Blackjack Terms - Part Four

November 18th, 2007

We’re nearing completion in our Blackjack terms series. In our next to last series installment, we’ll go over some terms, such as “Money management,” “Paint” and “Push.” We start out with an important term, because it highlights how the Blackjack rules can be different from casino to casino.

Las Vegas Strip Rules - Las Vegas is split into two main gambling regions-Downtown and the Strip. The Strip has different Blackjack rules than Downtown. A major rule to check on before you play is whether the dealer must hit or stand on a soft 17.

Money Management - It’s no secret. Losing players rarely have any money management skills. Money management goes beyond just knowing how much money you have to play with. It involves knowing how much to bet and when. There are many money management systems out there.

Money Plays - A command barked out by a dealer when a player puts actual cash in the betting area.

Natural - When you’re dealt a Blackjack.

Paint - Want to see paint? If so, you’re asking for a face card. It’s called this, because face cards are graphical in nature.

Pat Hand - No, it’s not the hand of someone named Pat. When you have a pat hand, you want to stay. An example of a pat hand is a hard 17. A hard hand is one in which there isn’t an Ace counting for 11 points.

Point Count - If you’re counting cards, you always know what the count of a deck is.

Push - This is another name for a tie. When you have a bet that pushes, you don’t win or lose. Your money is returned. If you’re playing a double face up game, it’s possible that there aren’t any pushes, because the dealer wins all ties.

Resplit - When you get two cards of the same rank, like two 7’s, you can split them. If your first card on a split is also the same rank, you can resplit then hand. Some casinos only allow one split and others may allow up to four. Check with the casino to be certain. While you always want to split Aces, some casinos don’t allow you to play split Aces like a regular hand. Instead, they’ll just give you one card per hand.

Running Count - It’s the same thing as a Point Count. At any given hand, a card counter knows the count of the deck and bets accordingly. If the count is favorable to the casino, the bet is reduced. If the count is favorable to players, the bet is increased.

That does it for this installment of Blackjack terms. We’ve got one installment in our series left. We’ll go over terms, such as Shill, Shoe, Third Base, Toke, Vig and Whale.

Overcoming Addiction - It’s As Difficult As You Think It Is

November 6th, 2007

As a person who smoked a pack of cigarettes and choked down an average of twelve beers a day for more than 15 years, I think I may know a little something about addiction. Not only addiction, but overcoming addiction, because I walked away from both practices without the aid of gum, patches, meetings, or counselors. I’m not implying that there’s something wrong with getting help, I’m simply saying that for me the traditional kinds of help weren’t necessary. Whatever works to help individuals overcome addiction is a good thing, no matter what form it takes. My hope is that what I learned may help someone else in their process of overcoming addiction.

What I realized is that overcoming addiction is going to be exactly as difficult as you think it will be. In other words, if you think it’s going to be terribly difficult, it will be. If you think it will be easy, it will be. It’s as simple as that. I found that the difficulty I had in overcoming addiction was in direct proportion to how difficult I thought it was going to be. So I simply began changing my thoughts. I heard a quote that explains what I’m referring to perfectly, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” This is what I began doing, and everything changed.

This may sound over-simplistic and a bit nutty, but it’s true. For about a year prior to walking away, I thought about it a lot. I thought about how much I disliked being hung over and out of shape. I thought about how much I disliked the smell of my clothes from smoking. I thought about how someone smelled right after smoking (which indecently is disgusting!) I thought about how much I truly disliked being a smoker and a drinker. And at the same time I also thought about how easy it was going to be to walk away.

Soon, both practices became a complete pain in the butt to me. I truly didn’t enjoy either one any longer. I couldn’t lie to myself anymore and say that I “enjoyed” either practice. The truth is that neither practice is fun, you just convince yourself that it is. All of these realizations came about because of one simple thing. I had changed the way I looked at both drinking and smoking, and the act of doing both things was about to change.

One day I looked into my pack of cigarettes to have a smoke, and there was only one left. Rather than planning to get another pack, I said to myself, “This is it, I’m done”. I smoked that cigarette and haven’t smoked since. During the next few weeks I drank once or twice, but always wanted to smoke, so I stopped drinking as well. That was over a year ago, and I’m now clean and sober. And it was exactly as difficult as I thought it would be.

Tips On Organising Your Camping Trip

November 6th, 2007

Camping ought to be a fun, relaxing, and a spontaneous adventure. But in order to achieve and benefit from that spontaneity, advanced planning is necessary.

