup programs, entries of those application which were un-installed from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs,
· Virtual device entries,
· Temp files /shortcuts, files extensions followed by
· Deep registry scan going through every registry entry.

Performing registry cleaning every week would make your computer run faster with the windows operating system and other windows compatible applications. The only purpose of Registry Mechanic is to analyze the registry using a scripted algorithm for broken links and other broken or missing references of any other 3rd party application etc.

Why would there be broken links? There is a user tendency to test software’s and utilities available on the internet and un-install them if they are useless. Not every un-install is completely removed from your system and leaves unwanted traces or marks in the form of broken or missing registry link. Every time your computer is started, it would scan through every registry entry to link with the applications installed on the local computer. Now if the links are broken, the computer, as expected, will wait for some time before moving ahead with other links causing a delay and making your computer slower and slower day-by-day.

Registry Mechanic also gives a cool option of backing up registry before deleting unwanted entries just in case something goes wrong. You can then trigger the restore of the older registry version, getting the things back to normal. Also a ‘Compact Registry’ and ‘Repair’ option allows the Registry Mechanic to create a System Restore point, again for the same reason ‘if something goes wrong’.

Therefore, we now understand why software like Registry Mechanic is important and must stay in every user’s collections of cool system utilities.

Here we will look at the benefits in more detail how it can reduce stress and also improve your psychological state and overall sense of wellbeing.

Meditation has been proved scientifically to combat stress and the reason is that it simply counteracts it.

What happens during stress?

During stress, the heart beats faster and blood pressure rises. The blood flow is diverted from the internal organs to the muscles as well as the areas of the brain that control muscle coordination as the body is in a state of fight or flight.

All this leads us to the feeling exhausted, anxious and stressed.

Stress is induced by stimulation of the hypothalamus of the brain relaxation can achieved by countering this stimulation by countering it with meditation.

Clinical studies have shown that Meditation can contribute to an individual’s psychological and physiological well-being as meditation brings the brainwave pattern into an alpha state.

It is this alpha state which is the level of consciousness that promotes the healing state.

Meditation and stress relief

Benefits of Tea

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Strange how a teapot can represent at the same time the comforts of solitude and the pleasures of company. ~Author Unknown

Company and solitude besides, a teapot is surely a storehouse of many valuable treasures that are beneficial to human health. The fact that Tea is the most widely and also commonly consumed beverage in the world gives rise to a lot of speculation about the benefits of tea. Even though most of us who enjoy a cup of tea every morning do not bother much about the medical, or other, benefits of tea except the fact that it rejuvenates us, tea is a beverage that has many benefits. People drink tea for different reasons. Most of us, as mentioned above, drink tea for the sense of rejuvenation that it imparts after a long sleep. Many others enjoy a cup of tea for its taste, the warmth it provides during the winters and for the pleasure of company, while others may just drink a few cups of tea at different times of the day out of habit.

Whatever the reasons for the consumption of tea, it is a fact that almost all tea drinkers are immensely benefited by the consumption of this beverage. Most people believe that it is only the green tea that is beneficial for health, while other varieties of tea may actually cause damage, if consumed in higher quantities. This is a misconception. Almost all varieties of tea, whether it is green, black or red, contain polyphenols that impart to tea its antioxidant properties. The difference in the color of the different varieties of tea is based on how long the tea is processed. The longer a tea is processed, the darker the color of the tea. The processing time, and subsequently the color of the tea has no impact on the content of the polyphenols in the tea.

Polyphenols are most commonly renowned for their anti-cancer properties. It is therefore obvious that the consumption of tea will save you from skin, gastric, ovarian and esophageal cancers. The other benefits of polyphenols include the lowering of cholesterol level and prevention of blood coagulation. The content of polyphenols in tea gives tea the status of a nutritive beverage that can be compared in terms of its nutritive value to fruits and vegetables.

Green or black! Does it make a difference?

It is widely believed that the medical benefits attributed to tea can only be associated with Green tea. Even though researchers have proved that all teas, black, green or red contain the invaluable polyphenols who impart tea its cancer-fighting properties, it is a fact that Green Tea has been acclaimed much more than the other teas for its health benefits.

