The Girls: Lori Lansens

Quite a short and interesting story - quaint in some places and very easy to read.

It is set in Canada and although it is fiction it is written as if it’s an autobiography of conjoined twins. The story is told in the words of both “The Girls” Ruby and Rose. The girls tell us with great emotion and feeling the story of their brief but full lives. The love they have for each other and their adoptive parents shines through but in a realistic way without too much sentimentality.

There are times when you see from each girl the frustration of their unique situation and you learn such a lot about each twin from the way the other talks about them. Their parents make life for them as ordinary as they can by love and example which allows the girls even after their deaths to continue to live lives that are in many ways fulfilled and, in others, empty and searching.

I found the need to tell their story very emotional and compelling but also a little sad that it was really futile and the one person for whom the story was written would never read and probably never should.

Even with dreams and hopes I believe the girls realise this a good way before the book ends. The characters feel real and they grow throughout the book. You learn their ancestry and see their goodness and faults. The scenery is well described giving you a sense of being there. You can picture their home, the fields and the kitchen on “Slovak Night“. I don’t think this was the book I expected when I started it, however it was not disappointing - it was thought provoking, funny in places, sad in others and a joy to read.

US FDA Food Contact Approvals: The Use Is the Key

When it comes to understanding what it takes to be approved as a “food contact substance,” the key question is what kind of use the substance will have. The possible different kinds of food contact substances are twofold: Food additives, which actually enter into the food in what often are rather minimal quantities; and food contact materials, such as packaging and cooking utensils.

The key questions for food contact substances that are not food additives are how much of them actually become combined with the food itself and what are the conditions of the use of the food contact materials, e.g., for liquid foods, acidic foods, hot foods, cold foods, etc.

Based on the classification of the food contact material as an additive or simply a substance that will come into contact with food, as well as the kind of contact that will occur, US Food & Drug Administration (“FDA”) regulations specify exact kind of “extraction” testing that must be conducted in order to determine exactly what quantities of the food contact substances actually will be extruded into the food itself or, alternatively, the regulations provide for calculations of extraction without the need for testing (where the estimated extraction of materials is usually higher than what in fact is extracted).

After performing the requisite extraction testing, as well as providing the appropriate physical data and use description of the food contact material, a Food Contact Notification may be filed with the US FDA that will take up to 90 days to be approved. The key is reading the highly technical guidelines about what data to submit and in what form.

Our only advice to you would be to be extra cautious before you file a bankruptcy because it will mar your credit and follow you around for years. A short sale is when you work with a real estate investor, and give him permission to attempt a short sale your property with the lender. It usually works like this: the investor will contact the bank and attempt to build a case for why they should sell your defaulted mortgage to the investor for a discount.

For example, if you have a $200,000 dollar home, but you owe $210,000 on the mortgage (a situation called upside down: you owe more than the property is worth), then the short seller may build a hardship case concerning your circumstances to the bank, and point out problems with the property that may make the bank hesitate to want to take it back as a bank owned property after the foreclosure.

The bank, therefore, may agree to sell the home to the investor for, say, $150,000 dollars, thereby giving the investor a $50,000 dollar discount on the defaulted mortgage.

This benefits you because if the bank accepts the short sale, you will not go through a foreclosure, and get to avoid the damaged credit that comes with it, not to mention the embarrassment you may feel.

Option #2: Lease Option

Lease option is also known as rent to own. If you are facing foreclosure, you can work with a real estate investor who has connections and may be able to work quickly to find a tenant-buyer for your home. The tenant-buyer would then purchase your home on a rent to own basis.

They would make the monthly mortgage payments, and will be able to exercise the lease option at the agreed upon time to purchase your home.

Again, this is another way to avoid the foreclosure. However, just like with the short sale strategy, you will have to move out of the home. The benefit to you is the avoidance of the foreclosure and the damage to your credit so you can move on with your life.

Option #3: Straight Sale

Real estate investors may be able to purchase your home for cash quickly if the numbers makes sense.

Carefully consider all options. Just know that you DO have options if you are facing one of the mortgage foreclosures in huron county, Michigan.

My Feelings For The Imaging Supplies Business For 2007

Where has 2006 gone? In some ways it has gone quickly; in other ways less so. For many it has not been an easy one.

