A Father’s Day Party Any Dad Can Appreciate

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

When Mother’s Day was established in the early 1900s, it only made sense that a Father’s Day would soon follow. There is some debate on when and how it was established, but it is generally believed that Father’s Day was also established in the early 1900s. The date recognized as Father’s Day varied from July and June. It was declared an official holiday by U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1972. From this point forward, Father’s Day is recognized as the third Sunday in June.

People typically spend more energy with a Mother’s Day celebration. If you want to arrange a party to pay homage to a special father, a Father’s Day celebration can do just the trick. It usually doesn’t take a lot of fanfare to put a smile on a father’s face. A party with minimal decorations, but plenty of fun activities usually works best for a Father’s Day party. A good guide for determining the decorations to use is to consider the father’s personality, hobbies, and general style. A father with a sense of humor and basic style will probably appreciate a more festive party than one that is more reserved and serious. Use colors that are subtle, but joyous. You may want to consider the father’s hobbies when decorating for a Father’s Day party. For example, a father who has a hobby of working on cars or building things will probably appreciate a party decorated with mini racecars

Barbeque, hamburgers, and hot dogs are popular foods to serve at a laid back Father’s Day party. This type of party works fine for outdoor celebrations. If the party is more formal, entrees, such as steak, lobster, or lamb chops is a good idea. The type of food you serve can also vary according to the weather.

A Children’s Holiday Easter Party: Hopping Mad Enjoyment

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

The traditional symbols of Easter are rabbits and eggs. However, there is a significant religious association with this occasion. As many celebrations and holidays of our time, Easter has somewhat evolved. The significance of rabbits and eggs stems from what was originally a celebration of the ancient goddess Eastre, who in ancient times was considered the goddess of fertility. In present times, Easter has meant a time for children to embrace both the religious aspects of the occasion. After children have gone to church or acknowledge the religious aspect of Easter, it is usually time for a party.

Easter occurs on a Sunday between the middle of March and April, which is springtime. The good news about having an Easter party is that you don’t have to worry about the children running and playing in your home. You can easily decorate and hold the entire festivities outdoors.

Whether it is in the form of chocolate, pink confection, a stuffed animal, or in its real life form, a rabbit must make an appearance at an Easter party. Children love surprises. Instead of a traditional Easter egg hunt, your party could feature an afternoon with a jumbo rabbit. You don’t have to visit your local pet store. Instead, purchase an adult-size bunny suit and have someone dress up as the Easter bunny. Your Easter bunny could lead several activities with the children. If you must have an Easter egg hunt, instead of the children hunting real colored eggs, have the Easter bunny hid large plastic eggs with gifts inside. You can purchase plastic eggs that are empty and bundle your own creative gifts, or buy those that are already pre-filled with goodies. In either case you are sure to win over many young hearts.

MySpace-Friendster and Squidoo: Which is Right for You?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

These days, some may tell you it isn’t all about the blog anymore. To be seen on the Internet, and to promote your books, CDs, and other products, you have make friends online, and become involved in a network of like-minded people. If no such place exists, you are then charged with creating such a safe house in the hopes of attracting people who might enjoy what you write.

The concept of the online social network is all the Internet rage. Where blogs allow website owners to add content and promote various products and ideas, involvement in a social networks help one target a specific audience and broaden exposure in a relevant environment. As the world continues to theoretically shrink with communal sharing of ideas, videos, music, and images, people can establish different levels of relationships through these networks, be they casual or intimate.

As someone with a book, CD, or product to sell, involvement in social networks can raise awareness of your brand, contribute to link popularity for your main website, and help your overall image become more dynamic and interactive in the mind of a potential customer.

However, one wants to be certain not to spread the talent and effort too thinly. While it is important to set aside some time to promote via the Internet, having too many eggs in the basket may prove cumbersome. Should you join as many social sites as possible. It is recommended from a branding standpoint. Establish your name on each site and provide the fundamental information about your books, goods and services with the necessary Web links, let this be the minimum effort you put into a site. With some site you may find you participate more than with others. Only your comfort level and commitment to time will ascertain where the bulk of your promotional efforts will go.