It was the Chinese who discovered the medicinal properties of green tea about 4000 years ago. In fact, green tea was considered a panacea by the Chinese; a cure for all ailments from a minor headache to life threatening tumors. Various other researches conducted both in Asia and the west have revealed crucial health benefits of drinking green tea such as the prevention of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol, various infections and cardiovascular diseases.

The difference lies in the ‘kind’ of polyphenols

Perhaps what make green tea more special than the other teas is the presence of catechin polyphenols; and particularly the presence of a potent anti-oxidant known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The importance of this category of polyphenols lies in the fact that they are instrumental in not only inhibiting cancer but also in destroying the cancer cells. Since green tea is only steamed and not processed like the other varieties of teas, the invaluable polyphenpols remain intact in the green tea. In the other varieties of tea, the processing which involves fermentation converts the polyphenols into other compounds, thus reducing their potency of the polyphenol compounds to a great extent.

Certain studies have also proved that green tea is beneficial to dieters. Green tea has also been found to be beneficial in cases of tooth decay and many companies have started using green tea as an ingredient in skin care preparations, such as lotions and creams, and even deodorants

Raise a toast to your health-with a cup of tea!

So, next time you raise your morning cup of tea to your lips, don’t forget to think of all the healthy compounds that you are drinking along with this cup of tea. Ideally, tea should be brewed for at least 3-5 minutes to extract the full benefits of polyphenols. You should also restrict the intake of tea to 3-4 cups in a day.
Certain additions, such as thyme, ginger, cardamom, fennel, anise, to a cup of tea can impart distinctive properties to tea. For instance, Thyme tea has antiseptic properties and soothes and even heals sinus, Ginger tea works miracles in curing digestive ailments, Cardamom tea has antispasmodic properties, tea made from rose hips removes wrinkles and hydrates the skin and oatstraw tea helps in losing weight and also boosts immunity.
There still remains a lot to be discovered about the health benefits of drinking tea. What is established, as of now, is that tea is surely a recommended beverage to be consumed 3-4 times in a day. It fights cancer, lowers cholesterol and shrinks tumors. The recommended varieties of teas are the ones that are brewed from black, green or red tea leaves. It is not necessary that you should restrict yourself to ‘hot’ tea. Iced teas are as beneficial to health as a cup of hot tea. Also, contrary to popular belief, milk in no way damages the antioxidant properties of tea. So, go ahead and add a generous portion of calcium rich milk.

Of course, like anything, excess of tea has its drawbacks. Having a cup of tea immediately after meals can hamper iron absorption. Also, avoid taking any medication with a cup of tea as it may sometimes cause an adverse reaction.

Don’t Be Scared - I Know How You Can Convert From Any Movie Format

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

There are often occasions when people around the world rent DVDs from a online or local store and then if they happens to like the movie, would either go for a DVD purchase or many of them would use a ripping or conversion software to convert the DVD into another supported format like for example a VCD format. Once the Video has been converted successfully, it can then be burned using different burning software on to a CD-ROM or 3 or 4 such movies can still be clubbed together into a 4 in 1 DVD.

WinMPG Video Convert is a good utility which can used for such a conversion and burning experience, as the software basically converts almost all commonly supported formats existing today!

With the range of video formats existing like AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, VCD, DVD, SVCD, DivX, WMV, RMVB, 3GP, SWF, QuickTime etc., a user can pick and choose the kind of output format desired for the video storage.

The WinMPG Video Convert is very easy to install and takes almost 1 minute to get the application configured on your personal computer. Once the software has been installed it can be opened from a desktop application icon or from program menu options. Once the program is opened the user will be stunned with its application interface which unlike many others in the market has a very small and stylish appearance.