Looking at the imaging supplies business, the days of rapid growth were over. The stupidity of the price battle on compatible inkjet cartridges led to problems - financial losses and withdrawal of companies over dependent on this sector, quality problems as manufacturers resorted to cheaper components and cut on testing etc and action on the part of the OEM’s to recover market share

The toner business has been more stable – and more profitable. There are challenges, particularly as the demand for colour cartridges increases. Empties costs have in general fallen – leading to inventory write-downs for those with large stocks of certain cartridges.

So for 2007

I have a background in business planning and forecasting. I am not a prophet. However these are my predictions.

The OEM’s will make dramatic moves to regain control of the industry.
Up till now they have not made major changes to their business model because it would impact their own profitability. It would now appear that they could reduce ink and toner prices – on established products to lower the pricing umbrella. This would make compatible/remanufactured product less attractive to the distribution channels.

I expect them to do big deals with the distribution channels (chain stores, major wholesalers, contract B2B companies) to encourage them to sell OEM only. They will throw the rule book away to ensure that the channel’s bottom line is as good with OEM as with compatible/reman.

Major channels become more difficult to deal with. The drive by the figures leads to a lack of personal responsibility. The object is to ‘get the figures’, ‘please the boss’. Product managers/buyers are no longer business people. That is why the OEM is easier to work with – saves a lot of problems.

OEM’s more bypassing the channels? – quite likely.

Expect further difficult products and more IP action. The motive is frustration not money!

Chinese companies – maybe less of an issue. Expect to see less of them at Paperworld and Remax, not the least because the shows are moving to the east themselves. Don’t pass up on opportunities to visit the Far East even if you are very busy.

Consolidation amongst toner/inkjet remanufacturers. Most companies in the £1-£5m (€1.5-€7.5m) have serious issues. How do they maintain profitability? How do they control their supply lines? – in and out? How do they finance new business opportunities? How do they manage the tensions that arise within a company where things are not going according to plan? Merging is an option. Major problems can arise then when you try to merge two companies who have been entrepreneurially managed. This is compounded if done across national borders.

Higher interest rates? - who knows?

Quick-buck internet businesses fail. How many e-mails do you receive regarding affiliate marketing, adsense, pay-per-click etc.
BUT there are Opportunities to respond.

Increasing consumer frustration with the impersonal attitude of the ‘big boys’, especially in the channels. Solid local or internet businesses. People – believe it or not - like to deal with people.

Providing innovative solutions. People love testing new things. Perhaps I am an innovation-addict. But there are lots of people like me. And like me they are grey haired! That is where you need to get round to find these things. Don’t expect the next “Post-it” – but expect 100 small products.

Brighton Rock: Good and Evil

A dark and brooding book set in post war Brighton with well developed and believable characters. Ida Arnold is an unlikely heroine but is dogged in her pursuit of the villain Pinkie for whom she desires punishment and in her longing and need to save Rose, who she sees as an innocent and vulnerable child.

One of the main themes running through the book is of religion, heaven and hell, right and wrong and good and evil. All three main characters are Roman Catholic and for each this means something different. Rose, to my mind, has a strong sense of faith and what’s right but she feels strongly for Pinkie and because of this allows herself to be swayed away from those beliefs. She knows he is bad but she believes she can save him.

Pinkie has strong beliefs of redemption after death, he believes, for part of the book, in needing to repent before dying to save him from hell but then realises that he is already there. The descriptions of the Brighton inhabited and visited by the characters draws you in until you feel that you are there, you know the places, the smells the sounds and you know the characters.

You can feel the panic in Pinkie as he tries to cover up what he has done, pushing aside his religion, hatred and fear of intimacy to marry Rose and to go even further in consummating it to protect himself. At each turn you feel things become out of control. Ida believes in what’s right, good and evil. Once started on her course for justice and retribution there is no stopping her because she knows what is right!

The story is dark and thrilling and as you come to the dramatic climax you can’t help feeling total despair for Rose who is left with only a small glimmer of hope for her salvation that, we as readers, know will soon be shattered by a moment of pure evil by Pinkie from beyond the grave.
