Are You Throwing Your Money Away?

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

My story, describes just one of the many basic financial mistakes that most people make during their working lives. I am writing this with the hope that it may just trigger your financial alarms bells and save you and yours from potentially loosing thousands like silly oul me did.

I got my first Job in 1997 after graduating from college with a degree in Computer Engineering. I was on a starting salary of $29000. I also moved out of home and shared a rented house with some old college friends. The rent was approx $180 per month.

After a few months I took out a car loan for $22000 @ 9% per annum. Life was great and like most 22 year olds, I lived from pay check to pay check and had a great social life.

When I turned 24, I decided to start planning for my future and save some money. I cut back on my social life and was careful with my spending. Eventually I could save about $400 dollars per month.

I asked my bank manager for advice about my extra $400 and he suggested I put it into THEIR savings plan every month where It would earn 3.2%. I was chuffed with my-self. Like my parents and teachers had thought me, I was saving a percentage of my salary. And 3.2% is a nice no risk return from a reputable financial institution.

(THIS IS WHERE MY MONEY DECIDED TO HEAD FOR THE TOILET)

(! TIP Banks are out to make a profit for themselves. )

If I had just sat down and thought it through for a few minutes I would have saved myself a large sum of money. Also, if my bank manager had my true interests at heart, he would have explained this simple principal to me. But if he were to do that, my gain would take from the banks profits.

The simple Maths. My Loan was costing me 9% and my savings earning me 3.2%. If I had simply put my $400 extra towards repaying the loan every month here is what would have happened.

I would have decreased the term of my loan substantially and as well as paying off the loan early I would have saved approximately $2,200 in interest repayments. If I had continued the saving scheme, I would have earned interest of $683. That means I would have been $1,520 ($2,200 - $680) better off if id concentrated on repaying the loan.

That’s $1,520 I wasted. As foolish as my mistake was, the sad fact is, a huge number of people are doing the exact same thing. People are putting money away for their future, kids education etc, while also repaying high interest loans, consumer debt and credit card debt.

I was fortunate in that my loan was only over five years, yet people go through most of their life saving this way. Over 20 years my loss would have compounded to 10’s of thousands.

Now I’m not saying by any means that banks and loans should be avoided. Even the mega rich get loans. The difference is, they can make the loans work to their advantage. The points I’m trying to bring across is that one should pay close attention to how they repay their loans.

Keep in mind that your bank will bring out new products every year, saving plans, pension schemes etc and their staff are often given huge commissions when they sell the products.

High interest loans and credit card debt should always be paid off first. Then when your debts are cleared, keep the habit of re-investing your cleared loan installments towards savings and other higher yield investments.

I was almost at the end of my 5 year loan, when I was shown my silly mistake by a friend of mine who was giving me financial advice. He thought me to think practically about money and he also pointed me towards some financial self help books which have really helped get control of my financial destiny. Two books I highly recommend are, Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I urge you to study them.

I’m now 31 years old and I’ve now got my financial life well under control. You are probably thinking, (If this jackass can get control of his finances then so can I). YES you can. Make a commitment to start your financial education today and stay focused. Save/Borrow and Invest wisely. CAN.

I hope this simple story pushes some buttons for you. I wish you and yours happiness and prosperity.

Originally a computer programmer,John is now making more money through wise investing and basic financial strategies. Mauritius: Indian Ocean Paradise Lost

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

MAURITIUS: PARADISE LOST So there I was in the Mauritian capital of Port Louis. Our motley crew band of surfers left the cyber-cafe only to find the entire island besieged by rioters! It turns out a popular Mauritian-creole reggae singer was killed in jail by police and the people revolted, essentially turning certain regions of the island into full-on war zones! If you heard about it in the news, it is, indeed, all very true. Right before we left, all the shop owners were asking us where we were staying, warning us that “it is dangerous out there. You must be careful.” I thought to myself, “what do you mean ‘dangerous?’ Why would they care where I was staying?” But as it turned out, they wanted to know so they could warn us about the riots. Of course, we were more interested in getting some photos of the scene. So there we were, three Americans and one Mauritian local cruising home, cameras in hand when, lo and behold, we saw the road blocks and riot police keeping order. Unfortunately, they had already finished overturning burned out cars and rock throwing. Before I go on, I guess I should offer a little insight into the social and political scene there.