So, to which social networks should you subscribe? There are quite a few that have gained world popularity in recent months, some are even cited on news programs and other established websites. Some cater to the general public, some to niche communities. Finding out where you and your books belong doesn’t have to be a chore. Here follows a brief survey three social websites, two established and one up-and-comer:

MySpace: MySpace just may be the pet rock of the Internet. Everybody seems to use MySpace for their online headquarters these days: celebrities, music groups, authors, and everyday people. What attracts users to MySpace is its multi-functionality. Users can post daily entries in a weblog, share pertinent info on a main page for new visitors, post quick bulletins to friends with a single keystroke, and join message board communities with people who share similar interests.

Authors and musicians find MySpace especially helpful as a promotional tool for their works. Musicians may upload songs in MP3 format for listeners to sample, while writers can present books covers, excerpts, and links to purchase. The act of obtaining “friends” within MySpace increases the possibility of exposure as MySpace sites become interconnected through user activity. Leaving messages for “friends” on their respective MySpace sites establishes your brand and advertises your own page. The more active you are on MySpace, the more attention you bring to your works. With regards to functionality and popularity, this is definitely one all authors should consider joining.

Friendster: Friendster works along the same principles as MySpace, which is understandable since this site preceded the other by about a year. Friendster allows for users to post blogs and photos and connect with other Friendster users who share similar interests through private messaging and group message boards. Though not as much in the public eye as MySpace, to set up a rudimentary information page on your site, content, and products on Friendster may be beneficial in attracting other members searching for your interests.

Squidoo: With an odd-looking, squid-like mascot, Squidoo is a fast-growing social network that allows users to create “lenses” relating to various topics. An author for example, may choose to create an informational “lens” on the topic of his/her book, and format the content of the page to suit the information. How Squidoo differs from other social network sites is the use of set modules which build each page. There is no set blog software within Squidoo, but users may implement RSS feeds, text content, and affiliate links from any given number of participating retailers to build a page.

An author of a baseball book can, for example, implement the RSS feed of his weblog into Squidoo, link to relevant baseball sites with a link module, and link to his book on Amazon.com. Affiliation links allows for the Squidoo user to earn a percentage of sales attributed to the site as well.

The one advantage to establishing a lens on Squidoo is that, with the RSS feature, one may build two social networks at once. By updating a blog at MySpace or Friendster, the feed applied to Squidoo will update, saving time on updating the lens altogether.

Of course, this list of social networks is far from complete. As the Internet continues to expend, certainly more niche communities will launch in order to attract users. Some may explode like MySpace, while others maintain a steady user base like Friendster. Either way, anybody with a book, CD, or item to sell on the Internet should take advantage of the extra exposure, and determine how much effort should go into each site. Nuture your brand across the Internet, and you are certain to see recognition and sales grow.

A Columbus Day Picnic and Sailing Party

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

There is a huge misconception about the voyage that Christopher Columbus made to North America in 1492 and the meaning behind Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the 12th of October in the U.S., Spain, and Italy. Christopher Columbus and his crew are renowned for reaching the New World. The legend has it that the trip for which Columbus Day is celebrated resulted in the discovery of North America. In actuality, America had already been discovered. What Christopher Columbus did that makes Columbus Day a special time of celebration for the Spanish and those living in America is that his trip was the first interaction between the two worlds. For this reason, Columbus Day is celebrated in both Spain as well as in America.

Since Columbus Day is a holiday in most places, your celebration can last all day. If there is a local Columbus Day parade, this could start the celebrations. A Columbus Day party is a perfect outdoor event, with weather permitting. This party is one that features the best of both the American and Latin American worlds. To keep the spirit of the voyage alive, you may consider serving foods similar to those that were eaten by Christopher Columbus and his crew. The staple foods for the crewman included fish, nuts, raisins, cheese, rice, and molasses. You can create several snack trays in addition to small finger sandwiches and lay them on picnic tables.