For over a century now camping has been a tradition, however, back then camping wasn’t so much camping, but surviving in the wild for a period. It grew in earnest, as a well know form a vacation, during the 1940’s.

Now, with the advance of technology, and the use of recreational vehicles (RV) camping became extremely admired. Modern tents, sleeping bags, and gadgets such as cell phones and GPS systems are poles apart from 25 years ago. This has resulted in campers vying for a spot during a particular week of the year from a limited number of campgrounds.

Commercial campsites leapt up in order to satisfy the demand, but these did have economic constraints (not all campgrounds will make profitable businesses). The amount of sought after spots in State and National parks is limited also. There’s only so much magnificent scenery about.

The first item on your agenda for planning your camping excursion is to make a decision on location, then book a reservation. There are thousands of online sites to assist you. Two notable sites to visit include Recreation.Gov (http://www.recreation.gov/) and National Park Service (http://www.nps.gov/)

In order to reserve the best possible spots it can be necessary to make your booking at least two months ahead, something times as much as twelve mouths for the most popular destinations.

With the reservation confirmed it’s now time to arrange your packing list. You could simply hurl everything into SUV and be on your way. But the chances are high that you’ve leave something important behind.

Ideally take along a well stocked first aid kit. Take a moment to research the most common poisonous plants for the area you intend to visit, and any wildlife warning for that region. Also, a variety of bugs are widespread around most campsites.

Make an entire list: camping tents, clothing, backpacks, tools, lighting, cooking utilities, sleeping bags, which will all be necessary for the destination and time of year. That list ought to be at least a page long just to cover the essentials.

Look into the route you intend to take, particularly if you plan on taking a winter break. Road closures, rock slides, floods, ice, snow avalanches, are all still fairly common problems.

As the date for the vacation becomes close, take a look at the weather. Many camping sites are location away from urban areas or in the mountains. These spots are far less predicable when in comes to weather with abrupt thunderstorms, rain squalls, etc.

With careful planning of your camping trip you’ll be in a better position to relax and forget about any hassles during the vacation.

The Connection Between Acid Reflux And Sinus Problems

November 6th, 2007

On the surface, heartburn and a stuffy nose might not seem related but there is recent evidence that suggests there may be a connection between acid reflux and sinus problems.

If you acid reflux sometimes called GERD is a result of your stomach acids backing up into the esophagus. This happens because a little valve in between the esophagus and stomach isn’t functioning properly and is allowing the acids and food to back up. Your stomach acids are very strong but the stomach is made in such a way that he can easily handle the acids the esophagus, however, is not made to handle your stomach acids and when this backup occurs your body sends out alarm signals in order to minimize the damage.

These alarm signals cause the body to do certain things in order to protect itself and one of the things is to produce extra mucus. The mucus will take away the caustic nature of the asset and neutralize the damage as well as stop the acid from spreading further up the esophagus. The funny thing is that sometimes when this is happening it actually stops the heartburn symptoms so you might not even know you’re having acid reflux!

It is this mucus production that causes the possible connection between acid reflux and sinus problems as mucus production is stepped up in the sinuses as well. The sinuses themselves act like a big filter for the air that you breathe in and usually have a thin layer of mucus which is used to moisten the air as well as trap pollutants. The problem comes when there is too much mucus produced the sinuses get clogged up and can’t drain properly causing sinusitis.

So if you often experience sinus problems together with GERD or acid reflux consider the possibility that the two might be related. It’s important any way to treat your acid reflux probably and see a doctor so that you can be diagnosed and put on a treatment plan. You probably also have to make some dietary changes including avoiding spicy foods, fried foods, fatty foods and perhaps even caffeine in combination beverages.

You can also help you sinuses out by making sure you take good care of them. One way that you can help clean them out its with a little device called a Neti pot. This looks almost like a little tiny watering can and you fill it up with a warm water mixture and pour it into your nose all the way up into your sinuses. This flushes out your whole nasal cavity and sinuses and could help relieve excess mucus.

While evidence shows it could be a connection between acid reflux and sinus problems, it’s no guarantee that if you experience on both that they are connected. So it’s in your best interest to make your best effort to treat each one properly. Then you can restore your body to better state of health which will allow you to enjoy each day more.