SOCIAL PRESSURE COOKER Mauritius is a religious and ethnic potpourri. You’ve got the Indians who comprise roughly 60% of the population with the remainder made up of Creole, Chinese, and Franco-Mauritians. The bulk of the government and police force is controlled by Indians in that they all elected their own into power. The Franco-Mauritians have most of the wealth, as they control most of the sugar industry and the like. The Chinese have quite a few shops and are, for the most part, very docile. The Creoles basically get the short end of the stick by all groups given their previous history as slaves, hence the root of the problem. There was a huge rally the previous weekend held in favor of legalization of marijuana. Some big reggae singer (a Creole) was jailed soon thereafter for possession and was beaten to death by police while in custody. This naturally didn’t sit well with the people, so 30 years of capped tension exploded into the worst civil rioting in as many years.

GOT MILK? The riots and looting began last week with all hell breaking loss after the initial bubble burst. It mostly took place at night, but there was some regional daytime rioting in other areas. The interesting thing about it all was that, as you may or may not know, many of the Indians are practicing Hindus. This means the cow is sacred. So guess what the rioters were using as shields? You guessed it: cows. They were using cows to shield themselves from police bullets!

As the days went on, we heard of others getting killed in police custody. And to boot, one of them was another reggae singer! That sent scores of already angry mobs into even more of a frenzy, adding to yet more nights of restlessness, rioting, and looting! I heard a story from one guy who had a tear gas canister fired by police whiz by his head as he was running.

CREOLE BY ACCIDENT OF BIRTH While I don’t condone rioting and looting, I am sympathetic to the Creoles. They really are a wonderful bunch of people, but seem the unfortunate and unwilling recipients of the short end of the social stick. I’ve only had positive experiences with them and could never understand why they were so vehemently persecuted! Maybe it’s an Indian/Creole thing beyond my comprehension. It shouldn’t be, but it is. Doesn’t matter where you go, ignorance, racism, prejudice, and unfounded hatred are everywhere.

SOUTH AFRICA OR BUST The morning of my flight, I heard from the locals that rioting was at a fever pitch. Most said not to go anywhere, but hey, I had a flight to South Africa to catch. Cruising along the local road out of Tamarin, I could feel the tension and believe me, it was palpable. No rioting or anything, but I was legitimately concerned we weren’t going to make it to the highway. Somehow we did make it to the main highway and from there it was smooth sailing. If we would have taken the back way, we would have gone through a little town called Curepipe in which, as I heard, the rioting was quite heavy.

I LIVED A CHAPTER OF MAURITIUS’ HISTORY The other day I was reading the local newspaper here in Durban (South Africa) when what to my surprise should I see but a whole article on the riots. Turns out that it was the worst rioting the island has seen in over three decades (ignorance is bliss!). And 30 years ago was when the island changed ownership. So that’s pretty bold, and lucky me, I was there just in time to score perfect waves at the fabled Tamarin Bay AND the worst rioting in 30 years! Somebody buy this man a lottery ticket!!

The night before I left, I sold my board to Julien, a local Tamarin Bay Mauritian. Boards are hard to come by there, and the ones they do have for sale are overpriced junk. We reached a mutually agreeable price and made the deal. It was good for both of us; he now has a good board and I didn’t have to carry it to South Africa.