In keeping with the spirit of the explorations of Christopher Columbus, a party to celebrate Columbus Day should feature a sailing trip. While the cost will vary according to area, for about $150 you can probably rent a sailboat, complete with a captain, for two hours. If you own a sailboat you’re ready to hit the water and make your own exploratory voyage!

A Superbowl Party of Football Cheer

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

Spectator sports are a favorite past time of people all over the world; football and its granddaddy championship game, the Superbowl, is probably one of the most watched event. The game of football has been in existence since the 1800s, but the Superbowl has only existed since January 15, 1967. The playoffs, which precede the Superbowl, are big games, but even people who don’t watch football during the rest of the season look forward to the big game. The Superbowl has become one of the biggest events for family and friends to get together.

Since the Superbowl features the two best teams in the NFL, it is very likely that the partygoers will share in their desired chosen winner of the game. In this case, purchasing a decorations and accessories package that includes banners, plates, napkins, and party favors is a great idea. Everyone can wear jersey or other gear of the football team. If the guests are rooting for different teams, decorating can be a bit tricky, but still doable. If the area where the game will be watched is large enough, an idea for decorating for both teams is to have separate banners and use plain cups and plates in the colors of the respective teams.

Food is usually a significant part of a Superbowl party. The big game is typically held some time between lunch and dinner hours. Balancing the food offerings with snacks and a filling entrée is recommended. Chips and dip, Buffalo wings, veggie or fruit trays, and finger sandwiches are great snacks for a Superbowl party. For a main entrée, nachos, chili, and similar filling, but light meals are a good idea. Beverages of all kinds are typically served at Superbowl parties. Beer is the staple, but wine coolers, and non-alcoholic beverages should be easily accessible for mixed crowds. Once the party is set up, all that is necessary is for the game to begin!

Avoiding Repossession - An Overview

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

One of the most unpleasant consequences of failing to pay your mortgage is “repossession” of your property. This is a problem that is affecting an increasing number of homeowners throughout the country.

The first notification will be from the lender warning of the consequences should you not keep up your payments on the mortgage. If your mortgage payments are not being kept up to date then the lender may decide to approach the courts to apply for a repossession order.

The threat of repossession is something that a growing number of individuals are facing today. This can be put down to a number of factors that will on the most part, include borrowers who overstretch themselves financially and subsequently struggle to meet their monthly secured commitments.

Runaway property prices have too played a part as this has made homes in many areas unaffordable for first-time buyers. Many stretch their finances to get a first foot on the ladder. Some will see this as an essential means for home ownership.

Debt campaigners have highlighted in recent months that a growing number of borrowers were unable to meet their mortgage repayments, with many of them first-time buyers who only recently climbed onto the property ladder.

The Citizens Advice Bureau said that nearly a million people had missed one or more mortgage repayment in the past year. Over two million said they were concerned that their finances may not stretch to cover their monthly debts.

Missing payments on the mortgage or secured loan is a serious issue which could lead to arrears and possibly repossession if matters are not dealt with.
The repossession process will start by the lender applying to the courts for a repossession order. It is unlikely that the courts will grant this on the first hearing. They will probably grant a suspended repossession order.

This suspended repossession order means that that the individual involved must abide by the courts ruling. This will include having an agreed a payment in place with the lender to reduce the arrears balance over a period of time.

If these payments are not being met, the lender can apply for the repossession court order. In this case the courts are more likely to take the side of the lender & grant the repossession court order.

If the house repossession order is granted, the lender will attempt to sell your property quickly to recover their money. They typically use auctions and estate agents to sell your property, often discounted to attract quick buyers. When the property is sold, the lender’s account is cleared first.