Obesity Can Raise Your Risk Of High Blood Pressure By As Much As 85 Percent

November 6th, 2007

It has been well known for a long time that excess weight can lead to high blood pressure, and that losing weight can lower your blood pressure, but until now it has been difficult to quantify the degree of risk.

However, for more than twenty years now (since 1986) researchers have been monitoring the health a group of more than 22,000 doctors and, in one aspect of their research, have examined the relationship between weight and blood pressure in a sub-group of 13,563 male doctors whose blood pressure was normal at the start of the study.

Each year throughout the study period a wide variety of lifestyle data was collected and health measurements taken, including each participant’s body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure, and these measurements have now been analyzed to produce a twenty year picture.

The BMI for men of a normal weight is 18.5 to 24.9 and the study used men with a BMI of 22.4 (the mean for normal weight men within this group) as their base for calculations. They then looked at the data collected to predict the likelihood of these men developing high blood pressure over the twenty years of the study.

Surprisingly, there was a marked increase even in those men who were only slightly above the mean figure of 22.4, but still within the normal weight range, with men between 22.4 and 23.6 being 20 percent more likely to develop high blood pressure. This risk then continued to rise as weight increased and it was found that obese men were 85 percent more likely than the lower end normal weight men to develop high blood pressure.

Most importantly, this figure of 85 percent was calculated on the basic not simply of BMI and blood pressure data, but also took into account such things as age, other health conditions (such as diabetes) and a wide range of lifestyle factors including smoking and exercise.

People suffering from obesity are well used to being told that this, that or the other is bad for them and carries risks but, more often than not, they tend to dismiss these on the grounds that the risk is probably not that high and that their chances of being affected are relatively low. In the case of high blood pressure though it would seem that the risk is high and the chances of being affected are far from low.

A Small Prayer

November 6th, 2007

FEEL LIKE IT!! IT WILL ONLY TAKE A MINUTE.

You never know when God is going to bless you!! Good things
happen when you least expect them to !!!!!!!!

Dear Lord, I thank You for this day.

I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I’m blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you..
I ask now for Your forgiveness. Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind
that I can accept all things. Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over.

And It’s the best response when I’m pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can’t pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak… Keep me lifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those that are lost and can’t find their way. I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for
those who don’t know You intimately. I pray for those that don’t believe.

But I thank you that I believe. I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers. For each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight.
I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees it.

Just repeat this phrase and see how God moves!!
God I love you and I need you, come into my heart, please.

Family Member Guide to Nursing Homes

November 6th, 2007

Clients frequently tell us they trusted the nursing home or assisted living facility to take care of their loved one. We also hear clients say they assumed their regular visits to the nursing home or assisted living facility would encourage staff to provide better care for their family member. Well, that may be true but your presence in the room or down the hall is not enough.

Frustrated family members concerned about the level of care their loved one is receiving call often. Most of the time, their complaints cannot and should not be addressed by filing a lawsuit ? so we provide more general advice. That advice is as follows:

Be Organized:

Keep a diary or a log of every visit to the nursing home or assisted living facility and include the following information:

  • Date / time of visit.
  • Location - where your loved one was upon arrival.
  • Complaints - stained clothes, sheets, food problems, no water? Write the complaints down.
  • Notify staff - make a written and verbal complaint to the charge nurse. Write down her name, and what she said would be done about the problem.
  • Follow up ? next time you are there and ask the nurse what has been done. Ask to see the chart where the corrected action should have been documented.

Document Your Complaints:

If the problem continues take photographs; send a letter to the nursing home administrator requesting a conference. Ask that staff receive further training. Ask to see the facility?s policies and procedures (you have this right under the Virginia Administrative Code) and compare what the staff is doing with what is required by the facility?s policies and procedures.

Complain to State/Local Authorities:

If the problems get worse, or a single accident causes harm, call your local Department of Social Services (each County has one) and ask to speak to Adult Protective Services. File a complaint. You may call the Virginia Department of Health (1-800-955-1919) and file a complaint with them as well.

How to Work with Attending Physicians:

Many attending physicians also serve as Medical Directors to the facility. They are only obligated to review a resident?s chart and or examine them, pursuant to Medicare requirements, and when a change in condition occurs. Ask to speak to the attending physician after each visit to determine whether there has been a change in condition. If it is a routine visit, contact the physician to find out what was examined. If medications are changed, ask why? Be curious, and write down the answers you receive. We have discovered in our cases where some nurses actually will draft the physician?s orders and then call the physician after the fact, just to get their ?ok?.