MAURITIAN CHEESE GRATER I thought my recent impaling on the reef with resultant torn left butt cheek and low back was bad until Julien lifted up his shirt. The poor kid looked like a cheese grater went over his back from just below his shoulder blades all the way down to his low back! He was dragged over the reef in the worst kind of way! It kept him out of the water for a few days, too. It’s not difficult to get hurt at Tamarin. It is, spare none, one of the shallowest waves I’ve surfed. It’s generally pretty shallow all over, but the thing that makes it all the more dangerous is the volume of coral heads that jut up all over the place. I was literally pulled off my board and under water when my leash wrapped around one just as a wave was approaching, quite literally pinning me underwater. I fortunately had the presence of mind to unfasten my leg-rope and swim to the surface. And to further illustrate the shallow depth, I was sitting all the way out in seemingly deep water waiting for set waves!

THE RULES If you ever come to Mauritius, there are a few things to remember: 1) RESPECT for the locals. It’s their break and you are just a visitor. You take a number and work your way into the line up. No paddling straight for the peak; 2) Don’t fall on the inside or the reef will filet you like a set of Ginsu knives; 3) Bring reef booties because the inside is carpeted with urchins, big and small ones. I have never seen anywhere so well covered with them; 4) A Gath Helmet (brain bucket) is a damn good investment for dead low tide Tamarin; 5) A complete first aid kit because it’s only a matter of time until you donate skin to the reef or get spiked by an urchin. The place is carpeted with them. You cannot avoid it. Everybody gets spanked sometime or another….and it hurts!

In Short This Is Affiliate Marketing

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

What is Affiliate Marketing?

How you can make money from it?

Basically, it is one of the profit model or business model that is available to make money online.

And the best part about Affiliate Marketing (AM),you can make money without much of a setup.

Forget about creating a website, buying an autoresponder software etc.

Your main job is to refer people to a site where the products or services are being promoted.

Therefore the key to affiliate marketing is to Drive Traffic!

The site is managed by what we call the merchants.

The merchants will provide the necessary sales copy, follow up autoresponder emails etc.

Your job is to simply sign up with the merchant, and the merchant will generate a unique link for you.

This unique link will subsequently be embedded within the sales letter.

When people buy through your unique affiliate link, you will get paid commission.

The amount of commission depends on the products/services that you are promoting.

The merchant will decide the amount of commission being paid out to you but you get to choose the merchant in the first place!

A note on commission and that is to be clear if its a one time commission or a recurring commission.

This again depends on the type of products or services that you are promoting. It is important
to know that most affiliate programs are Free Of Charge, however there are a couple out there which requires you to become a member.

This is the essence of what affiliate marketing is all about, it is mostly about driving traffic

to your chosen merchants’ site.

Visual Basic.NET

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Visual Basic.Net which is shortly known as VB.Net is an Object Oriented programming language which could be examined as a progression of Microsoft’s Visual Basic implemented the Microsoft .NET framework. The .NET prologue was contentious as major modifications were made that ruined the backward compatibility in Visual Basic and it resulted a aperture inside the developer community. The most noticeable thing of Visual Basic.NET developers makes use of Visual Studio.NET as their IDE that is Integrated Development Environment.

Visual Basic.NET is the next invention of Visual Basic. It is designed to act as a simple, uncomplicated and major productive tool in order to generate a .NET application which comprises Web applications, Web Services and Windows application. Visual Basic.NET permits elective usage of latest language characteristics. There are quite a large number of predefined concepts that makes Visual Basic stronger and powerful, they are Inheritance, Exception Handling, Method Overloading and Threads. VB.NET completely incorporates with the .NET Framework and the CLR that is the Common Language Runtime, which mutually affords language interoperability, improved security, superior versioning support and easy operation.

With the help of the tool box available in VB.NET a person can drag the objects and make it place into the forms. As soon as placing the objects the developers can change the default property of each object controls and they can indicate the property and their behavior for every object controls. The objects will respond according to the property set up by the developer. There are quite a good number of features that are available in Visual Basic.NET and they are given here as follows.

The same object can be used frequently by use of the with keyword.

It has named indexers are properties that basically get arguments.

Imperative event wiring and is accessible in VB.NET and the Handle keyword lets declarative wiring of events to functions.

Visual Basic.NET electively overlooks the ByRef/Ref performance for passing arguments.