For those who are familiar with Windows Media player skins would find an absolutely similar experience with the difference in menu option only. Since there are only few conversion option available on the main application interface like All to VCD, All to DVD, All to MPG1, All to MPG2, All to AVI, All to RmvB etc., if the user desires to pick an option not available in the list, he/she can choose to select it from a drop down list button (with down arrow icon). You will find many more conversion option in the menu along with a capture option which allows the user to take snaps. Pick up the input file and the output file; now move along the picture until you reach the frame which you would like to capture. Move the mouse over to the Capture button and click once. Your picture is ready with fabulous quality.

Let’s see how the conversion process takes place. Pick up the desired conversion option which would take you to another application interface where you will be required to select the input file which can be in any format existing today. Now select the output location on your computer and that’s all. You don’t have to mention the output file as it would be named automatically depending upon the format.

For example you have clicked on the option ‘ALL to DVD’, the next screen will be a preview window and a conversion input/output file details with an ‘Advance’ option which will let you know the duration it would take to finish the conversation. Also, there is an ‘Information’ icon which will display the files format details.

In our case, when the user clicks on the ‘Convert’ button he/she will be prompted to select the DVD Setting like the ‘Format setting’ to either PAL or NTSC and ‘Video Size’ etc. Preview is an option a user can choose to check on the conversion progress. Overall, it’s a very nice piece of software which can be used effectively for video conversion and taking Snapshots.

Save on Carpet Installation – Do It Yourself!

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Carpet installation by professionals may cost you more than you thought. If you look at the itemization on the bill you’ll find something that may look like this: $2.40/sq. yd. For old carpet removal, $4.75/sq. yd. to install new carpet, $10.25 (each) to install carpet on stairs, $30 per hour to move furniture, $.20 per linear foot to replace tackless strip… and so on. You get the picture.

Tools & Equipment

So here’s a short primer on how to install carpet yourself. Although it’s not an easy job, it’s not brain surgery, either. You’ll need include a tape measure, utility knife, hammer, heavy-duty stapler, chalk line, duct tape, gloves, carpet seam tape, safety goggles, and kneepads. Rental equipment includes a knee kicker, a carpet stretcher, a seam cutter, seaming iron, seam roller, wall trimmer, and strip cutter.

Getting Ready

First remove all baseboards and cut manageable strips of the old carpet (about 2′ wide) with the utility knife. Loosen it from the tackless strips and roll up. Remove the tackless strips and the old carpet underlay. Vacuum area thoroughly.

Install new tackless strips around the perimeter of the room with teeth facing the wall. Using a block of wood as a spacer, leave about a ½” space between the strip and the wall.

Laying Underlayment & Carpet

Beginning at a corner and hooking it over the tackless strips, lay new underlay strips right next to one another, but don’t overlap them. Staple along the inner side of the tackless strip and then trim excess. Duct tape the seams.

Roll out the carpet and fold one end over itself. Mark the measurement of the longest wall plus 6” on both edges of the carpet. Using the chalk line, join the two marks. Place scrap piece lumber the carpet you’re about to cut (so you don’t accidentally cut through the carpet underneath!) and use a utility knife and straight edge to cut off the piece you’ve just marked.

Using Knee Kickers and Carpet Stretchers

Place the toothed end of the knee kicker into the carpet about 3” from the wall and push your knee with as much force as possible into the padded end of the kicker. The idea is to stretch the carpet over the tackless strip where the teeth of the strip will grab it, holding it tightly in place.

Place one end of the carpet stretcher against the wall where you’ve attached the carpet with the other end of it about six inches from the opposite wall. Pushing the lever on it, stretch the carpet to fit snugly over the tackless strip on the opposite side of the room. Work your way around the perimeter of the room, trimming the excess carpet at the edges with a wall trimmer.

Working With Seams

Overlap the first piece of carpet by 4” to 6”, and with the seam cutter, cut through both layers, making sure the edges match exactly. Pull back the seam and center (adhesive side up) a strip of seaming tape on the floor beneath. Run the seaming iron along the tape to activate the adhesive and then replace the two carpet seams down onto it. Go over the seam with a carpet seam roller.

Tuck down the carpet between the wall and the tackless strips using a stair tool and hammer. Trim carpet at doorways with centered edges and install door-edge strips. Replace baseboards, and…you’re finished!