What to do if a Fall Occurs:

If a fall occurs immediately go the facility. Ask for the name of individual who found your loved one. Where was the fall? What was he wearing? Was there medical equipment involved? Write all of this down. Who examined your family member to assess their status after the fall? Who determined that no injury occurred? Did a roommate witness the fall?

Follow up with the charge nurse ? ask what is being done to prevent another fall. Ask to attend the Fall Committee?s next conference when your family member is being discussed.

Also, consider the context of the fall ? what time of day? Where were they going? Had they asked for help? Do they have the ability to ask for help? Is your family member taking any new medications which may cause dizziness?

What if Your Resident Stops Eating:

We hear staff say all the time ? ?we tried to get her to eat, but she refused.? Is that true? What is the facility policy? I am certain the policy doesn?t say, ?if resident refuses to eat discontinue attempts.? It likely requires staff to provide an alternative or supplement until the resident gets needed calories. Malnutrition can lead to the development of decubitus ulcers and prevents existing decubitus ulcers from healing.

Review the chart. Can your loved one see to eat? Can he or she feed themself? What about the food ? will he eat what you bring? If so ? tell the nurse and ask them to chart it. Patient refusal is a big excuse given by facilities when problems occur.

Discuss supplements, intravenous nutrition, energy bars ? there are ways to get needed calories in. Is the physician aware? Make him aware.

Conclusion:

There are too many possible problems in a nursing home setting to anticipate or touch on here. However, it is important to be a diligent family member who takes notes and knows about the care provided, including who is providing the care. Also, VISIT, VISIT OFTEN ? bring other family, ministers, anyone who will go. A supportive family can mean the difference between good care and poor care.

Gardening for Wildlife - Biological Warfare for at Home and in the Gardens

November 6th, 2007

It’s that time of year for the biting flies, skeeters and other insects.

I discovered last year that a mixture of rubbing alcohol and pure mint oil keeps these pests at bay. I mixed 2 ounces of pure mint (from a health food store) with 14 ounces of rubbing alcohol. I was using this to spray for wasps, but discovered when I rubbed it on me, that all other biting insects stayed away too. It works well for me.

I smell good and no harsh chemicals found in other sprays. The alcohol evaporates to nothing and the mint stays. Increase the formula to 25% mint and this kills off wasps in the bird house, there nest and drops them like a rock. My research shows that mint is a toxin for bees and wasps.

Because birds have a poor sense of smell and mint is a food item there is no harm. The alcohol evaporates and leaves no trace for man nor beast. Cider vinegar works for this as well. Use mints when you are on a picnic to keep the wasps and yellow jackets away.

A drop or two of pure mint helps keep the bees away from hummer feeders and again, it wont harm the hummers. Pure mint is powerful stuff, so be careful with it. Mint is but one of “Nature’s” own remedies.

Most of you have seen aphids on your plants at one time or another. These small soft bodied, green to yellow to black, insects usually come in colonies of 10 or more and appear on new leaf and bud growth.

One thing you can be certain of is that there is a kind of aphid capable of feeding on every plant you have. Aphids have the advantage of bearing live young, which is rare in the insect world. This helps them to reproduce very quickly.

Some aphids become pregnant without help and can remain pregnant during hibernation. This allows them to flourish and populations can build up almost like magic. Fortunately there are natural enemies for aphids. Parasitic wasps that lay eggs inside of aphids.

Lady bugs, lacewings, damsel bugs and a host of others feed on aphids. These predators are so effective, that under normal conditions we may not see aphids at all. When we see aphid problems on plants, it is usually because an insecticide was applied for some other pest. This causes a secondary outbreak in aphids weeks or months later. Long-term management for aphids is simple.

Avoid using broad spectrum insecticides like pyrethroids, carbomates or organicphosphate insecticides. This allows natural enemies to return and keep the insects under control. Restoring the natural order of things can take a year or longer, but is well worth it for our gardens and environments. General insecticides can’t determine what is good or bad. They kill off pollinators, butterflies and their larvae and other beneficial insects.

Pesticides get on and in our birds. This can make your birds sick or kill them. Without insects, some birds will go else where to feed. Plants and insects have lived together since the beginning and will continue to do so if we don’t mess things up.

Does it really matter if you have a hole in your plant leafs? Some controls for aphids can be pinching the leafs together, A shot with the hose can wash them off. Safe insect soaps are on the market or make your own.