Optional parameter in VB.NET is valuable and helpful while making use of the COM automation.

Visual Basic.NET gives a good prop up to syntactic shortcuts. This is only because of the language bequest support. There are quite a number of tools and web controls that are not available in Visual Basic but which are present in Visual Basic.NET and the tools are panel, placeholder, calendar, validation controls, Xml etc., these are the controls additionally available in VB.NET.

Basic Photo Corrections in Photoshop CS

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Welcome to the cadillac of photo-enhancers: Photoshop CS!

Retouching in Photoshop can be a breeze… but not until you learn how. The Photoshop CS program is such a powerful application you could spend years just mastering the basics.

Most of us, however, don’t really need a Masters in Photoshop. What most of us want is the flexibility, integrity and vast array of choices that Photoshop provides.

Let’s look briefly at some of the most basic photo corrections in Photoshop CD, the ones you’ll really need. Here are the first steps recommended by the experts, and they represent the process they apply to every photograph:

1- First and foremost, duplicate your original and work only on the copy.

That way, if something goes wrong, you’ll always have the original. This is a great habit to get into.

2- Next, assure the correct resolution. There are two basic categories of “resolution” in computer graphics: the monitor resolution and the image resolution.

Image resolution varies from low (about 72 pixels per inch, or “ppi”) to high (anything 300 ppi or larger). Of course, the higher the resolution, the bigger the file.

To change the resolution of your photo, click “Image,” then “Image Size.” On the bottom left of the box that comes up, type in the ppi you want, for example, 300 ppi. (You will probably want to change the size at this point. That’s fine, you will still retain the ppi you chose.)

3- Use your Crop tool ( ) from the toolbox to shape your picture the way you want it.

Many people don’t notice the width and height options underneath the top menu, but it’s a very handy feature.

At times you have an exact measurement you need to fill; rather than fiddling with the numbers after you crop, the proper way is to insert the width and height immediately after clicking the Crop tool, and then making the crop, dragging down diagonally with your mouse. You will notice the exact measurements appear without a struggle.

4- Experiment with your automatically adjusting features. Click on “Image” in your top menu, then “Adjustments.” You will see options for automatic levels, contrast and color. After you’ve tried them, you can go ahead and hone in to polish, if you like.

You can also try Image> Adjustments> Shadow/Highlight (or “Variations”). You’ll be astonished at the variety of preset options there.

As you gan imagine, there are endless variations on the themes represented by these basic steps and the choices made therein.

But Photoshop expands past them and out into the great beyond, offering an unlimited palette and a universe of options.

Your only problem will be how to tear yourself away.

Romance in Florence Italy

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

When you imagine Italy, it is really Florence Italy that you are seeing. That is because Florence is at the heart of Italy. It is a place filled with passions and indulgences that awaken all the senses. Visual masterpieces are there to behold and one almost begins to salivate at the thought of the Florentine cuisine. To make the most of your visit to Florence, you can learn a little here about where to stay, what to do, and what you can expect from the locals.

A Warm Welcome

The first thing you expect from your visit to Florence is a warm and hearty welcome. The local people are lovers of people and are not afraid to show it. It is not uncommon to be greeted at your villa by a someone’s “Nona” (grandmother) with a big hug and a hot plate of food – no matter what the time is when you arrive.

Next your accommodation at any price level will be clean and pristine. The linens and furnishing may not be the most luxurious in the lower costing rentals, but they will be freshly washed and painstakingly starched. It’s just the Italian way to keep their homes extremely clean and they offer no less to their guests.

Some Choices on Where to Stay

There are some popular favourites within the city limits of Florence. The Savoy hotel, Florence, Italy is one of those. Here you will find five star accommodations within walking distance of two of Florence’s most popular attractions – the Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio.

Another Florence hotel popular among tourists is the Westin Excelsior. It is also located close to the most visited and historic attractions and offers rooms and services American’s are most comfortable with. In addition to these highest rated hotels, visitors will be comfortable at such centrally located lodgings as the Hotel Rivoli or Palazzo Galletti.