Any surplus will be repaid to the homeowner. However, if there is any shortfall, the lender will attempt to recover it from the individual involved for a period of up to 12 years!

The important points to remember is that without taking action, these problems do not just go away. At the earliest possible stage the lender must be informed of any financial issues that may affect the monthly payments of the mortgage. Do not ignore letters, especially court papers and court hearings.

If this does happen to you, then you must contact the lender immediately and explain your situation to them. It may be possible that you able to come to an arrangement to ease the situation.

If you are having serious problems then another option to consider is remortgaging. If you have enough equity in your property then you might be able to switch lenders and start afresh.

So whatever stage of the repossession process you are, you do have options that you can explore. Just make sure you act quickly and keep your lender informed.

Cinco de Mayo: A Time for a Festive and Entertaining Party

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

Cinco de Mayo is a festive occasion that celebrates a great achievement in Mexican history. It was May 5, 1862 in Mexico City when a Mexican army of about 4,000 defeated an elaborate French army double their size. The defeat is a great achievement because the French army, under the leadership of Emperor Napoleon III, had never lost a battle in more than half a century. The Mexican defeat of the French army is credited for enabling the U.S. armed forces to build up their strategic power and eventually defeat them and end the Civil War. Because of its dual benefit, Cinco de Mayo is an event that many Mexicans, as well as Americans celebrate.

Mexican culture is well known for its colorful and all encompassing method of celebration. A Cinco de Mayo party would be remiss if it did not feature elements of Mexican culture. Vibrant colors of red and greed mixed with white will set the tone of the festivities. Flowers are also a must have for a Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Flowers are perfect at tables and on other pieces of furniture at the Cinco de Mayo party. Mexican music that is high-spirited is another feature of Mexican culture that can set the tone of freedom at a Cinco de Mayo party. What foods are appropriate for a Cinco de Mayo celebration? Mexican food, of course! A great idea for a family celebration is to have each family contribute a Mexican dish. The host can provide tortilla chips and salsa for guests to snack on until the main meal is served. Before dinner, the guests can enjoy dancing, singing, and sharing. A piñata is a great activity for young children.

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of pride and freedom. Lest the young forget its meaning, a moment of reflecting on the reason for celebrating Cinco de Mayo is appropriate at some point during the party.

Depleted Uranium in Tank and Artillery Shells

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

We’ve heard a lot about the dangers of depleted uranium in tank and artillery shells used in recent conflicts. Why is such a dangerous substance used, especially if the dangers remain long after the shell has been fired and could contaminate allied troops who occupy former enemy positions?

D.U. is a very good material since it has a high density and and at the same time very strong and hard but at the same time not brittle. That means excellent penetration capabilities. And in addition to this the D.U. fragments will start to burn after penetration causing secondary damage to the target which will lead to a higher kill probability.

Other countries that have limited access to DU us heavy metal such as wolfram carbide and similar alloys that also have good penetration capabilities.

The difference between them is that Wolfram Carbide is very expensive to create but easy to machine into ammunition. DU is relatively cheap but on the other hand very hard to manufacture. This makes them comparable in price.

But the two materials are equally dangerous after penetration when inhaling dust since wolfram Carbide is toxic when inhaled.

There is currently no other alternative to material for use in anti-tank ammunition and high-capability armor piercing rounds than just Wolfram alloys and DU.

Let’s say the tank crew is locked in their tank — and they know that the enemy foot soldiers are clambering all over the tank. The crew doesn’t want that. I think I was told about modern tanks firing a grenade upwards then it exploding. This had the effect of killing the unwanted enemy scrambling over the tank, but not harming the tank because of its armor. Have you ever heard of such a thing? If not — what do tank crews do if there are 5 enemy personnel scrambling around on the roof and they want rid of them? On modern tanks there are some ways to prevent enemy soldiers to climb “onboard”.