“Nature” had things in control, lets make sure it continues. Yes, I know. In some cases insecticides are needed. Invasions of locust or another pests require help. With non native invasive insects like Japanese beetles and Emerald Ash Borer, we need help to combat them. But, these are cases where there isn’t a natural enemy and they are taking over.

Chose wisely.

There is a time and there is foolishness. There are bug free yards, but these yards lack other wildlife.
Me,…………..

I want my birds, butterflies, dragonflies and toads. I want a wildlife garden, not a show piece. The wildlife is my show piece.

I enjoy the robins, cardinals, wrens and other insect eating birds.

I like to watch the butterflies. When I come across a toad, I know I’m doing something right.

I think we need them as much if not more than they need us in most cases. Native plants can endure hardships better than non natives.

Where’s my orange crate?

Online Data Backup Saves Your Legal Practice

November 6th, 2007

Responsible document archiving is a task many people would prefer to forget about. It’s dull, time consuming, technical, often confusing and, to be honest, about as much fun as debating with a client who thinks he knows more about the law than you do.

But your information is your practice?s most valuable asset. In fact, your data?including your appointment calendar, accounting records, contact database, client files, email and more?is your practice. If you lose your critical data tomorrow, it is unlikely that your practice would survive. Rubbish? Not according to the Globe and Mail, which says that ?70 per cent of small businesses go belly up within a year of suffering a major loss of data? (Joanna Pachner, Globe and Mail, May 16, 2007).

So, what are you doing to protect your information?

If you are currently backing up your data to CD, tape or external hard drive, you?re on the right track. But when was the last time you tested that backup? Backup media are widely known to become ?unreadable? over time, corrupting your data just as VCR tapes chew up your home movies. Moreover, these methods require that you (or your staff) perform the backup and store these unencrypted duplicates in a safe place away from your office. These manual systems tend to break down over time, leaving your precious data?and your livelihood?in a precarious position. Thanks to new technology, however, there is a better way.

You need to protect your practice?s information by using a reputable online data backup and recovery service that specializes in providing secure digital document management to small and medium-sized businesses. These online services completely automate the backup process, encrypt your data, and store it safely offsite. Plus, they are affordable! Not sure where to begin? Here are a few suggestions for what to look for when comparing online data backup and recovery services.

Personalized Onsite Service

Online service providers need not be impersonal or absent. Be sure to partner with a company that includes both onsite and telephone support 24/7/365 as part of your package. Ideally, a Storage Specialist should complete a full data survey at your location at the time of installation. Such personal attention will ensure that all of your critical data is stored safely at the time of installation and going forward as you create new files.

Encryption Level

Nothing less than 448-bit encryption will do. To understand why, consider that online banking uses 128-bit encryption. For each additional bit, the security and protection level doubles. So 129-bit is twice as secure as 128-bit encryption, 130-bit is twice as secure as 129-bit encryption, and so on. This means that 448-bit encryption is many millions of times more secure than banking online.

Built-in Redundancy and Secure Storage

Once your encrypted data arrives at the primary storage site, additional copies of it should be made immediately and stored in at least one other secure location. You?ll also want to make sure that your data is always housed on these offsite servers in its encrypted state.

Historical Versions

The ability to store multiple ?snapshots? of your data is another exciting benefit of online storage applications. Much like a time machine, you can turn back the clock to retrieve your files as they appeared in the past. This feature is particularly useful if you need to retrieve files that were deleted weeks (or even months) ago! Make sure, however, that your chosen partner does not charge for this additional storage.

Regular Communication from Your Service Provider

You should receive a daily email from your chosen partner confirming that your backup was completed in full and on schedule. Alternatively, you may be able to opt for receiving communication only if your backup was not successful?as may be the case during a power outage. If your files have not been stored, for any reason, the next time you turn on your computer you should have a message from your provider giving you the option to perform a backup immediately.

Multiple Users and Computers

Flexibility in terms of your account set-up is an advantage offered by the best service providers. Ideally, you should be able to add multiple users and computers under the same account at no extra charge. Just be sure to verify that only you, not your individual users, have the ability to recover your data, as protecting your intellectual property from malicious or soon-to-be-leaving employees is imperative.

In conclusion, please remember this crucial point: Your data is your most valuable asset. Protecting that asset must be a priority, because the survival of your practice depends on it.