For extended stays in Florence you may want to look into apartment or villa rentals. Apartments can be found within the city limits, while most villas are about 20-30 km outside the city. For travel to wine country and then back to the city, Florence car rental offices can accommodate your needs.

Apartments in Florence Italy are generally small, but efficient. You will find a small kitchen is the norm, but they provide enough space to cook simple meals. For a short term rental, they are more than adequate and provide a good home base for exploring the entire Tuscany region.

Downtown Florence Italy is one of the most historically significant cities in Italy. Here tourists come to take in the Uffizi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio Bridge crossing the River Arno, and the St. Croce Chuch. In addition, there is the Duomo, the city’s Exhibition and Congress Centre. No visit to Florence Italy would be complete without feeding the pigeons at Boboli gardens or walking down the garden’s avenue lined with cypress trees dating back to the 1600s.

Florence is a city that needs more than a weekend to see it all. Plan on visiting during the most pleasant season between April and June and make sure you give yourself at least a week to enjoy the city and surrounding countryside.

What You Get with a Tuscany Car Rental

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Seasoned travellers and novices alike will find it is not difficult to rent a car in Tuscany. There may be a few minor obstacles to getting around, just as there would be in any other new location, but in general a Tuscany car rental is easy to acquire and simple to use.

Reserving Your Car

Most of the major car rental companies do business in Europe and have areas of their web sites for International rental. What may differ from booking a more local car rental is that you may not have as many choices in cars or be as familiar with the makes and models of your choices.

Cars in Europe tend to be smaller for the average renter. There are still luxury and larger rentals available, but they are not as common for navigating the narrow cities streets, many of which were built centuries ago.

To make a reservation you will need a valid diver’s license in the country in which you reside. Generally you do not need an International license unless you will be spending a long time in the area. You will also need a credit car to hold the reservation. Once the booking is complete, you will be given a reservation number that you can use to pick up your car rental at the airport or train station.

Driving Around Tuscany

Tuscany is a wonderful region to explore by car. It is dotted with major cities just short drives apart, with quaint villages filling in the gaps. There are breathtaking coastal drives and lazy, meandering cruises through the rolling hills of the countryside. With a car rental you can take it all in at your own pace.

You can drive through the wine region of Chianti and stop for a picnic and afternoon nap. You can park on the outskirts of the city and then walk through the streets to each tourist destination.

The driving in Tuscany is done as it is in the United States. Drivers stay to the right and the wheel is on the left – the opposite of Great Britain. The biggest difference an American driver may notice is the speeds. Many highways have very high speed limits equivalent to around 90 or 100 miles per hour or none at all! The best way to stay safe is to keep up with the flow of traffic. Slower drivers may actually be more of a hazard on this type of highway.

Many secondary roads in the country can be impassable during bad weather since the countryside is not as well travelled in some areas. You’ll want to plan according to the season.

Driving in Luxury

If you want the best of both worlds – the freedom of your own car and the carefree feeling of public transportation, then you may want to look into hiring a car with a driver included. Drivers are familiar with the roads, rules and system, so they can quickly get you where you want to go, while maintaining your schedule or lack thereof.

More of the benefits of driving mean you can pack more. You can also bring along picnics, shop to the capacity of the car’s trunk (and your budget for shipping items) that you may find along the country roads in Tuscany. Renting a car is the best way to be sure you get to do what you want, and on your own timetable.

Ken J. Morris works mainly for http://www.tuscany-italy-guide.com , an online publication with topics around holiday , travel and other areas. Through his publications such as http://www.tuscany-italy-guide.com , the columnist improved his capability on problems dealing with Tuscany car rental.

Calorad Review: Lose Weight While You Sleep? Don’t Count on It

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

INTRODUCTION

Calorad stormed onto the scene around the mid to late 1990s with claims that you can “lose weight while you sleep.” This product claims to improve a multitude of ills. The magic that seems of particular interest to the consumer are the claims that this product will enable one to lose fat and increase muscle mass without any real effort. We want to believe, but are we really that gullible? Are there any facts behind the product claims? Let’s start out with a closer look at the mystery ingredients found in Calorad.