1. Speed makes it hard to get on the tank. Its though to get up when a tank is still moving, imagine when it is driving along in 10 km/h

2. A tank is never alone. Another tank can easily hose the other tank with machinegun fire to get rid of soldiers climbing on top.

3. There are systems like the French Giat Galiz that can fire smoke grenades as well as high explosive grandes that detonate right outside the tube covering the tank in shrapnel.

An enemy that has the chance to climb up on a tank is doing something that can easily be described as suicide. It would be much better to sneak up within close range and fire an rpg or place an explosive device. Which would in any scenario, be classified as suicide attempt.

I have quite a few clients who were in tanks in Vietnam. Several have signs of brain injury, without history of trauma - other than being in tanks during combat. Is there any evidence that the violent shaking of the head or impact of sound waves could have produced brain injury in these veterans?

I cannot confirm or deny, just speculate This was a question that I have never encountered before. I have never heard of such a connection with brain damage & tanks.

High noise can lead to tinnitus (high pitch noise & ringing in the ears) which in turn can lead to problems and unhealthy. Violent shaking and bouncing in tanks with helmets on could cause stretched neck muscles and I guess, in theory, more severe injuries

A Christmas Party Fit for the Office

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

In the U.S., the 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day are all significant days of celebration, but Christmas is probably the one holiday that just about everyone celebrates. It is very common for most businesses to close their doors for business on December 25th, Christmas day. Christmas is traditionally a Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus, but many people have come to celebrate it in their own unique way. Some people recognize it as a day of giving to others and volunteer to help those that are less fortunate. Many others simply share gifts with their family and friends and enjoy the time off from work.

Because people celebrate Christmas in many different ways, an office Christmas party can also have many avenues of celebration. The office Christmas party is different from a more personal party of friends and family in that it must embrace the different ways of celebration. A party, for example, that has religious overtones may offend a co-worker that is not a Christian. In the converse, a party that focuses on Santa Claus may offend a co-worker who is Christian. The best approach to an office Christmas party is to throw in a little of everything. You can easily discover any special needs and concerns by sending out invitations and requesting that people with certain needs and concerns make those known when they R.S.V.P. Most people embrace the gift of giving at Christmas. Choosing names for presents and giving the gifts at the Christmas party is a common activity. In addition, everyone can bring in their own stocking with their name on it and the company can provide small gifts to all the employees, along with candy.

The food you choose to serve is open. A budget-conscious company may consider providing the main entrée and have the employees bring the side dishes and desserts. This potluck is very common. The company policy will determine whether alcohol is appropriate for the company. If you are not sure of the policy, be sure to check with someone to make sure it is fine. This is particularly important to discover this information if the Christmas party will be held in the office. If you are given the go ahead to serve alcohol, be sure you have a taxi service or designated drivers, just in case someone has a bit too much alcohol to drink at the party and is not able to drive themselves home.

A 4th of July Party in Your Community

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

The 4th of July is an American holiday because it commemorates the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The Declaration of Independence was the instrument that established the thirteen colonies that rebelled against the rule of Great Britain as independent. The document is famous for its dual pronouncement of separation and unity. The 4th of July should be a celebration in American history since it is the basis of the United States of America.

Having a 4th of July celebration is not unique, but you can plan a party to make it unique for you. People typically have the 4th of July off from work and are able to spend time with their family and friends. Most cities provide a parade. If you live in a close-knit community, you may want to consider planning a 4th of July parade and party for your community. A parade is loved by both the young and old. You basically need to have music, probably provided by the local high school band, entertainment, and points of 4th of July interest. A reading of significant points in the Declaration of Independence is a good idea to make sure everyone understands the reason for the celebration.

After the parade, everyone can join in the activities. Since this event is designed for a community celebration. Having team activities is a good idea. The 4th of July occurs at a time when the weather is usually warm and sunny. An outdoor picnic or gathering in a hall is perfect for the celebration after the parade. To keep with the theme, the party should include lots of American dishes, such as apple pie, hot dogs, and barbeque.