MYSTERY INGREDIENTS?

Truth be known, there is nothing whatsoever mystical or magical about Calorad other than it is an expensive protein supplement. A breakdown of the ingredient list reveals:

Collagen Hydrolysate-Simply hydrolyzed collagen which is nothing more than degraded protein (collagen is a bodily protein). Why not eat an egg or a slice of chicken, or a can of tuna for $1.39?

Aloe Vera-has a laxative effect when ingested orally and can cause gastrointestinal upset in some individuals. I guess frequent trips to the bathroom could theoretically cause weight loss.

Glycerin-chemically, it is a sugar alcohol (1,2,3 propanetriol). It is probably used as a mild sweetener, as many users have mentioned Calorad’s off-taste.

Potassium Sorbate & Methyl Paraben-Nothing more than preservatives to keep the collagen from spoiling.

Natural Flavor, Demineralised Water-Just a couple of extras for flavor and volume, but would hardly have any effect in the body.

This, in fact, doesn’t appear to have any thing to do with magic. All of these nutrients can easily be found in food that we all eat on a daily basis.

WEIGHT LOSS

It is probable that the said weight-loss associated with Calorad stems from the fact that its users don’t eat anything before bed, three hours to be exact. Then the consumer is supposed to take the Calorad on an empty stomach right before going to sleep. Low and behold, watch the pounds not-so-miraculously melt away.

Enter critical thinking here: Let’s say Mary Q. Public was formerly eating 2500 calories per day, and hypothetically, 500 of those calories were regularly consumed within three hours before bed. So now she’s replacing those 500 calories with 14 calories worth of Calorad, for a deficit of 486 calories per day.

Considering about 3500 calories per pound of fat, we estimate that 486 calories (round up to 500 for simplicity purposes) multiplied by 7 days per week equals 3500 calories extra that are not being consumed. This alone would constitute a pound of fat per week. Add in exercise and the caloric deficit would be larger, consequently leading to greater weight loss. No magic here, just elementary arithmetic.

If we eat less that what we need for energy we lose weight. We certainly don’t need to spend extra money on Calorad to eat less. Well we still have another claim. Calorad’s promoters tell us to believe that this product will cause us to magically increase our muscle mass. Is there any truth to this claim?

LEAN BODY MASS INCREASES?

Believe it or not the claims still persist that Calorad will actually generate muscle in the body, or, I think the terminology used was that it can cause an increase in lean body mass. Irrespective of what is claimed, muscle does not just spontaneously generate based on the consumption of a protein supplement. To take this one step further, you could inject yourself with anabolic steroids (not that I advocate that) and not gain an ounce of muscle unless you provide additional demands on the body’s musculature via resistance training. It’s quite unlikely that hydrolyzed collagen certainly would cause an increase in lean body mass.

Ceding the benefit of the doubt, consuming protein while lowering calories can help attenuate the loss in muscle tissue associated with its breakdown for use in gluconeogenesis (forming glucose from not carbohydrate sources). But even so, this would not cause an increase in lean body mass. In this case, the burden of proof is on the company to provide legitimate evidence that it can, in fact, INCREASE lean body mass, and consequently the metabolic rate.

To those selling Calorad, if this proof exists please provide it for all to see. If you are convinced that it can increase lean body mass, explain how you quantify this increase. What tests have you done to prove that Calorad does indeed increase the amount of muscle? These are honest questions that deserve an answer. Is this not a claim made by Calorad and its force of distributors?

THE RESEARCH

There is no formal research on Calorad that can be found in peer-reviewed journals. Why? Simply because it does not exist. Anecdotal testimonials considered to be “testing” or proof of efficacy are completely unscientific and hold no merit except for those that sell the product. And, separating cause and effect from coincidence is difficult outside of experimentally controlled conditions, so making definitive statements as to its effectiveness is inappropriate
